  1. The Yankees start the 2024 season with a 5-4 win at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The highlights: Making his Yankees debut, Juan Soto went 1-3 with 2 BB and 1 RBI, but his biggest moment, ironically, happened while he was playing RF, as he helped preserve the Yankees’ lead in the 9th inning by throwing out Mauricio Dubón at home. Oswaldo Cabrera went 2-4, scoring 2 runs and hitting his first home run of the year, which proved to be the game-winning hit. Anthony Volpe went 1-2 with 3 BB and 1 RBI. Anthony Rizzo and Alex Verdugo each went 1-3 with 1 RBI, with Rizzo also reaching base via a walk and an HBP.
  2. At last, this afternoon’s lineup. 2B - Torres RF - Soto CF - Judge DH - Stanton 1B - Rizzo SS - Volpe LF - Verdugo C - Treviño 3B - Cabrera
  3. This post more or less mirrors my feelings. If the Devils are not going to make the playoffs, they should at least use the remaining time to evaluate young players to figure out if they fit into the team’s plans for next season. Smith isn’t going to be here, but Hatakka might be, so why not pair him with Nemec and send Smith home? The Devils can survive 2 1/2 weeks without his locker room presence.
  4. If you look at the postgame performance breakdown that @Nicomo shares, Nemec’s recent struggles started the moment he was paired with Smith. [sarcasm]It’s as if requiring a 20-year-old rookie to do the work of two people is asking too much.[/sarcasm]
  5. I’ve never been a Dubinsky fan, but his assessment of Torts is fair.
  6. For roughly a decade, the Devils didn’t have to worry about their own zone, period. It would be nice to get back to that.
  7. Remember when Sean McDonough and Ray Ferraro called him the backbone of the Devils?
  8. The Devils making the playoffs would be the ultimate test of whether Fitz has learned anything from this season. If he fires the coaching staff (minus Sarge, of course) and brings in Berube and Soros, we’ll know that he has. If he retains Green and makes only fringe changes to the coaching staff and roster, we’ll know that he hasn’t.
  9. Per MLB.com, both Brewers-Mets and Braves-Phillies have been postponed.
  10. Agreed. The players can’t depend on Green to devise a winning strategy for each game, so they’re going to have outplay, outwork their remaining opponents. As an aside, I like that each line pair has a unique style, as Nico and Timo have beards, while Jack and Jesper are clean shaven.
