ZeroGravityFat
Clearly LL went in to this knowing there is a plan b since the nhl told him it would be rejected before he submitted it. Now he has to wait a few days before a new contract so he doesn't look so sinister and all knowing (it would make him look like he knew it would get rejected so he had a back up ready, which he won't show). 17th it is. CarpathianForest
If the Devils did contact the NHL in regards to a new contract I'm sure the NHL replied with some vague description of an acceptable contract. It's like that Supreme Court judge said in regards to pornography: The NHL can't define an unacceptable contract but they know one when they see it. Triumph
to me, there are at least 5 or possibly 6 years on the back of the kovalchuk contract that he never intended to play, so that makes structuring a new contract very difficult. if kovalchuk signs a 14 year, 98 million dollar deal (which is the highest he can hope for, i think), he'll still have to structure it such that the final two years have at least 3 million between them, and i would hope 5 million. if he doesn't intend to play those final two years, he's out between 3 million and 5 million on the entire deal. and that's in the best case - i have to imagine that lou wants it closer to 14 years, 90 million, in which case kovalchuk would lose out on between 11 and 13 million dollars. Playing King Solomon, let's call it 14/94 and get this over with. Tri, how much more difficult will it be for the Devils to fill out their roster and get under the cap with a 6.7 million cap hit? maxpower
dchesnokov: Shareholders of Gazprom, the main sponsor of KHL's SKA, will conduct an investigation into the company spending on high profile players. and they will later be executed. Gazprom could spend a bajillion dollars on hockey players as long as Putin has no problem with this.

Tri, how much more difficult will it be for the Devils to fill out their roster and get under the cap with a 6.7 million cap hit? it's so hard to say. the devils would be 3.01 million over the cap with 12 forwards, 7 D, and 2 goalies. so they'd have to cut two of salvador, rolston, zubrus, and i'll throw white into this. that would leave them with 17 roster players, so they'd have to have at least 4 and probably 5 players fill in. it'd be a real tight squeeze with 5, as assuming it would be salvador and zubrus who get the ax, that's only 3.3 million for 5 players. they would probably have to go with only one extra player for the first part of the season, hopefully clearing enough space for another one later on. Maddog
Per Єklund (2.3% accurate) Kovalchuk and NJ apparently are very close to another deal, and may just be waiting to see where the NHL sets the Devils cap space as punishment for the whole circumvention. I was told Kovalchuk and the Devils are 99% there.... more to come... So this means that Lou hasn't even spoken to Kovy or Grossman.

I hope you're right, but something tells me Kovalchuk won't be OK with parting ways with 10M+. It's true that he doesn't have much of a choice if he wants to stay in the NHL, but still, that's a hard pill for anyone to swallow.

As much as I hate this scumbag, plus the fact that he really doesn't know many of the finer nuances of hockey rules and regulations, I have to give it to him that he IS correct sometimes, way before anyone else. A few weeks ago he reported Gagne to Tampa being done WAY before anyone else did. Yesterday, he reported that sources are telling him that the NYI are calling agents and telling them to bring whatever unsigned players they have to their training camp, which was only reported by NYI beat writers today. He's a sensationalist prick, and 99% of what comes out of his mouth is bullsh!t, but I am more inclined to at least consider what he says then I was before. Amberite
we have 19 players and we would lose 2 of them, leaving us at 17. With Kovalchuk, we're at 12 + 7 + 2 = 21. Assuming two players get nixed, as per your post, that would leave us at 11 + 6 + 2 = 19. At the very most, we would need to get 4 players to reach a 23 man roster, and most likely could easily be fine with 22. Am I missing something? Legion15
Imo if the devils and kovy agree to a 15-100 or whatever contract immediately following the rejection of the initial contract...it looks fishy. Almost as if the devils were like, "Hey, this'll probably get rejected, but what the hell let's try anyway". Seems like a more fine-able attitude. And as Tri said...they have to really nail this next contract. Second rejection = fines. Yeah but why don't they come up with something "legal" that Lou, grossman, kovy, etc all agree on but not sign until they submit it to the league and get a guarantee it won't be rejected....THEN officially sign it. Then it would cut down on all this wait time.

Then it would cut down on all this wait time. it doesn't work that way. they're not going to review the deal for you beforehand. if you make some kind of small error, they may kick it back to you and tell you what to do (like in the Erat denial)... but in this case, you're not going to get to float 10 "goofy" contracts to them to see which work. I'm wondering if the league would even agree to assist the devils (not a conspiracy thing here). I'm under the impression that the league's sole role is to approve or reject. Not help design the contract. That being said...you'd think the league would give more clear guidelines... I think the next contract is gonna be 15 years and there is still going to be a free movement year: 2010-11: $6 Million 2011-12: $6 Million 2012-13: $11 Million 2013-14: $11 Million 2014-15: $11 Million 2015-16: $11 Million 2016-17: $11 Million 2017-18: $10 Million (no-movement clause ends on June 30, 2018) 2018-19: $8.5 Million 2019-20: $6.5 Million (no-trade clause begins on July 1, 2019) 2020-21: $3.5 Million 2021-22: $1.5 Million 2022-23: $1.5 Million 2023-24: $1 Million 2024-25: $1 Million Total 15 seasons: $100.5 million $6.7 Million cap hit. However, I think he has absolutely zero sources about anything Kovalchuk related. The guy basically broke Kovalchuk to LA right when everyone else was reporting as a fact that Kovalchuk was coming to NJ. ben00rs: the NHL says to that contract, see you at arbitration. and they'd probably win.
