Hasan's Brodeur Post

I figured this one deserved it's own thread. Marty Brodeur is forever a New Jersey Devil. That's how he'll be remembered. As one of the all-time greats. I loved the video Hasan chose.

Brodeur Retires From Playing

As for my memories of Brodeur, I'll list a few.

-'94 Conference Final Game 7 heroic in defeat

-'97 scores goal vs Habs

-'00 and 03 Stanley Cups the 2000 one vs Belfour was great and 03 Conf. Final vs Sens Game 7 in particular

-'02 Canada Olympic Gold Marty vs Richter one final time

-Marty vs Hank regular season at MSG double shutout that was one of the best 0-0 games ever Devils won the shootout

-552 wins vs Hawks

-'12 ECF outplays Lundqvist at 40

What are your favorite Brodeur memories?

For me, one of my favorite Brodeur moments was Game 7 in 1994...against Buffalo. Here's why:

As many Devils fans who were watching hockey back then know, 1988 was the beginning of an era that simply never came to pass: the Sean Burke era. After his terrific run during both the end of the regular season and the playoffs, he was being heralded as the prototype for future NHL goalies. Well, we know how that turned out.

Chris Terreri eventually wrestled the job away from Burke (despite the franchise clearly giving Burke every chance to be their guy at Terreri's expense)...though he was extremely likable and popular, it was becoming clear very quickly that Terreri was a poor man's #1 at best. If the Devils were going to break their one-and-done cycle (prior to the '93-'94 playoffs, the Devils had been knocked out in the first round of the playoffs for four straight seasons), they were going to need a goalie capable of taking them to that elusive next level.

It was fitting that Brodeur was going up against another top goalie on the rise in one Dominik Hasek in that Game 7. I was there for that game, and prior to the opening faceoff, there was very much a "Dammit, here we go again, another one-and-done" feeling throughout the building. That game was immensely important, because there were a lot of players on the Devils roster who had grown accustomed to losing in the playoffs. And Marty was simply superb...made a number of huge saves and was a huge factor in the Devils proving to themselves that yes, they can actually win a friggin' playoff series. He just never blinked...I will never forget Alexander Moginly repeatedly slamming his stick down on the ice at the end of the game.

And slightly off-topic, after Brodeur looked shaky in Games 1 and 2 in the following series against Boston, Terreri backstopped the Devils to road victories at the Garden in Games 3 and 4...perhaps his finest Devils moments. Some young goalies would've been toast after being benched, but Brodeur bounced back wonderfully and almost led his team to the Stanley Cup Finals. He showed it all in those playoffs: his ability to come through in the clutch, his ability to shake off a poor performance (we saw that against the Ducks in 2003), being able to be that rock-solid foundation in net...and as terrific as he was in the regular season during his rookie year, it was that Game 7 that was the true beginning of The Legend.

I can't stand Derek21. His likability and classy posts have long impeded my ability to hate ALL Rangers fans. :) Can't you just come on here once and be like "Marty blows, Devils have no fans!"?

In all seriousness though, good post, I think you nailed most of Brodeur's most iconic moments. To me the game that sticks out the most is game 5 of the 1999-'00 Finals, in which the Devils lost in 3OT to the Stars. Everyone in CCA was on the edge of their seat into the wee hours of the morning. It got to the point where, despite the gravity of the game, it didn't even matter who won, everyone realized that between Marty and Belfour, they were watching one of the greatest displays of goaltending the game had ever seen.

I think every team has douche bag fansI (both devils and ranger fans)  Derek has never come here and posted offensive stuff toward fans on this forum. Only different opinion. We all know how intense our rivalry is with Rag$, but I think he appreciates/recognizes  good hockey from both teams. I hope he continues to post here. Not everyone likes Marty. i think he's (Marty) the best that's ever played! (not necessarily though red/black glasses)

As a 10 year old kid I didn't quite appreciate the display of talent and was quite disappointed that the team missed their chance to win the Cup while I was in attendance, lol.

Well in all fairness, his #1 Brodeur moment was the Rangers winning the Conference finals in '94. We can just not like him for that.

:)

Mine was a save he made where he got pulled out of position, he had to reach back with the stick and pull the puck out, facing the wrong way. I don't remember when it was, the opponent or the result of the game, but I remember watching it and being absolutely dumbfounded as to how he stopped that puck.

Steiner Sports sold an overhead picture of that save for a while, I didn't have $400 for an autographed photo so I never got it, and I could never find that picture unsigned. I should start searching again, it was an awesome memory that belongs on my "Shelf of Glory" at work, where I keep my other collectibles.

EDIT: found the picture, not for sale but here it is for reference:

I've come to realize watching  Schneider is that I miss the stick handling and the tape to tape outlet passes.  I watched Marty do it for 20 years and now that it's gone realize how special it was.  How long until the trapezoid is gone?

My other great memories among others that don't come quickly to mind.:  The scorpion save, The various helicopter saves, and of course the dying art of the two pad stack.

I was at the playoff game against Montreal when he scored a goal, and I was at the game in Montreal when Brodeur tied Roy for career wins. Great personal memories.

Another one that sticks out for me is when Marty tried to calm the crowd when we were booing the selection of Giguere as the Conn Smythe Trophy winner. He pretended to put the Cup over his head, indicating that the best trophy was yet to come, and it was ours.

I was at the playoff goal game as well. Was really young then, but I'll never forget that.

Saw him hit 552 and actually had a VIP pass to go down below to the Platinum lounge I think it was called. All the player's families were there. Met a few of the guys and discussed with Parise and Langs the hook/dive call on Langs by I think it was Big Buff.

Another great game I saw from him was his 99th career shutout against Colorado that he got right after coming back from injury in 09 I think it was.  So many great memories.

I agree 100%, the stickhandling which we took for granted for so long is the thing I think about every game now...

A very underrated performance of Brodeur's that usually goes unmentioned (for obvious reasons) was a shutout of Carolina in the 2009 playoffs, the game after we lost with 0.2 seconds left. I will never forget being there, it was an absolute gladiator match between Cam Ward and Martin Brodeur, the saves were in the mid 40s for both, I think, both teams were just going shot for shot on these guys; I think Brodeur got banged up earlier in the game, got run into, but came back and played one of the greatest games I can remember seeing live. I also gained a lot of respect for Cam Ward that day.

This.

Just saw this thread and was going to write about this game............

I actually have this game on DVD, and while I haven't watched it in a little while, Marty made some absolutely incredible saves in this game.

A very important series to win. It taught them how to win these tight series going forward.

Here's 3 of mine, with the bonus being I was actually at all of these games:

0-0 Tie vs. Hasek (the Half-puck game)

Goal vs. Montreal in the 97 Playoffs

Game 7 vs. Ducks in '03 (shutouts in 3 games of the Stanley Cup finals, including game 7, and you don't win the f'ing Conn Smythe????   BOOOOOOO)
