  1. You would after you watched Semin play for a month. There's a reason the Caps are more than happy to let him walk.

    Koval CHOKE!

I'm holding out hope that he is more like Tino Martinez. Tino replaced Mattingly and had a terrible 1st month. He was booed pretty hard at Yankee Stadium. Then he broke out of it and became a fan favorite. I think that's the best we can hope for right now.
  3. You know what scares me? Without Brodeur, this game could be 10-2.
  4. Way back when, the rumor was that Kovy wanted a $100MM deal. If that is still the case, he may not accept less money up front. And Lou may not want to cut years off the back end without cutting $$ off the front end. Of course, the other possibility is that they had Plan B and now they are quietly running it by the NHL to avoid a second rejection. Or maybe the NHL rejected Plan B and they have to figure out Plan C. Plus, the arbitrator's lousy opinion basically said that the Hossa deal wasn't a precedent becuase it supposedly was under "investigation." We all know the "investigation" is a crock, but I wouldn't be surprised if the NHL is hanging their hat on that language and telling Lou that even a Hossa-type deal may not be acceptable. I'm not optimistic that this will be resolved any time soon.
  5. This actually is much different. The parties will be arguing over the meaning of the terms of a contract. Assuming that the terms are ambiguous, the parties can introduce industry custom to prove their meaning. The Hossa, Pronger, Luongo contracts would be proof of an interpretation favorable to the Devils. In addition, where a contract is involved, a party can not enforce its terms arbitrarily (it's called the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing). Maybe this goes to arbitration, but I think it's more likely that Lou/Vanderbeek go to Bettman and ask him where the line is. It gets sticky if the Devils can't live with the cap hit associated with a contract that the NHL will approve.
  6. Somebody should tell the folks at NHL.com. The front page of that website looks like it was written by the Devils PR department.
  7. In previous years, Center Ice has carried games in the first two rounds of the playoffs. I expect they will carry the playoff games again this year.
  8. I just found it. It's at the end of the interview: "By the way, did you hear that Kovalchuk is going to the New Jersey Devils?" Didn't sound like speculation to me.
  9. I think the show has a facebook page -- XM Hockey This Morning. They may have put the audio up there.
  10. I heard it too. Potvin said, out of the blue, "Did you hear about Kovalchuk to the Devils?" or something like that. It didn't sound like a rumor, but a done deal. Even the host said "What?" Then Potvin compared it to the Mogilny trade and said he thought it would be a good fit. But, again, the way he was talking I thought the papers had been signed. The host said he would ask Matt Laughlin about it in the next hour, but I got to my office before that interview ended. The first thing I did was check this board . . .
  11. I agree with this 100%. Ted has made the Caps the toughest ticket in town and really has done a fantastic job of marketing the team.
  12. If you're looking for things to do around the Arena, the Spy Museum is always a good bet (although it charges admission, unlike the Smithsonian museums). As far as food goes, I'd try to get into Matchbox, which is one of my favorite restaurants in that area. The area around the Verizon Center actually has plenty of restaurants, but a lot of them are chains. I live in the DC area and hope to be at the game this weekend -- as soon as I buy a ticket. Let me know if you have any other questions.
  13. I don't disagree with your point, but this isn't a fair comparison. The seasons are 10 years apart.
