Honestly I'd like that trade better if Palmieri or the pick wasn't there.

Great trade, in my opinion. He wasn't much of a force during Kings series but really did his thing the first few rounds. Can't wait to see how he welds himself even further to the Devils style of play this season.

I'd rather keep the pick than Palmieri. He was given a ton of chances ('handed a spot', as Deboer said) and could never capitalize on it.

If Zidlicky can play at the same level for a few more years and re-signs at a reasonable price than it is a great trade. We always needed a defenseman like him.

But thats without the discussion of our current logjam on D and who gets a spot for the next few years.

Morrison + Pederson for Alex Mogilny I would say is up there in regards to this talk of "Most important trade in the history of the New Jersey Devils". I'm shocked that wasn't mentioned yet.

Yeah I loved this trade, Mogilny made that offense so dynamic. Those were some of the most fun years to be a Devils fan.

Also, Sykora for Tverdovsky and Friesen ended up being huge.

It wasn't just Sykora for Tverdovsky and Friesen. It was:
http://www.nhltradet...Jersey_Devils/3

Devils trade
Sykora, J-F Damphousse, Mike Commodore, rights to Igor Pohanka

Ducks trade
Friesen, Tverdovsky, Maxim Balmochynykh

The Ducks under Bryan Murray then traded Commodore and J-F Damphousse for Rob Niedermayer 6 months later
http://www.nhltradet.../Commodore,Mike

This of course allowed Brian Burke after Murray resigned to sign Scott Niedermayer when he became a UFA in June 2005. So that trade is indirectly responsible for Niedermayer leaving the Devils. Maybe Murray acquires Rob with other players and picks, but the fact that he used two players who used to be in the Devils system to get Rob Niedermayer always stung me.

Mogilny was so fun to watch. It's a shame that his second run here was so forgettable.

As much as I hated it at the time, Arnott and McKay and a 1st for Langenbrunner and Nieuwendyk.

Also, Sykora for Tverdovsky and Friesen ended up being huge.

Hated & still hate the Sykora trade... friesen was awful...

Kurvers had to be the #1 trade

Almo made Gomez great, no doubt that was a great trade...

Friesen scored some huge goals (most notably Game 7 against Ottawa and 2 in Game 7 against Anaheim), though. Sykora's time was pretty much done in Jersey, especially if the rumors that Stevens had questioned his heart were true.

Either the Kurvers Trade:

To TOR: Tom Kurvers
To NJ: 3rd Overall (Scott Niedermayer)

or the Kovalchuk Trade:

To ATL: Johnny Oduya, Nicklas Bergfors, Patrice Cormier, NJ 1st, NJ 2nd
To NJ: Ilya Kovalchuk, Anssi Salmela, ATL 2nd (Jon Merrill)

Considering how none of what we traded has panned out for ATL/WPG, and we got both a franchise forward and a high-end defense prospect, I think you could make a real strong case that the Kovy deal is the best in Devils history.

i wanted to look it up to make sure, but mogilny was pretty much a passenger for that playoff run. had some important goals but that run was about marty, stevens, lemieux and the A-line

In the playoffs it's all about depth, having a big time scorer on your second line was a huge factor. The speed of Mogilny made matching against the Devils an defensive nightmare.

In 4-5 years it could end up as theft, 3 million bucks and forfeited draft pick included.

Toronto was actually last overall that season for a while...they traded some youth for veterans just to avoid watching another team draft Lindros. Kurvers was actually pretty good for them his first year there...but he was always a problem in his own end.

THE NHL MUST LOVE THE DEVILS - from who else? A RANGER fan!
[Mark Messier]: A big, bald attention whore with a stupid Easter Island-lookin face. - from who else? DaneykoIsGod!

Even when Marty comes back maybe Larry should put Clemmensen to be on the goal during the shootouts.
Can the coach do that ? Switch the goalies 5 seconds to go in overtime?
- Most priceless quote ever posted on a message board.

Martin Brodeur: THE MOST ALL-TIME WINS!, 12 straight seasons of 30+ wins, 3 Stanley Cups, 4 Vezina Trophies, and zero respect from too many so-called Devils "fans" who are either too young or too bandwagon to remember the much darker days of Sean Burke, Craig Billington, Bob Sauve, Alain Chevrier, and the talented but overwhelmed Chico Resch, among many others.

It's easy to support a great player when he's playing at his very best. It takes a true fan to support that same player during those rare moments and stretches when he's not. Babe Ruth went 0-4 some games, and sometimes Wayne Gretzky was held pointless. There may be such a thing as greatness, but no such thing as absolute perfection every single night.

Unless you also want to make the argument that signing Kovalchuk resulted in not re-signing Parise. That's been what TG has argued.
