Official 2014 New York Mets Thread

Harvey's injury basically set back everything. That was a huge blow to the team's 2014 chances before the offseason even began. Hell, I remember saying at the time of the injury during last season that 2014 was probably shot. They still could've made better moves this offseason to make .500 more plausible, kind of like how 2005 was a stepping stone year to 2006. But they decided to ignore most of the holes, keep all the crappy incumbents (see CR's #7 above), and give out highly suspect deals to aging players. I'm not as down on the Colon deal as CR is despite the age and likely regression but the Granderson deal could be a disaster if he falls off a cliff like Steamer thinks he will (.216/.307/.400).

Ahh 2013 redux makes sense.  So basically hope for some growth, and no injuries.

Depends on who gets hurt.  It sounds mean, but a guy like EY going down would actually be a good thing for the Mets, because that's the only way TC doesn't make the continual mistake of playing him.

Re:  2013 redux, the Mets are lucky that their fans are kind of in a semi-defeated "of course we didn't do much" mode.  Yankee fans would be burning their stadium down if they had an off-season like what the Mets just turned in.  The "big gets" were two outfielders that are question marks (one of whom is very pricey) and a fat soon-to-be 41-year-old starting pitcher.  The SS that apparently none of the Mets' higher-ups can stand is still here, Doofus and Davis are still here, and the "leadoff" hitter who was absolutely atrocious at the plate the final two months of 2013 is still here.  Oh, and the bullpen, which has been a trainwreck since Sandy became GM, is still a trainwreck.  His offseason was pretty bad.

nmig, re:  Colon, it's hard not to be worried about a guy who's in the kind of shape he's in.  I would've liked the deal a lot more if it was just for one season, but if he crashes and burns (and that can't be ruled out, not at his age and weight), the Mets are going to have $10 million in dead money in 2015, when they're going to need every penny of it.

Not to put it so bluntly, but Colon has been a fat ass for awhile now. Hasn't stopped him from being good. I worry more about age-related decline/injuries than I do his weight.

Two years for him for a team in the Mets' position might not have been the greatest idea, but I have a feeling Sandy will be shopping him hard come July if he's pitching decently and the young arms are knocking on the door.

I think he's been fat for his entire career, but you worry about a guy like that as he gets older...can't help but wonder when that starts to take a toll.

We're basically in agreement...best-case scenario is that he's only here through July or August, pitches well while he's here, and Sandy is able to move him.  But even in that case, that extra year really hurts...he could've been a perfect rental for someone.  That second year hurts his value, and chances are whatever team would trade for him will want the Mets to eat some of the 2015 money.

Dillon Gee is our opening day starter

Will be so interesting to see which arms get dealt in the near future.  If Gee is having a career year, does Sandy move him at the deadline while they can sell high?

Glad to hear that, re:  Parnell.  One of those guys that you wonder if Sandy would entertain moving at the deadline.

Sounds like the Drew saga may come to an end very soon:

Veteran free-agent shortstop Stephen Drew is willing to sign a one-year contract with the Tigers, a person familiar with Drew’s thinking said today.

Jose Iglesias is supposedly going to miss most, if not all, of the season with broken shins, so this makes a lot of sense. In some ways this doesn't bother me so much, because I rather trade for Franklin or Gregorius.

In bold:  that's where I am now.  I get the feeling Tejada is the Opening Day SS though.  I don't see Sandy being aggressive here.

Is Sandy *ever* aggressive, outside of when it's seemingly totally unnecessary (see: Granderson, Curtis and Colon, Bartolo).

But yeah, not getting my hopes with a trade. Just watch the Marlins poach one of them for Jacob freakin' Turner.

I'm not sure if I totally buy this, I mean yes the mets are obviously using Harvey as an excuse to delay putting a playoff caliber team together, but when Anderson first came in here, Harvey was not expected to be as good as he was as quick as he was, he was sort of found money in a sense late in the 2012 season. If alderson was counting on Harvey being the ace of the 2014 team from the day he walked in his office then I sincerely doubt his ability as a gm.

Apparently there was a regular season major league baseball game played today. For some idiotic reason they had an opening day in Australia, 10 days before real opening day. Dodgers 3-1 over Arizona.

Yeah and they play one more tonight at 10pm ET (which is technically Sunday, 1pm in Australia). I'm not a fan of it either.

This is largely true.  Harvey was not projected to be an ace, though his 2012 call-up raised expectations a little bit.

In an alternate universe where Harvey never gets hurt, I don't think Sandy would've done much more than he did this offseason...the Mets were never going to be in on the big FAs.  nmig said it perfectly...Sandy seems to pick the oddest targets to suddenly show a pulse with (Frank Francisco, Curtis Granderson, Bartolo Colon).

I am about as down as Sandy as I can get, but come 2015, he's all out of excuses.  We'll see if he's capable of doing what needs to be done and showing actual creativity and aggression.

I meant Harvey's injury was a huge setback to the team's chances of contending in 2014 - that's a fact.

Regarding Sandy, I meant he should've done better, period. This offseason is one where they had lots of money coming off the books -- seriously, search posts dating back to 2011 and you'll find posts of mine stating how 2014 is when they could truly reshape the franchise with the amount flexibility they'd have -- and they opted for a half-ass job. They brought in old players with big downside -- or in Young's case, a player who will likely be gone with a good season -- and ignored the rest of the holes on the roster. They made claims to increase payroll and spend, yet all they really did was make up the payroll that came off the books last season. On top of that, they seem content on entering the season with Dice-K, who is old and hasn't been good in years, as the 5th starter and Eric Young Jr., who has never been good, set to get as much if not more playing time than Lagares.

The fact Tejada, Quintanilla, Davis, AND Duda are probably going to make the Opening Day roster this season is incredible. Last October, if you were to tell me more than 2 of these 4 would make the team, I would have laughed hysterically because of how unlikely that seemed. Welp, here we are.

Jose Mijares opted out of his minor league deal with the Red Sox. Hardly exciting, but he's a good lefty matchup guy and could save Scott Rice's arm from falling off. Absolutely better than John Lannan, who is a square peg/round hole as a lefty specialist.

Mijares career vs LHB: 25.3 K%, 6.8 BB%, 2.72 FIP, .623 OPS against

Lannan career vs LHB: 19.1 K%, 7.1 BB%, 4.17 FIP, .755 OPS against

Farnsworth opted out of his minor league deal today after being informed he won't make the team; not a surprise given how down his velocity was.

Edit: Rubin now says maybe not and he might head to AAA.

Mejia was impressive as hell today. I know I'm beating a dead horse but goodness I don't know how stupid our front office could be if they carry Dice-K over him for the 5th starter spot.

This nonsense should finally come to a head Tuesday, which is the deadline for XX(B) minor league free agents to either be added to the roster, sent to the minors for $100k with a June opt-out, or released. Dice-K qualifies as such. It's pretty clear if he's added to the roster it will be as the #5 starter, so this will be very telling.

yeah and add Chris young to that list of odd fa targets. I think the pressure on sandy would have been much greater this season if Harvey continued to dominate last year and was healthy but in really his injury gave sandy a built in excuse to delay another year, but I fully agree that 2015 is his drop dead date. No more excuses.

oh no doubt, no disagreement on any of this, I just think that Harvey's injury is what has given him a bit of a pass this offseason (rightfully or wrongfully). If we had the same exact offseason with a healthy Harvey I think there's a lot more criticism directed at sandy for lackluster moves. In fairness though, I also think that Harvey's injury made him hesitant to move some of the pitching prospects.

Hypothetically speaking, what if Harvey doesn't come back the same? Or wheeler blows out his arm this year? I mean, we can't keep going through a cycle looking forward to next year, using every setback as an excuse to delay putting a competitive team together. So all in all I agree with you, it's time to cut bait with dead weight and bring in major league players.
