That means Nieds is a free agent and over a half dozen teams will have over twice the cap room as the devils.

Oh, wow, a whole six teams. Last I checked, there were 30 teams in the NHL. We're in pretty good position with regard to the cap.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

I don't get the animosity toward Niedermeyer. We have no idea what his mindset will be in a post-cap world. For all we know, he may decide that New Jersey is the best place to end his career.

I think he'll either stay here or go home to Vancouver. I'll be surprised if he ends up anywhere else, and if it turns out to be because of money, that's when the animosity will start. If he makes more money with the Canucks than he would have here I won't blame him, but if it's anywhere else I'll be a bit irked. I won't hate his guts like some of you are hellbent on doing, but I can't say I'll be cheering him either.

Rowdy if Nieds stays in NJ then he was a damn fool for turning down that deal pre-lockout. And I don't think Nieds is stupid. I think he wants to leave, that's the only rational reason for turning down that deal (unless he drank Goodenow's Kool-Aid and thought he'd get more post-lockout which wouldn't qualify as rational thought) Even with the rollback, that deal would have been worth $5.5-6 million a year, he'll be fortunate to get that with a $39 million cap and teams struggling to get under it.

One thing's for sure, with Nieds as good as gone, the Devils can't kick Rafalski to the curb now like most of you wanted :P

Rowdy, I wish Nieds the best wherever he ends up. I have no animosity towards him whatsoever RIGHT NOW. I can't speak for the rest of the fans, but of course I hope he remains a Devil; I'm just being realistic. I never understood the whole "oh I hope he meets the shoulder of #4" BS, because its not like Nieds is sitting here badmouthing the organization, the fans, etc. It's not like he didn't do amazing things for us, either. Sure, I probably won't go out of my way to cheer for him on another team (as I do for other former Devils, like Sykora for example), but I won't hate him for it. I can completely understand that his mindset may very well be that he wants to start somewhere fresh and open a new chapter in his career. Not every player WANTS to spend their entire careers with one team. Should we wish him ill-will because of that? I certainly don't think so -- that's just silly.

I do agree about the money though. If we do end up finding out that he just went for more money, then yeah, that would suck. I still don't think I'd hate him though. Until that's the case (and IF that's even the case), I'll keep my mouth shut.

My annoyance at Nieds is that we offered him alot of money, he was appreciated and would be the Captain within the next year or so (I believe #4 will retire after this season...if he comes back at all) and he turned it/us down.

I sort of feel like we/Devils organization nurtured this kid into a winner and he turns his back on us because he thinks he can get more elsewhere. My heart dropped when I heard his Norris acceptence speech. I was just about to buy his jersey for next season with the "C" on it.

I guess I feel betrayed by him.

I have been getting ready for him to leave since his Norris speech and when he turned down Lou's offer. The only team that I'll be pissed if Nieds joins is the Flyers. And the rumors that he's going there are making me crazy. I hope it's not true.

I don't think Philly can afford him. Philly would have to drop alot of starting salary players to fit him, which would make them less of a threat. It also doesn't make sense especially if he is not going to make any more money a few hours away.

Some of you must realize that this lockout has product a common goal for all and that's MONEY.

Loyality is gone for every in the NHL. It's all about MONEY

Each player will want to make MONEY and some will get excited about winning the cup.

Niedermayer did terrific things for the Devils. He did what he got paid to do and did it very well. he has never bad mouthed the Devils or any of the players.

I can only wish him the best for him and his family. If he didn't like the deal the Devils offered for whatever reason that's his decision alone.

Good luck to him, and if he chooses to stay he will do his best to give his all for the Devils. The same way he will play for any team.

He deserves the max pay allowed under the new terms he is a premier player heading to the Hall of Fame.

If Nieds wants to leave because he needs a change in scenery, fine. Most of us don't live in the same house and work at the same job our entire lives, and we shouldn't expect him to do it either. If he wants to leave because he's looking for a payday, well, have a nice life. However, my point is that he probably won't get signifcantly more than he'd make here, so in the end he may just decide he doesn't need to leave as much as he thought he did.

And yes, he's a massive fool for turning down Lou's pre-lockout offer, but at the same time I can't fault him for keeping his options open. I don't know if he thought he could get more on the free agent market post-lockout, but if he was drinking the tainted Kool-Aid, he probably wasn't expecting a cap.

Whatever the reason and regardless of money. Let's wish him the best.

Maybe he wants a different style of hockey.

Maybe it's location.

Wahtever, he has given us all a great game while here.

And yes, hopefully he will stay. Certainly the Devils could use him.

I disagree, now he'll get tremendously more from whomever the highest bidder is (devils or anyone else), because now $500,000 could represent a 10% pay increase.

And when you now no longer have a shot of making 7-10 mil a year for the remainder of your career, you have to let that factor in your decision.

I dunno, GR. I think the NHL is going to become a lot like the NFL, where money talks, but loyalty still exists. Look at the Patriots -- they've been able to retain their core players and spend their money wisely. And because the franchise is devoted to winning, it's an appealing place to play; look at Rodney Harrison, Corey Dillon, and now David Terrell, all "problem players" in other places that are looking to turn it around because they want to WIN. Sounds a bit like the Devils, taking on "projects" and seeing if they pan out.

Now, on the other side of that coin, I definitely agree with you that there will be a lot more turnover per teams. It will become rare for players to spend their entire career on one or two teams. But, on the plus side, given the new salary floor & ceiling, teams that are poor for a while will clear up cap room and can hit the free agent market to try and become contenders with a bit more ease than previously.

Good old Get Real. Hate 'em when they're here, love them when they leave.

Niedermayer can get plenty of money here. If he wants to leave, fine, it's no big deal to me. Sure it'll hurt the team, but the Devils have a choice: Rafalski or Niedermayer. I'd rather take my chances with Rafalski and hope that extra cash can go towards helping out our left wings.

Typical Triumph got it wrong again.

Only Stevens fits the bill IMO and that's hate him here and anywhere else but I do give him lots of credit for playing well when he has a good game or series of games.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

When have you EVER given Stevens credit for anything?
