Devils are making their move

It's a thread because it's happening and that's all that's happening.  If we were in the playoffs right now we'd be talking about what we need to do better or change to success and get past round 1, and debating which opponents we match up better against, etc, but since we're not...this is all we have.    What else is there to talk about?  This is a Devils forum after all, but if you don't want to talk about the Devils "making their move" and still passing teams in the standings which may be counter-productive, then perhaps this place should become a ghost town for the next 5 months and all of you should visit a March Madness board.  Personally, I hate college basketball, and all college sports for that matter, so even though I am not going to make a thread like this myself, I don't mind seeing them (or even participating in them), because to me it's still better than the alternative.  I love hockey and I love the Devils, and are hard as it may be to swallow sometimes, I'll still talk about potentially-mindless topics like this over complete silence or other uninteresting sports, any day of the week.

No one is questioning the opinion of the poster.  They are questioning why this is its own thread when there are at least 2 or 3 other threads discussing pretty much the exact same thing.

Because it is reality, a very stupid strategy and while we all know it is wrong to proceed this way it needs to be discussed because it is exactly what this team is about.

Yeah!!!  What are these professional athletes thinking by trying to win out there?  Lou has clearly lost his mind icing a team at all.  Why don't we just forfeit every game the rest of the season to get a better pick, am I right?  :doh1:

To over take the Flyers and maybe Dallas.  Can someone tell me why?

What's best for the Devils?   IMO a pick in the lower section.

For the organization, yest.  However, the players on the ice are playing for pride, jobs next season.  It is one thing for a GM to hope they lose.  Another for a player to hope they lose or not try to win every game.

Oh c'mon, that goes on in every community, and it's the nature of forums in general.   No one uses the search feature, and everyone who posts a topic always thinks that they're probably the first one who's thought of it, or that they're worth enough of creating a new thread even if another already exists.  You have nearly 9,000 posts here, this shouldn't be new to you  :P

Of course it's not new to me and I know that is the nature of forums in general.  However most forums have mods that discourage this and usually delete repeat threads like this.  Since the mods here tend to be more hands-off, we tend to have to police ourselves.

In the end this is no skin off my back either way.  I was just pointing out why people were questioning why this thread exists and the reason wasn't to take a personal attack on the OP.

The majority of the players we have now will be playing for us next season. The better we close out the season the better chance of making the playoffs next year. 2012 anyone?

I don't buy that the finish of 10-11 had much to do with the playoff success in 11-12 at all.

I'm also not putting much stock in this roster winning the kind of games like they have will be so important for next year. I just can't watch a game like the one against Pittsburgh, and say man this team is building something here.

I wouldn't say they made any difference in the playoffs but that was the same team + Parise coming out of the gate in 2011-2012

You're not alone.  While my heart warms each time the Devils win a game, I also have little to hang my hat on and be hopeful for any type of consistency or potential for the future.

Part of me wants to blame myself for not seeing this coming a few years ago, but really it was a culmination of several unfortunate things kind of creating the perfect storm, for us to go from a perrennial contender year in and year out for 15 years, to all of a sudden doing a 180 and not making the playoffs for a 5 year period of so.   There really isn't one thing to blame i.e. the natural departure of Parise wanting to go home and play in Minn, Kovalchuk abruptly leaving to go 'home' as well, Brodeur declining and retiring, and various free agents not panning out (Brunner, Ryder, Clowe, Havlat, etc), but the Kovalchuk one I think really hurts the most.  We signed him to such a long contract to be the cornerstone of our offense for the next decade or so, and having him on the team made us very dynamic, and in the years to come just his presence probably would have attracted other offensive talent as well, instead of looking like the goal scoring wasteland that we have for the past few seasons.

I don't think that's what DP26 was saying, he was just saying that the better a team finishes one year means it's more likely that they finish better the next year.  Had 2010-11 continued to be a disaster, who knows how the Devils decide to move forward, and who knows what it means for that team in general.  Bayes Theorem is the thing to consult here.

Can the Devils win 45 games playing how they played against Pittsburgh?  Probably not, but you'd have to imagine the team would be better next year.

The 11-12 team wasn't that great for a good portion of the season (12-12-1 through the first 25 games). Different coach, different system. A lot of additions and subtractions. Far from the same team.

End of the day you're looking at same core of players. Elias, Kovy, Zajac, Zubrus, Broduer, Clarkson, etc. Tri is spot on with what I was trying to get across. Had the Devils not gotten going in the 2011 second half, I don't see the them close to .500 opening the season

Zomg DO U NO A GUY WHO KNOS HOW TO FIX THE LOTTERIE?!?!?!?

Nobody here actually thinks we have a legitimate chance at it, but we didn't have a chance when we got Larsson, either.

Do those things even come close to comparing?

Just so sick of "fans" who root for the team to tank.

Actually, it's pretty simple, and been brought up before.  When a guy is playing as well as Cory, you're going to win some games that you really shouldn't, and we've seen our fair share of these over this 17-9-4 burst.

Dallas has largely been getting poor goaltending all season.

Philly has been getting strong puck-stopping when Mason has been in net, but awful play from Zepp and Emery.  The latter two have appeared in 38 games, which says plenty.

The Devils look like they're going to finish somewhere from 6th to 9th overall.  1-5 is out of reach, but the only way the Devils were going to be in play for one of those spots was for Cory to either be lousy or hurt.

Remember that the schedule is brutal down the stretch.  After tonight (@Sabres), they have 11 games left.  Check this out (bolded are playoff bound or hopefuls...Devils' record against each team in parenthesis):

3/21 Islanders (0-1-2)

3/23 Kings (1-0-0)

3/26 @Capitals (1-3-0)

3/28 @Hurricanes (2-0-1)

3/29 Ducks (0-1-0)

3/31 @Blue Jackets (2-1-0)

4/3   Canadiens (0-2-0)

4/4   @Rangers (0-1-1)

4/7   Rangers (0-1-1)

4/9   @Lightning (2-0-0)

4/11 @Panthers (2-0-0)

Of course, anything can happen, and there's a chance that the Devils can somehow do better during those final 11 games than any of us could possibly expect, but suffice it to say that several of those teams are going to be looking at the Devils and thinking to themselves "These are two points we need to come away with."  We've seen that the Devils often don't play well against upper-echelon teams this season (they're 6-9-4 against the bolded teams).  Everything is pointing to the Devils having a very rough time down the stretch, starting with the Isles, who haven't played since Tuesday and will probably come out flying.

Actually they do, because statistically we had a worse shot of winning the lottery that year than we do this year. Edited by MadDog2020
