GDT New Jersey Devils at Flyers

I do. And it matters - with more experience you'll see that wins can tell a lot about the weaknesses of the team just like losses. Not being able to finish has been a problem of ours all year. We won that game - great - but we lost the third again.

True our third period struggles are still a major concern.

I do feel however that a lot of that today was that our top players were on the bench more in the third as the flyers are known to take liberties on the top players of the opposing teams when they are being blown out. I'd rather the other team gets a few goals past us and we still win the game without any injuries. Hell even rinaldo tried to slew foot praise there.

Why is everyone whining about this? We won.

If this was a playoff game, we would be up 1-0 (or if you want to count the season series then 2-2). The number of goals don't count but the wins do.

I don't care about the shutout. If we win 6-2 or even 6-3, whatever. I'm not saying we should have played top guys and risked anything to hold on to a 6 goal lead. But getting outshot 24-1 is unacceptable regardless of the situation. We let them dominate every aspect of the game and come within 2 goals with 6 minutes to go. We shouldn't have to panic and throw out our best guys to secure a win in a game where we led 6-0 with 20 minutes to go. I'm still happy we won, but the way we did sums up how we've played with leads this entire season. We need to learn how to play with the lead if we want to have any success in the rest of the season and the playoffs (if we make it). We always piss away our leads by slacking off. All you have to do is control the puck and cycle a bit and kill time. It seems like we never even touched the puck in the third, let alone had any offensive zone time.

If you saw my earlier response to benoors I said that our third period struggles are still a major concern.

Also where did I mention anything about a shutout? I never watch a devils game thinking we will be getting a shutout, even when we hold the opposition scoreless with a minute left in the game.

Parise was on the ice for the last 3 PHI goals. Elias was on for 2 of the 4. True they may have played a little less but if we had lost it would have been no excuse. I'm happy we won but am so disappointed we couldn't enjoy an all around solid blowout win today. we could use one.

You know, after seeing the highlight a few times, I actually think Zubrus didn't trip Giroux in the first before the shorthanded goal. Bill Clement is still whining about it on Comcast Sportsnet but the more I see it, the more I think it was a good non-call. If it were called a slash, it would be harder to argue. But if it was a slash then it was also a dive by Giroux, because the stick was up around the midsection and he flopped down to his knees. Either way I think the Flyers fans are wrong if they think they were hosed on that play.

Not that it matters anymore, just sayin.

Honestly I pretty much rarely expect the devils to blow out anyone anymore. At least not with the team we have iced the past two or three seasons. We will probably never see the frequency of us blowing out our opponents as we did ten years ago.

We are a 6-8 seed team. A vast majority of wins will e a struggle and so far this season they have been. I'm just happy with the win now and just want them to win tomorrow.

Calm down. My response wasn't meant directly at you only, I just quoted your post as a starting point. Other people were saying stuff like "who cares that we didn't get the shutout, we need to protect our top players."

Seems like a win-win to me. Something teachable, to use as an example for the players in the future about securing the win. And 2 points, against one of the best teams in hockey. Hell yeah

And beating Philly always feels awesome!

+1

I don't like NJ's 3rd period play but it was one of those things. The refs put their whistles away and helped out the Flyers. The Devils were resting their best players. Then the Flyers put in 2 quick goals with the Devils' two top defensive D in the box and the game is close. Should NJ have gotten a few more shots? Sure. But I don't think protecting 4 goal leads is a priority of this team. Once it got to two, the Devils played a little better and probably allowed at most 2 or 3 scoring chances.

that KOvy onetimer was big, im not trying to make a big deal but the devs have not stuck up for eachother and this was a big prob imo

and elias started it off against the habs

aaaaand volchy set the tone, a few timely hits in their zone opens up some chances.

Lol I wasn't upset at you just a little confused about the shutout reference since you replied to my post.

Like I said I really don't care much or expect shutouts. We also do need to protect our top players. Praise could have gotten hurt there towards the end and we cannot afford that.

The four goals in that period was terrible and a major letdown, but this is a chronic problem showing its ugly head again. We did not lose thank god but it does feel like we are overall getting a little better. We did come back from behind in the third period the last two games.

Oh, and let's not forget: the Devils scored 6 goals today. 6.

Dammit I keep agreeing with you more and more. You are right this is an amazing thing for this team to score 6 goals and i don't know why more people are making a big deal out of that fact.

You're right, as usual. But it's just astounding that this team can make every win as frustrating as possible. It'd be nice to get an easy, dominant win once in a while. Obviously I wasn't expecting one going into Philly today, but after getting a 6-0 lead I was. Guess I should know better by now.

Bingo.

It's no mystery that our depth is especially weak right now with the injuries up front.

Plus we had three of our best players in the box at once towards the end there.
