spyro
Well we have had a nice little run without Marty Brodeur. Yes I know that Parise is putting up the biggest stats on the team, but there is no denying that Patrik Elias is the heart of the team. I think that we go as Patty goes. Yes he is that good, and makes everyone better like Zach, Zubie, and Gio.
sundstrom
i agree with this to a point. marty is always marty. he's a given. the team needs contributions from key guys - parise and martin to mention two. but yes, elias playing well virtually guarantees this team's success. SatansDevils
I would have to say the heart right now of this team is Parise. He plays 110% every game night in and night out. He does it all out there on the ice. He also leads this team in scoring and without him this team would be in bad shape. Elias too has led this team to some big wins in OT this season and right now teams look at the Devils and try to shut down parise first. In years past it was Elias, but right now with this team I would have to say Parise. It is just a matter of time (maybe 2-3 years) before Parise will be the Devils next captain. DuffMan4027
I agree Parise will be a future captain but i think with Parise playing and scoring like this we were talking about surviving until Marty gets back. with him an Elias playing the way they have been we are now talking about how we are being competitive and moving up. that's why Elias is the heart of the team he takes us from a tough team to play to a winning team. What I dont get is why he (Elias) is playing so well now. We all know he has the talent to be a point a game player, but what has changed. Do you think Sutter lit a fire under his ass? Or maybe he wants to prove doubters wrong?
NewarkDevil5
What I think changed is that Parise has taken the burden of scoring off of him. Also, both top lines have been getting more ice time under Sutter. All in all, Elias is in Mogilny's position from 2000: no pressure, lots of talent. When it became clear that this team could survive on Zach alone (just like it was clear when AlMo got here that the A-line had things covered) Elias started to thrive on the lack of attention. peteyvegas
Something has come over Patrick. I felt that he had quit!! I've been hoping that the last couple of years was just recuperation from his illness and not complacency with his game, but I wasn't encouraged. Lately, though, it seems to me that he wants to play again. I hope it's true and not just a short burst of entergy. It's already cost him a captaincy. We all know he has the talent to be a point a game player, but what has changed. Do you think Sutter lit a fire under his ass? Or maybe he wants to prove doubters wrong? I think it stems from the current Madden/Pandolfo lack-of-a-checking line thing. Patrik Elias isn't going to post sparkling numbers when he's keeping the bench warm for 50 minutes a game because the Claude Juliens of the world keep the two least-skilled players (Madden and Pandolfo, no offense) on the ice for half an hour. You know why this team has struggled to score goals over the years? Because while 29 other teams in the league are trying to score goals against the Devils, the Devils are simply trying to keep those opposing players off the scoresheet. It's about time someone (Sutter) figured out that you can only give up 1 or 2 goals every single game, yet still lose every single game 1-0 or 2-1. Elias is simply benefiting from the mentality that we NEED TO SCORE TO WIN. He's getting ice time to play like Patrik Elias, and it shows. Chimaira_Devil_#9
Paul Martin should also be considered along with Parise and Elias. We were awfull without him in the lineup, as soon as he came back there was an imediate improvement.

Truth be said. Sutter has finally figured it out, Parise is on teams worry about him scoring, now they have to worry abouit the Elias line. Sutter is giving them plenty of ice time. Soon the Rolston line will click and its 2000/2003 all over again. I would love to place an 09 after the I in my screen name. Rangers in a free fall? They have all the health and are losing sound good to me? Maybe some key players to be dealt to make room in the the cap.

moj8681
I was about to post the exact same thing. Paulie is incredibly underrated. Martin is definitely the most under-rated defenseman in the LEAGUE. It's hard to believe he played alongside Scott Niedermayer and Scott Stevens for a season... Oh the what ifs... With the cap going down, even if it stays the same, the rags are sooo screwed for the next couple of years. In the offseason, Lou could REALLY stick it to the Rags if he could sign Dubinsky to an offer sheet. The rags will be lucky if they could even offer him 2M. I'm going to love the watching the team fall apart. 33M locked up bettween Gomez, Drury, Rosival, Redden, and the queen

And I think the Rags will need to do some major movements in order to re-sign so many RFAs. Besides Lundqvist, the rest is untradable at all due to their cap hit. By the end of that phantom season, the league would've thought Colin White and his +33 rating were worth something, and we would've made a deadline deal for Chris Pronger. Damn lockout.
