2014 Draft Thread

Lou seems to think you can just ice a lopsided defensive minded team and be competitive.

To be fair it worked in 1995.

When Lou goes I agree he needs to take Conte with him and this team needs a new philosophy. I'd like them to bring in a gm who puts some focus on offense and entertainment. It's been like 25 years of a defensive focused team. IMO it's why none of the big ufa's even consider us.

It's been a good ride and Lou deserves a 00 jersey to be retired in the rafters for what he's done for this team and nj but it's time for a change. Always love you Lou.

Offense is created through strong defense. If in 4 years you have a defense with Larsson, Merrill, Severson, Santini, Gelinas and Greene/Jacobs then you have a very large, mobile group who can shoot and move the puck. The faster you move the puck out of your end, the quicker you can get on the attack. Just sign Sekac and make a crafty trade and the forwards will be fine.

Remember with one buyout NJ is in prime position to pick up a forward slightly overpriced on the cheap.

You're right about the defense thing, but it's going to be useless when you have no one to finish.

im gonna wait til the buyout period is over and a few days after free agency... but if we havent got rid or Volch or Salvadore/lose Fayne and that we havent somehow got some decent scoring help by then, and still hear Lou say he likes the team after all this sh!t.... all the pro Lou blind faith protectors will have to put me on ignore for quite awhile.

my hatred of Lou's stubbornness has been rising at an alarming rate in the last few years. i simply can't take it anymore.

I mean I agree with you but even when we had Stevens, Nieds, Dano, Ralfi, etc. we were still a low scoring team usually only winning by one goal.

Love the  jacobs pick... Everybody thinks we only need forward! hey guys we draft this year will be nhl Ready in 3-4 years... so calm down... Issue with forward have to be address by trade... That why i think we should trade larrson for a dynamic young player or sign guys like moulson and buy out the crap of salvador, or Volchenkov (but i love him)

If we keep our young 3 D we need them to play in NHL next year... Larsson, Merril and Gélinas.

Lou won't use a compliance buyout. Fayne will be gone. We'll get Brian Gionta on a long contract for big money.

The fact that we have already Larsson, Merrill, Severson, Santini, Gelinas, Greene, and could have Fayne makes Jacobs a wasted pick.  That's especially the case when, outside of Henrique, there is no one in our system that is under 25 that you can even hope might score 30 in a season.

Best player available is not a luxury the Devils can afford any more, even on its own terms.

Jacobs probably won't smell NHL till he is 21/22, at that point Merrill maybe pushing UFA and it is giving you options.

This is utter silliness.  One of these guys will almost certainly not pan out or be traded (or both).  Jacobs is 18 - by the time he is 22, Gelinas will be 27.  Andy Greene will be 35 going on 36.  I assure you this will look very dumb in 3 years.

Oh goody, we're preparing for Merrill's FA but we're not preparing for Elias/Jagr to retire and filling other needs up front.

exactly, we won't replace those guys unless we overpay on the market. And on the market, god knows if guys will even want to sign here. its a big gamle to rely on UFAs so much now. we have NOTHING in our system

Lou and Conte are stuck in a 1995/2003 vacuum. It's obvious They can't relate to today's NHL and don't give a damn what the rest of the league is doing. They stick to their "Devils Hockey" flowchart and ignore evetything else around them with blinders on. Gionta is most likely coming here. Actually, I'd be shocked at this point if he wasnt.

Devils could've taken Point over Chatham in the 3rd, Audette over Rehill in the 5th, Watson over Dudek in the 6th, and an overager who produces like Vail over Baddock in the 6th. Unreal.

This is the post I'd like to address as a jumping off point.  If I had to put odds on it now, I'd say that one of Point, Audette, Watson, and Vail becomes an average or above NHLer.  It's very easy to panic late in the draft about misses and hits but look, most of these guys are going to miss - they may look like they come closer, because they are scoring players, but they'll probably miss in the end.  Of course, of the 4 guys the Devils took past round 2, odds are that 0 of them will be an average or above NHLer.  But on the other hand, all the guys that teams took over these guys that people wanted?  Some of those guys will make the NHL, and some of them will be average or above players.

As it stands, it would've been nice to take one of these types of lottery tickets.  Dudek looks intriguing - but pretty much anything to me beats big dudes from Canadian junior, which of course NJ took 3 of today.

Repeat after me, there is no one in our system that was born after 1990  that can score goals outside of Henrique, and who even knows if the bottom will drop out there.

In three years it's far more likely that we're still going to be complaining that the organization is not giving its defensemen clearly defined roles, while we're scraping the bottom of the barrell for scoring on the third day of free agency with the likes of Mason Raymond.

The point is that it shows Lou and Conte are utterly tone deaf.

I won't repeat after you because the Devils have Reid Boucher who put up extremely impressive numbers at Sarnia and had about as good a rookie AHL season coming of junior as any Devils prospect has in the last 10 years.  On his callup he didn't look out of place, either.  A long NHL career is likely.

The Devils probably think that one of Bell, Kujawinski, Coleman, Matteau, Black, Johnson, Thomson, Wood, Pietila, or Kerfoot will be something at the NHL level.  They may add to that list with a free agent as well.

Elite level scoring, obviously they lack, outside of Boucher who likely will not become a consistent 30 goal guy.  They were going to lack that anyway after this draft.

I've seen the Henrique comparison thrown out by Devils brass regarding Quennville.  In his draft eligible season, JQ outscored AH rather handily and played on a much worse team than Windsor.  Obviously Henrique developed very well, but I think Q can really be a player

If Henrique sticks at wing, clearly the biggest need for the franchise is not winger, where they have a bunch of guys who can at least plausibly play the position, but center, where they have Zajac and maybe Josefson and a whole lot of nothing going forward.

Yeah, it's just not clear yet what the Devils want to do with Henrique.  He had early success centering Clowe and Ryder this year, but really took off while playing wing with Elias.  I hope they leave him alone at LW and get a 3C via free agency.

So being at the draft these past two days was interesting.  Couple notes:

1) Flyers fans hate the Penguins.  I mean, they REALLY hate the Penguins.

2) It's pretty special to watch these kids get their names called.  We were actually seated right next to a kid who went to Colorado today (3rd round, blanking on the name.  Kid was from Quebec, parents were speaking french) but watching the celebration was awesome.  The parents in particular were just besides themselves.. water works and everything.  You can tell this really means a lot to them (obviously).

3) Lou and Conte apparently just don't get it..or have a very interesting way of going about building this team.  One highlight from the day - I was sitting on the side closest to the Devils table, and around the...5th or 6th round, Conte got up to leave the floor (presumably to go the bathroom or something) and I actually yelled as he walked by "COME ON CONTE, WE NEED SCORING FORWARDS!" like a total moron.  He actually stopped, turned around to look at me and mouthed something...I thought I saw him say "don't worry about it" or something along those lines..but the people I was with were certain he said something a little less...uh..friendly.  He probably thought I was an idiot but I don't care, I was just pleased to have gotten his attention.

4) That Wells-Fargo Center has aged really well.  Still seems like a really, really nice arena and it's what..15+ years old now?  And Xfinity Live! is a blast.  Wish the Devils had a place like that near the arena.
