Preseason GDT: Devils @ The Rangers

Thanks for this. Trying to figure out what would have to take place for Boucher to make the team besides Clowe somehow not being ready.

I'm not sure what the situation is with Ryan Carter and any secret handshake deal his agent has with Lou (if any), but I think he and Tootoo will be fighting for a spot, and Tootoo can definitely win it. As Sarge said in the chat, Carter is more versatile...but Tootoo has the higher ceiling.

Great night for Boucher. Ryder showing he can score some goals. What will they do with Brunner? Not sure any NHL team is looking to take his entire salary back without giving up a player that the Devils don't need. Europe?

I don't know, but if Boucher keeps playing like he did tonight, it'll be damn hard to cut him. He was all over the place. It certainly would be a nice problem to have. Edited by MadDog2020

No one's going to pay Brunner's salary except the KHL and I doubt he wants to go there, so I doubt the Devils are going to want to pay him to play elsewhere.  And Europe would leave the Devils with a 1.6M dead cap hit - no, I think someone would take Brunner if the Devils picked up $500k in salary, because he's really low-risk and he clearly has some skills, it's just a matter of getting the right guys to play with him.

I think the best course of action for Brunner is to let him sit in the press box and play when injuries happen or there is subpar play. Jagr is 42 and Havlat is an injury waiting to happen. If Ryder goes cold for a while he's a nice guy to have coming in. It's not ideal, but he'll still get 50 games or so

I actually really liked that Havlat Elias Zubrus line. I liked what I saw from Ryder, besides the goals he was decent in the corners and got some decent chances on the rush and in the slot. Boucher was an aninal all night, hope he makes the lineup. I know its only preseason but they looked more dynamic with a better offensive mindset. Maybe it was just me...

First time poster here! I was overall pleased with last nights game. They played aggressively, forechecking and getting after the puck. They did a pretty good job of keeping the puck out of their own end. Preseason or not, any game where you can get two goals on Lundquist in the first period is a good one!

welcome to the forum! Hope to see you around throughout the season!

Pleased with the result, I'll echo what others said regarding some of the positives and negatives. The only thing I'll add is god I pray Cory doesn't get injured. Kinkaid did have one or two beauty saves but I have little faith in him and negative faith in clemmer.

Had a great night at The Garden. I'm now 4-1 there all time (gonna keep going, regardless of the cost, it's too much F'ing fun there when we win). I could probably do a better job evaluating players watching on TV but will do my best here based on what I saw.

Aside from the usual suspects (Boucher, Henrique, Ryder), I'll go with the less obvious guys as some standouts for me: I liked what Havlat was doing all night. Man, he has some jump to him, didn't think there was any speed in his game, but I really enjoyed what he brings to the table. It'll be interesting to see him as a RW to Cammalleri on the LW, he can really make things happen if he can stay healthy.

Kaberle looked very good at times, despite only having had 2-3 practices. Don't forget that, folks, these PTOs have only been here for 3 days. We play a meticulously planned system that took DeBoer months to instill within the team his first season here. If a guy on a tryout looks "pretty good" on day 3 of being with the team in this system, he might be worth another look. I hope Kaberle plays the Philly game, he deserves another good look.

On the flipside, there are players you can see won't have any promise here. It's a blessing that DeBoer went with Komisarek last night, as I don't think we'll waste any more of his/our time, can't see him making it past tomorrow/Thursday the latest. Same with Fedotenko, but to a lesser extent, maybe they get another few good looks at him throughout the course of the week, but knowing how he's played the last few years and how he played last night, I can't see him being here for more than another 3-4 days.

As for the experience, noticed a lot more "real" Rangers fans. Cheaper/preseason ticket prices and Yankees/Jets games will thin the herd for sure. I wasn't heckled once, not while walking in or while in my seats. No mention of their playoff run or us not making the playoffs, like I thought there'd be. I wasn't heckled at all the last few times I went to MSG but more for reasons that everyone was a tourist or a suit. This time, you could see there were a lot of fans who were priced out of their playoff run and just wanted to see their team play hockey, I respect that. Devils fans were out in good number again as well, as I've noticed the past 2 years, MSG is very Devils-friendly these days, or it's more an indication of what I've been saying for years, that those Devils kids who were young in the 90s are growing up, and our fanbase is coming of age; our playoff run in 2012 was the first evidence of this but our rising season ticket numbers and general age demographic you see at games is more evidence. Nowadays Devils-Rangers games at MSG are maybe about 10-15% Devils (more, at times, last year), and mostly kids in their mid-to-late-20s. Good signs for the fanbase, now hopefully they can win more this season.

My experiences (mostly positive) at MSG always remind me how bottom-of-the-barrel the kinds of Rangers "fans" that come see them in New Jersey are. The biggest New Jersey-born scumbag douche kids who know nothing about hockey are the ones to go see "their team" at The Rock. We really get the scraps of Rangers "fans" in our building who've probably never been to MSG before, and would get kicked out there if they acted like that.

I only saw part of the 2nd and the 3rd, but the fact that only 2 or 3 NYR players had an even strength corsi  above 0 certainly explains who had the puck for most of the game.

Although it's only a preseason game, I think it's actually more important that the team scored 5 times. If they can get a little offensive confidence, we could see a drastic improvement over last year where the possession numbers were good, but that didn't necessarily correlate into wins.

was hoping to see a little more out of josefson last night i felt like he really didnt do much

I thought he did OK actually.  I really do not get why a lot of people said he played like garbage.  I mean he wasn't great but he wasn't terrible either (outside that dumb penalty with under 10 seconds left in the game).

we play philly thursday? will it be televised?

nope.

We limited them to 2-3 shots in the beginning of the second/third periods for like 10 minutes, can't even imagine how frustrating it was for the Rangers fans, it was all-out domination for 1/2 of the game, and pretty decent possession/domination the rest of the game, before the last 6 or so minutes... It was the kind of performance we saw 20-30 times last year but were on the losing end because we couldn't convert... Hopefully this is a sign of things to come on offense. Considering 2 of the guys on D will end up being on the team, letting in the 4 goals was a lot less troubling.

Even moreso because Komisarek was directly at fault for three of them

I agree, especially since two of those goals came against Lundqvist. Obviously he isn't in mid season form, but neither are the forwards. It's very encouraging.

I wasn't crazy about Kinkaid 's performance, frankly. I realize the last goal was a total defensive breakdown, but I also think an NHL goalie should get that one.

i thought keith looked better than scott.. will be interesting to see what happens between the two of them for the back up job..but to be honest im not really all that sure i want either of them for the back up job but were getting one of them so. Edited by 2ELIAS6

Both looked rusty, but it's still the first game.

My fear though is if neither improve then Pete and Lou might start eyeing Brodeur again and I really really really don't want to start going that road.

Clemmers and Kinkaid were both about as rusty as Lundqvist and Talbot, if not less so...

I wouldn't worry too much. In my opinion, Kinkaid overall shows more promise. He let a rusty couple goals in (behind an inadequate defense he doesn't know and is not used to), but stole a couple toward the end as well. I like the kid a lot. Clemmers let a rusty couple goals in but was otherwise not as tested.

Was that the slap shot one? A slapshot from that close is guess work. All a goalie can do is try to be big and lucky. I was more interested in the big save after that one. It showed that he kept fighting through. I have a feeling no matter who the back up is, though, that Cory will be approaching 70 games this year if he's healthy.

i can`t agree. 4th goal is a big mistake of tootoo and jj.they left Fast alone and give him that nice chance. komisarek played against mueller and he did his job against muller well, kelly played against glass. why jj went in the forechek situation where were two our players (one of them was defensman) and leave defensman position. in other topic in hell=forum we may read about our forechek tactick and jj as a center made big bad mistake.
