sal will be hurt soon, why trade Larsson???? we let fayne for walk a million (give or take) we need to keep adam here

although if we go on a 20 game winning street he will collect lots of splinters from that bench LOL

im not sure that they would choose to slot in larsson even if sal did get hurt..they want to keep that veteran dman in the line up, one of gelinas or severson will come out and larsson will go in, i doubt they would take merril out enless he was having a bad stretch of games.

Adam Larsson just has not done anything in his brief career to warrant replacing anyone with him at this point. People are so high on him because of his draft position and for no other reason. At some point, if he isn't performing, his draft position becomes irrelevant.

Just like in the business world, you can hire a guy who went to Harvard, and that will cease to matter if he can't do his job correctly.

Not to say Adam has been horrible, but what has he done?

I agree that he hasn't done enough to warrant replacing one of the young guys who have passed him on the depth chart, but it's entirely possible he's better than Salvador at this point. They're two different types of defenseman, but Sal's usefulness is limited at this point to that of a PK specialist that needs to be sheltered at even strength.

Oh, I agree with that 100%. But we know they aren't replacing Salvador anytime soon. I've made reference to that before (either in this thread or another) that maybe next year that's what they do and they give Larsson a 5 year deal. I'd have no issue with that.

exactly what has Gelinas done?  with the exception of his slap shot he is not as good as Larsson...  His passing is weak, his defensive game the same, yes he has a bomb form the point, but it gets blocked more than it gets through...

I remember alot of people getting on Neids for similar reason the 1st few years of his career...

What he certainly did last year was improve the powerplay significantly, and he put up good point totals for a defenseman with limited playing time.  A team that is otherwise good defensively, and has a good goaltender, but could otherwise not score overlooks the deficiencies in his game.

If I had to guess, I think part of DeBoer is doing is to see if the powerplay can work well enough without Gelinas.  If that's the case, I think Larsson probably gets subbed in for Gelinas after the team's first loss.

He hasn't been great defensively, BUT....

Larsson has 3 G, 27 A in 128 games for a minus 4.

In only 63 games, Gelinas has 7 G, 24 A and a minus 2.

Obviously, you want to have great defense. But if you can get offensive production like Gelinas offers, that's a good thing too.

Larsson offers mediocre defense and barely any offense. Plus for a guy 6'3" and 205 lbs, he doesn't play with any physicality at all.

i was thinking about that even further after i posted it lol... i guess they wouldnt have a choice but to toss him in there and i dont even mean to sound like that would be such a bad thing..but what i was more so trying to get at is they are keeping sal in there for his veteran old timer presence i think more than anything.

Larsson plays when a veteran goes down, whenever that may be.

I just hope he shows enough during that stint to hold a spot on the roster.

Who sits if that happens though? Severson? Gelinas? It's certainly not going to be the case that Salvador is a healthy scratch for an extended period of time. At least I don't think that would be likely given the inexperience of the rest of the defense on the PK.

Definitely Gelinas, only because his D-zone play is still pretty questionable.

Thing is Gelinas is a guy who can change the game in one shot or play.

There's of course a fair point that he's not great in our zone and could cost us a goal too. But as much as it's fair to take into consideration, even the best dman in the league can fvck up and next thing you know the puck is in the back of the net. While not any dman can rip a one timer or get the puck to the net like Gelinas, Salvador certainly can't.

But again i will always tend to focus and put more into what guys can do that others can't offensively cause you NEED to make it happen to score and you if don't score even if you play a perfect game, you're gonna lose. If you're not having a good game defensively, you can always rely on your goalie and other guys to back you up.

That's all just an opinion and you guys don't have to agree

what am I not seeing? if a vet goes down with an injury and larsson replaces the injured vet, why does a youngster need to come out?

Defense wins championships, not the occasion slap shot.

Which is why Stevens changed his game when he came to NJ, he was an offensive force who realized he needed to focus on "D" to win...

93-94 was probably his best offensive season and he was a ridiculous +53. The Devils also won a ton that year. His point production slipped after that year. Too long ago that I can't remember whether his power play time slipped. It might also have something to do with Nieds coming into his own and taking over Stevens' role as the offensive defenseman. Regardless I don't think his commitment to defense was ever an issue.
