  1. More of a tweak to the current system than a full overhaul IMO - shocking that it happened this late in the season. It's still a strong side overload w/ a ton of pressure applied. Difference is they finally told the D men to park their asses in front of the net. Previously we had the D applying pressure, not just in the corners but also on zone entry. This lead to the D getting dragged out of position (though arguably in position per the system) and caught chasing pucks, leaving gaping holes in front of the net. In theory it was on our forwards to collapse and clog lanes/take assignments then peel out for quick transitions but we saw how well that was working. While we're still overloading w/ pressure, the onus is now on our skill forwards to use their speed down law to cause turnovers and transition puck while the D stay glued to the slot. When the player(s) applying pressure get beat, they have the slot coverage as a safety net. I see the downsides to this system update being increased injury potential (do we really want Jack and Nico battling for pucks in D-zone corners), and fewer options on the breakout. The thought behind the previous configuration was to have D create turnovers through pressure low and look up-ice to a Hughes type player - that's going to be less common now.
  2. Huge game standings wise - winner takes the WC #2 spot NJ takes the position with a win; points will be tied but NJ has more regulation wins With a Caps (regulation) win, they stay in the WC #2 spot and have 4 points on NJ
  3. Great point - I think it works the other way as well. Fitz has an analytical hockey mind and is interested not just in team building, but the X's and O's of the game as well. Remember that he wanted to be a coach before he naturally gravitated to the GM path. Fitz was impressed with Lindy's ability to shape young players going as far back as the Panthers days in the 90's, which was a driving force behind bringing him in as coach. Fitz brought in Lindy as his guy to fill a perceived need, and the duo work together collaborating on things like lineups and systems/strategy play within that lineup. Given the above it's easy to see how Fitz has a lot of patience with Lindy. In admitting Lindy isn't the guy for the job, Fitz has to admit the same of himself, as they work so closely together. Much easier to blame it on goaltending, injuries, or even puck luck, than to admit that their shared vision just isn't panning out. To be clear I'm talking purely about the coaching role, which I think (and interviews have supported) Fitz has made himself part of. To me the solution moving forward is for Fitz to step back from day to day decisions and be the great GM he's proven himself as, letting Lindy sink or swim on his own accord as the coach. After that make a decision objectively based on the numbers.
  4. Case in point: https://moneypuck.com/goalies.htm Goals Saved Above Expected Per 60 Schmid: .593 BW: .304 VV: .012 Save % Above Expected Schmid: .012 BW: .005 VV: .000 GAA Better Than Expected Schmid: .059 BW: .031 VV: .001 Wins Above Replacement Schmid: 1.30 BW: .077 VV: .008
  5. He's almost been too good, to the point where you'd think he has to come back down to earth. 5th best Save% and 2nd best GAA in the league among goalies with 15+ games played. The advanced stats are right up there too. VV has done everything we could've asked coming into the season. Advanced stats are burying him but eye test and traditional stats say he's a legit NHL caliber starter, towards the top half of the league when he's hot. That said, Schmid may be elite level and definitely deserves the looks heading into the playoffs.
  6. Good point, there's an upper level to his game which rivals the top-flight goalies in the league. At their best, Vezina caliber goalies like Ulmark and Sorokin have 97.1% and 97.6% save percentages respectively in their top 15 games. VV is on that doorstep with a 95.4%. Going to 30 games it's still tight with Ulmark: .950 | Sorokin .953 | VV .930 Consistency is where Ulmark separates himself from the pack, see their worst 15 games: Ulmark: .910 | Sorokin: .870 | VV: .847 _____ Advanced stats or even the traditional SV% / GAA say VV is bang on average in the league - a massive upgrade over what we had last year and an accomplishment in it's own right. But I'd agree that the eye test and a breakdown of the stats put him higher than that. Schmid has also been excellent in his starts, averaging 92.9% in his full game efforts and a 93% overall. It's a small sample size, and his AHL numbers are concerning, but if he can continue his development it's a great 1A 1B tandem - neither being truly elite but both being more than competent to backstop a playoff bound team.
  7. Big ups to Vanecek coming in to right the ship amid a lot of question marks heading in to the season - towards the top half of the league to boot.
  8. https://moneypuck.com/goalies.htm Among goalies with 15+ games played he is: 15th in Goals Saved Above Expected 23rd in GSAEx60 19th in Save Percentage Above Expected 23rd in Goals Against Average Better Than Expected 15th in Wins Above Replacement He's been solid but I think our bar has been lowered after the past years of goaltending hell.
  9. Arbitrary and non-sensical. For starters, proof of recovery from covid or a negative covid test should be as valid as the vaccine card. That being said, everyone should be required to wear the mask anyway. Breakthrough cases aren't rare and it's well documented that vaccinated individuals can catch and transmit covid. This is why negative test is the only way to enter the US through air. Realistic policy: If you're vaccinated, recently recovered or testing negative, come to the arena and wear a mask. If you're not in that cohort stay home.
  10. Kovy-Zajac-Shane Doan Elias-Henrique-Zubrus Wojtek Wolski-Josefson-Clarkson Carter-Gionta-Bernier Possible?
  11. Thats a real backwards way of thinking if you ask me. Making the cap floor or not Marty's simply noy worth 4.5 million a year now, it will be even worse next year, If someone gave me 5 bucks to buy candy and I HAD to spend it to reach the candy spending floor I wouldnt just overpay for a Hershey bar and call it quits, Id spend the 5 bucks in the most effective way possible to get value for my 5 bucks Silly analogy, but all this talk of spending a little extra to reach the floor is foolish when you can get extra players with that money
  12. Waaay to much money and time, absolutely insane deal if you ask me. Is nobody else pissed at Marty? I haven't seen that opinion offered yet. If he really did live for this team and was so loyal then he would have taken a reasonable contract for what he was actually worth instead of getting money hungry when the team is in financial ruin. Honestly if it weren't Marty, a 40 year old goalie with his current level of play would be hard pressed to get 2.5 million a year, especially for a 2 year deal. I think a one year 3 million dollar contract would be well beyond fair for Brodeur, and would imagine that's what he was being offered at first. Hell, I'd rather have Michael Leighton at 900k a year for 2 years than Marty for 2 years @ 4.5m per year. They are both goalies that can get hot but generally aren't up to par and let in major softies. Yes I respect everything hes done but he isn't doing them anymore and a 2 year deal weighs this team down further when his play hasn't warranted it.
  13. I see from looking at these posts that I'm in the deep minority, but I honestly don't want Parise back. I don't think he is work 8 million now, but more importantly 7 years down the line there is no way I see him being worth that much. It has been discussed that his play is largely based on hustle and I think we will see a sharp decline outside of the 5 year mark in his level of play. I would rather have the 8 million+ in space in the next few years to lock up Henrique and Larsson then pick up a few defenceman and depth players. Plus we could sign a few mid level FA's in the next 2 seasons as a stop gap while players develop and remain equally competitive.

Same, I entered the lottery also. I would be willing to pay someone trustworthy before hand with paypal if they could pull 2 tickets. Really desperate.
  15. Going to be an incredible game 6. Rangers obviously will be bitter and hungry also, hope we can match that intensity
