****************UPDATE 4/27/2011***************

Hey everyone,

So I brought the idea up in the "Can hockey fans skate" thread of actually getting our njdevs community together for some recreational roller hockey, and I figured this would be more appropriate for people to chime in their opinions. A few people had mentioned they would be interested, but come spring time if we have a lot of people we can put this into action and have some fun.

I suggested roller hockey because roller rinks are generally public and first come first serve unless there is a recreational league game going on, but those generally are played in the evenings.

There's a few rinks that I know of.

1. Manalapan township park has two rinks, in two separate parts of the park in which i played there a few times early Saturday morning around 9am and no one is there.

MANALAPAN RECREATION CENTER

Route 522 93.5 acres 2 handball courts, 3 softball/baseball fields, fitness trail, 6 football/soccer fields, 2 street hockey courts, 2 tot lots, 6 basketball courts, 6 tennis courts, 2 bocce courts, 2 sand volleyball courts, a 9 hole disc golf course, concession stand, 2 picnic areas, 2 maintenance buildings, shelter building, headquarters building

2. Back in high school, i played in the Somerville rec league and we played at Milltown Road, which is right off Route 22, in Somerville/Bridgewater.

3. Branchburg, old Town park. This one is a stretch because it's probably not near anyone but it's a court that I know of..

Again, this is welcome for everyone and I can definitely tell you I'm not that great even though I played in high school. haha. I would suggest that if you wanna play have some basic equipment like rollerblades, stick, and gloves. I use shin/knee pads too because a shot off the leg one time hurt like a mother.

I will also suggest playing with a ball instead of a puck to reduce risk of injury since we all won't have full gear and if people want to take slap shots.. but it's up to you guys. Goalies seemed to be a rare commodity when I was younger so let us know if you plan on playing AND you're a goalie person or have access to goalie equipment.. it's more fun than playing hit the post. . . I don't mind jumping in someone's pads since i have my own helmet with cage.

I think that's it for now.. but let me know what you guys think!

Other rinks in the area include Fords Park in Fords/Woodbridge - Route 9 south, right by the Turnpike and Parkway, and Avenel/Woodbridge, off of Blair Road. I know CRASHER plays often up in Morristown and Short Hills as well. I'm actually considering finally buying a pair of inline skates, so if there's games going on I'd like to try and get involved, get back in shape, etc. I'm not very good, but I'll give it a shot if there's anything not too far away.

I am def. down! I would love to play at the Manalapan rink as its only 5 minutes from my house! But there are rinks Freehold, Monroe (right near Old Bridge and really nice one). I've played at the Rutgers one too it's nice. And i could def. get a couple more Devil fans friends to play, some of whom are goalies!

It also doesn't really matter where as long as it's withing 45 minutes of me (i live in central jersey), let's just get this going!

Woo!

Thanks for input everyone, I will try and map out where everyone is from and find the most convenient rinks for people to come out and look into the rinks you all mentioned. Once the weather gets a lil warmer and snow disappears we can decide our first meet and hopefully continue this once or twice a month. If we wanna play on a consistent basis, I wouldn't mind doing the indoor rental rink once in awhile like Blown suggested.

I'm looking forward to this! For those who don't want to play and come join anyways, maybe we can do a BBQ social too. Anyways just continue to throw ideas out there, and can't wait to play!

I'd definitely be interested! I just got a brand new pair of skates and haven't played yet because of all the snow. Haven't played since probably October. I live in Brick, but I wouldn't mind going up to New Brunswick. I know a couple other Devils fans up there that play and I'm sure they would be down as well.

I am down for this. I would prefer we get together at the Rutgers rink. It's a nice surface and is easy to get to for me and seemingly many here.

Not necessarily for this, but does anyone happen to know if there's a rink in Hoboken?

One of my friends went to Stevens and when I went to hang out with him we'd play at an outdoor rink a few blocks away. Last I heard about it was they were resurfacing it and I have no idea if that got done or if the rink is even still there now.
