So if is still a thought to be true I'd say lets pick him. Should be great with kovy and loki Behind D, I think Center is the least needed position. Look at what we have as of now: Zajac (signed longterm) Henrique (I think he should be a winger, but the Devils seem insistent on him as a pivot) Loktionov (young, solid player who can eat up weak competition) Josefson (a perfect 3rd line center) Of course you take the BPA, but this team is in serious need of a legit winger

Why not him? His first taste on the nylon level at wing. Him being a center somewhere else compared to the nhl is significantly different right? Can happen. It's just a thought. What hit it for me is tge Crosby comparison.

That comparison is a couple of years old, though. He is being outperformed by his teammate, Jonathan Drouin. Unless you're telling me Drouin is gonna be Lemieux
Muevelos
whatever makes us better agree. Whichever out of the top them is good alongside kovy. Given he pans out. Maybe nish or barkov. Drouin sounds like a pokemon to. Wouls be a fun jersey to own. But really would nish be our best bet for a foward?

I know it was only a handful of games, but Loktionov and Kovalchuk looked pretty good together. Lokti is a craft playmaker who has soft hands. Nichuskin- You'd have to wait at least 2 years since he signed a 3 year deal with his KHL team last summer. But everyone is saying he'd be worth the wait. He is a 6'4 power forward who has Rick Nash potential. If he drops to 8 or wherever we pick, I think you take him 10 out of 10 times

RizzMB30
I remembered how we seem to like to draft Swede players in the first round, and looked Elias Lindholm up and found some video of him at the 2013 WJC. Some pretty good footage of him. I really liked what I saw. He throws the body, he is a crafty playmaker, and he goes to the net as well as a good forechecker, he forces a lot of turnovers defensively. Yes, he's a center, but from this video, the way he plays it seems like he can play anywhere. He's mocked to go top 10...Video made me drool a little bit. nessus
I know I've said this before but I've been hoping for Lindholm to end up a Devil since the beginning of the season. His game is much different from some of the other Swedes that we have drafted, which is worth mentioning because some people assume that many Swedes play with a similar style. The kid plays an all around game, with a lot of talent and grit. Granted his talent potential is probably not on the same level as Drouin or MacKinnon, it'll still help this team sooner than later. In my opinion, a great fit for New Jersey. And yeah, he can play wing. If he drops to our spot in the draft, it'll be a miracle. I kind of think he will be going top 5 unless the teams ahead of NJ are looking for D talent as a priority. Who knows, maybe we'll get lucky like Washington (and indirectly Nashville) did with Filip Forsberg.

It's more of a risk I mean, assuming we do anything this offseason as far as signing a forward, do you really think we'd be sticking this guy in the lineup right away? What's 2 more years? Probably less than the average wait to develop an NJ prospect, right? Edited April 17, 2013 by ATLL765

Brodeur retires... we could finish in the bottom and have to give up our top pick... This new guy refusing to come to a terrible team so we waste 2 top pick and looking at a projected 3rd line winger as our last first round pick. Elias nearing the end of his career (maybe even not playing in NJ by then) i mean... if im Lou im doing everything i can to minimize any kind of risk for the next few years. It took enough risk and we might pay pretty hard for them already

It took enough risk and we might pay pretty hard for them already I'm pretty sure they interview these guys first. I'd bet Lou would have an idea as to what he wants. Also, if we finish 30th next year, I'll be beyond surprised and I don't think anyone could blame Lou for having to give up that pick. It's clear Lou sees a pick today as better than a pick tomorrow, even if the pick is higher tomorrow. It's a fine line of thought and if that's what he's decided, so be it. Sterio, go look at the roster for next year and tell me we won't take risks. We have what, like 3 guys signed through next year for our forwards. Zajac, Kovy, I'd name another, but I can't get capgeek to load right now for some reason. If we don't take risks, we'll end up with a short roster next year again. I hope Larsson develops into one of our top d-man. I know it is early and he is very young, but he is not looking like a worthwhile Top 5 pick..... nessus
Can someone explain to me the logic behind "a pick today is better than a pick tomorrow"? I simply don't understand.
Derlique
Can someone explain to me the logic behind "a pick today is better than a pick tomorrow"? I simply don't understand. Matteau will be 2 years older than any prospect picked in 2014. He has already contributed (albeit a small amount) and will continue to improve to the point where he should be a regular by 2014-2015. This means he will help NJ sooner rather than later and it will give NJ the luxury of having more young forwards rather than start from scratch
nessus
Really? Hmm, so addressing needs now when they can be addressed in the following 2 years, likely more efficiently, is more important? I guess I understand that, but you can't get much higher up than 29th overall.

There is on draft day, but there isn't in 5 years. The risk is obviously that NJ wouldn't get back to that level and would have to give up a lottery pick, but I still don't think we'll see that unless the goaltending issues aren't addressed. Skinner, Burmistrov or Granlund in 2010 over Daultan Leveille at 29 in 2008... i mean come onnnn Edited April 18, 2013 by SterioDesign

The 29th pick is not set in stone - it represents a range of possible picks, some of which will turn out well, some which won't - nor is it set in stone that the Devils will be picking between 8th and 12th next year. njdevsftw
Can the Devils take the NHL to court over the draft pick penalty and tie it up for a few years? This! I think the whole thing seems extremely unreasonable. The NHL agreed to contract regulations they dislike themselves. Sucks for them. Now they fixed it. Good job. Why on earth should the Devils be singled out and penalized for it?
Devils731
Why take Mike Green in 2004 at 29, when you can wait and take Riku Helenius, Ty Wishart, Mark Mitera, David Fischer, Bobby Sandguinetti, Dennis Persson, Leland Irving, or Ivan Vishnevsky with an earlier pick in 2006!?!?! Of course, in 2004 you could have had AJ Thelen on defense at 12th overall...but obviously nobody made that pick because it's stupid to pick a worse player earlier in a draft.
