What is Stevens worth?

With our team already over the cap and dollars tight, what do you think is a fair amount for Lou to offer Stevens, assuming he can come back?

Maybe Larry can make him a player / assistant coach, pay him $4M and budget it for coaching, not players (sounds like I worked for enron or WorldCom, doesn't it???)...

I want to know what the "drop-dead date" (excuse the term) is for this Stevens fiasco. I just want to know either way and move on with my life. I figure we have to know at least prior to training camp (ca. 9/15) and maybe as early as September 1.

The other question is, how many guys do we have to lose before October 1st, ESPECIALLY if we're adding Stevens.

What's the rule again that allows bonuses that don't count against the cap if a player was injured last season and missed a certain number of games? Might that apply to Stevens this season if he returns? That would allow Lou to use him at the league minimum with a bunch of bonuses that don't count.

I just don't remember the specifics of the rule and of how long Scott was out.

I think this is the rule that applies to Stevens

PERFORMANCE BONUSES

What players may earn in performance bonuses?

Performance bonuses will only be permissible for the following types of players: (1) players on entry-level contracts; (2) players signing one-year contracts after returning from long-term injuries (players with 400 or more games who spent 100 or more days on injured reserve in the last year of their most recent contract); and senior veteran players who sign a one-year contract after the age of 35.

So Lou can give him an entry level contract with performance bonuses.

sure, but the max he could get with bonuses is what goes against the cap

Are you sure about that? I haven't seen it say for sure one way or the other. But it seems to me that if you're going to make it that restrictive to qualify for bonuses, its because there is some benefit to the team. Why would I waste cap space on an old guy or an injury case otherwise?

I think there's more to this.

I'm getting quite tired of this too, it was a fiasco in 2004 with the will he or won't he play and it's becoming a bit of a fiasco again. Either take a dump or get off the pot already :P

(I know, I know he probably can't say whether he's coming back or not yet because of the whole cap thing but geez this IS getting old)

Signing an eligible player to performance bonusses isn't all that simple. The CBA has a provision for a team to exceed the cap by as much 7.5% for performance bonusses. That means they could go as high as 41,925,000 towards their cap this year if Stevens were to meet his requirements for the bonusses. However, whatever amount the Devils exceeded the cap by this year, would be charged to next year's cap. So if they take full advantage of this provision for this year, they'll only have 36,075,000 in cap space for next year. If Stevens doesn't meet his requirements for the bonusses, then they wouldn't be able to take advantage of the provision at all.

That allows you to get a guy on the payroll for one year when you might not be able to do so otherwise, but there's certainly a price to pay for it. Unless, the Devils know they are dumping a lot of salary next year, using this provision could come back to bite them.

Toronto is doing this with Allison, but it looks like they are allowing for his bonus money to count against this year's cap. They are keeping their cap figure around 36 million, so they don't have to worry about it going forward.
