2012-13 Prospect Thread

Hockey Prospectus just released their Top 10 Prospect list for the Devils. I've been looking forward to this since Corey Pronman uses his own valuation of possession and other skill sets to rank his prospects, thus his list often differs greatly from the general media. A couple of things that stood out to me immediately:

1. Gelinas ranked 2nd. He had a huge 2nd half for Albany last year and clearly Pronman likes what he/other scouts he corresponds with saw.

2. Gavrus ranked 6th. I didn't expect to see him this high, if at all in the top 10. Given his injury history and the fact he may have just left the OHL makes me question ranking him this high over prospects like Pietila, Boucher, or Coleman.

I highly suggest checking out the full article. Its nice break from the lock out articles.

Random note:

2 time Devils prospect camp invitee J.T. Barnett suffered a knee injury in his first game with Kelowna. I figure he may be a guy to keep an eye on to see if he gets an AHL try out down the road.

What I find interesting is that Urbom's offensive skill is often criticized. While he has not had much of a chance to prove himself at the NHL level, both of his goals were very impressive. I guess I would have to watch more AHL games, but his offensive decision making seemed to be very appropriate in the (NJ) Devils games I've seen.

Yeah, I like his goals too, but you have to admit that shots from the slot aren't likely to be a defenseman's bread and butter when it comes to offense.

I'm really interested in Kerfoot now, he seems to be doing pretty well. Anyone know how meaningful it is if a player puts up good numbers (like Kerfoot has in the last few games) in the BCHL?

Not very, unfortunately. Kerfoot should be crushing that league if he hopes to become a successful pro. Some guys who do really well there don't even become pros or successful NCAA players.

"Jon Merrill was woozy after getting hit into the boards. Almost wobbled over. Scary looking"

https://twitter.com/...852439171919873

"Sounds like Michigan defenseman Jon Merrill was injured in tonight’s exhibition. No word on the extent of the injury."

Here's the highlight video from Boucher's game in which he scored in regulation and in the 6th rd of the shoot out for Sarnia on Monday. Boucher's goal is around 1:48 (announcer mistakenly says Galchenyuk scores). His shoot out goal is around 3:23.

Gelinas got a good one right in the kisser lol

per TG

Albany Devils D Eric Gelinas is out indefinitely after being struck in the chin with a puck in a preseason game Saturday in Binghamton.

Albany GM Chris Lamoriello said Gelinas had a fracture to his jaw and underwent a "minor procedure" to align and brace his teeth.

Gelinas did not lose any teeth -yet. Jaw alignment was fine. But it will be at least 2 weeks before he practices.

oh great and now Merill broke something in his neck too per TG

I feel bad for Merrill, everything after his freshman year was has been a disaster. Hopefully he recovers fully in 6 weeks.

Sucks that Gelinas is going to miss time to and they don't have an exact time table. I was looking forward to seeing if he would carry over his strong 2nd half from last year. At least Albany has plenty of defensemen.

He played well when he came back last year, and it didn't appear to have an effect on how he was perceived by the talking heads, so I wouldn't call that a disaster.

This injury is frightening though.
