Scouting the Devils

I see a lot of doom and gloom here, re: the Devils chances versus the 'Canes. So I thought this was interesting - figured you guys might appreciate it. This person posts a lot of great statistics and it's actually pretty encouraging, as a Devils fan, to see it all on the page before me.

http://www.canescountry.com/2009/4/13/8322...canes-vs-devils

Here's a snippet from it:

* New Jersey and Carolina rank first and second, respectively, in winning one-goal games. The Devils finished 25-5-4 (.735) while the Canes were 24-8-7 (.615). New Jersey was also tied for the league lead in three-goal wins (18).

* The Devils have a league-best .694 winning percentage when outshooting their opponent (34-15-0) while Carolina ranked 16th (27-20-5, .519). On the flip side, Carolina has a 17-9-2 record (.607, 5th) when outshot, and New Jersey was 11th (16-11-3, .533).

* New Jersey won .951 of the games they led after two periods, second to only Anaheim. Carolina won the third-most games when trailing after two (8-21-3, .250). The Devils also went 37-5-2 (.841) of the games in which they scored first, best in the league. Carolina was third in winning games in which they allowed the first goal (20-20-3, .465).

* As we've documented before, the Canes are the league's least penalized team, spending just 9.8 minutes in the box per game. New Jersey ranks ninth with 12.9 PIMs per game. Part of that can be attributed to a difference in major (see fighting) penalites. Carolina had just 26 (second-fewest in the NHL), less than half of New Jersey's total (58, T-22nd). That could even things out since fighting is always down in the playoffs.

* Carolina and New Jersey each won 51.3 percent of their faceoffs this season (T-eighth).

Assessment: The Devils are at their best when they get ahead

So much of this series is going to come down to special teams. If Frankenmoron and others insist on taking senseless penalties, bye-bye Devs...the 'Canes PP unit will eat them alive...I'm thinking to the tune of 30-35% for the series.

Eric, were you wearing a dress shirt under your #20 Devils jersey at the 4/11 game? I wanted to say hi, but wasn't 100% sure it was you.. I said hi to CJ though, which was cool.. I love our corner of the arena..

Anyway, game 1 is always very important.. I mean every win is big, but you really want to show up and put the other team on their heals.. I think if the Devils come out battling as hard as they did the weekend they beat Boston and San Jose (maybe not even that hard), then the series will be theirs.. It's when the Devils sort of go into cruise mode that they play poorly and fall behind in the game.. I notice at games how sometimes they are going all out for the puck and making smart plays, and then other games they look like a different team.. They make stupid plays and rack up penalties (their fault or the ref's) and like Eric said they will get killed by Carolina's PP

What's the most important pitch of an at-bat in baseball? The first. Why? Sets the tone for the at-bat. Let's hope the Devils throw a first pitch strike. :giggle:

While I'd like to see the Devils win both games at home (and both games on the road!), I think the way tomorrow night goes is especially important. I want to see classic Devils hockey where we grind the enemy down to fine paste, not a game where we eke out a win. We need to assert our superiority from the first minute to the last in the game.

We need to score first and often. I think if we can get a 2-0 lead in any of the games we'll win that game.

That's what the stats seem to suggest. The 'Canes are good at mustering comebacks, so we have to make sure that once we score, we stay on the attack.

No, that's Steve...he's the STH. We call him "1st round draft pick" because he always wears his dress shirt underneath his jersey.

I'll be there on Friday...I wanted to go tomorrow but my bro's in town with the kids (he lives in London, though he's coming back for good soon), so I'm DVRing that one.

babrooks...against the 'Canes I'll take "eeking out a win" in a heartbeat. This team isn't going to have much of a margin for error against that team. It's like I said...I really do think we're going to know pretty quickly how well (or not-so-well) the Devils will stack up against the 'Canes. If the Devils start taking low-percentage shots just to puff up the shot total, while the 'Canes get quality scoring opportunity after scoring opportunity, then this will be '06 all over again.

They need to start out with ZZPop. Those guys need to set the tone with an aggressive forecheck. I'd like to score in the first 5 minutes like we were a couple months ago. Then we can't ease off for a second.

If you are referring to Bobby Holik, and his playoff behavior in past years is any indication, he has played 121 playoff games with the Devils, and booked 105 PIM. the most was the 37 PIM in the 2001 Cup run, which took 20 games and included the Toronto series.

And took the penalty in game 5 of the 2002 series that sent the game into OT.

Its kinda weird, in 2002 and 2006, the Canes went with a different goalie in the playoffs than the regular season. Go figure.
