Gambling/AC

Being 22, the "thing" for everyone's birthday seems to be go down to AC and make some real good bad decisions. Prior to the last year I had never really gambled before at all but every time I go down I set a couple bucks aside to gamble. Anyone here frequent casinos? What games are your favorite? Is Blackjack really your best chance to win? And what seems to be the age old question is, do you take a hit a 16?

I'm not an expert but I would assume your best chance to win is to play on red or black in roulette, you have just under a 50% shot.  I've only been to casinos three or four times.  I've played blackjack four times and came out ahead twice, and I think I played roulette twice and lost both times.  A few years ago two of my buddies and I went to the ECAC semifinals and championship in Atlantic City, and we gambled for maybe an hour before heading into one of the games and all three of us won money, two of us won more than the trip cost us.  Last time I gambled I lost $200 in less than an hour though.

I think no matter what you play, the odds are against you so just keep in mind that as you continue to sit there and gamble, your winnings will probably normalize towards your actual odds of success, which are never in your favor, so if you start to get ahead, get up and walk away before you end up losing what you've won.

I've read that you should hit on 16 when the dealer is showing 7 or higher.

The poker room is one of the only places to win money long term.  It's one of the few places in the casino where the casino makes money whether you win or lose, so they just want everyone to keep playing, who wins is irrelevant.  At the slots and the table games the casino actively needs you to lose and so only plays games where the house has an edge.

Oh, as for hitting on 16 at blackjack, we really don't have enough information here but the general rule of thumb is you hit if the dealer is showing a 7 or higher and stay if the dealer is showing a 6 or lower.

You're still going to lose 90+% of the time when you have a 16, but you get a few % back in your favor if you're following the basic rule.
