Comprehensive Free Agent Signing Thread

Not so sure about "massive", but as it stands now the Devs will have some cap flexibility this year, and it would be consistent with Lou's track record to play the kids and thn fill in the holes at the deadline (he might even have the assets (i.e., cheap, NHL-ready prospects) to do something this year) -- I agree with that approach so long as the new deals we'd pick up expire at the end of this coming season.

Well they'll have X amount of cap room at the start of the season and it'll grow as the season goes on and grow quickly since they'll be starting with a lot of daily room, if no other moves are made.

If they open at around $51M (which will probably be around where it is), that's $5-6M of cap at the opening of the season. Around the deadline, I don't know the %, but you would be able to put on alot. say a quarter of the cap hit remains, that would be $20-24M in yearly salary able to be picked up. Dunno if you could even do that if you tried.

Of course, it would have to be all expiring contracts.

With Clarkson getting more ice time in mind:

Parise-Zajac-Langenbrunner

Elias-Rolston-Clarkson

Shanahan-Zubrus-Bergfors

Pandolfo-Pelley-Leblond

Extra: Halischuk

Martin-Oduya

White-Mottau

Salvador-Corrente

Extra: Greene

Brodeur

whoever

I don't hate that. That fourth line lacks an identity, but all in all it isn't terrible and only requires the re-signing of Zajac (which is 100% expected) and Shanahan (which should be easy/inexpensive).

Edit: Also note that the only time Rolston ever had any kind of extended stretch of productivity last season was when he was on that third line with Clarkson.

That forward line-up isn't going to get us anywhere from Rolston on down, Corrente is nowhere near ready either. If this is the lineup we're saddled with it's another example that Lou has lost it.

Further to the discussion earlier:

"The lure of easy money is certainly attractive to the players, and it seems to be something that owners sign off on as easily as a ticket price hike, but there's a downside, and it seems to be at the expense of the second-, third- and even fourth-line players, the ones who can help a team win, but don't share in the glory or wealth of their more expensive brothers. Take for instance the case of Dominic Moore. The young center, arguably a journeyman in the finest sense of the word, was having a decent season for also-ran Toronto when he started looking for a new deal in the $2 million-per range. The Maple Leafs, who thought his success came largely from playing on the No.1 line despite his not having No.1 centerman skills, declined and shipped him to Buffalo, another playoff also-ran, for a draft choice at the trade deadline. Moore hasn't had much luck getting a deal from the Sabres even though they gave up a second-round pick to get him. He's also not having much luck on the free-agent market, at least not after the first day-and-a-half. An unrestricted free agent who made $900,000 last year, Moore is, at the moment at least, out of a job. It's a similar situation for Manny Malhotra, who had a decent season for Columbus, a franchise that just made the playoffs for the first time in its history. Malhotra, looking to move from $1.5 to $2 million per, has received little more than the proverbial cold shoulder from the Blue Jackets, who on Wednesday signed free-agent forward Sami Pahlsson, a career checking center, away from division rival Chicago for $2.65 million per season over three years, a salary that's likely to make the Malhotra camp wince. If there's a constant, it's that good players command great salaries even in the toughest times. Nothing wrong with that, but in a salary-capped system, it's not just simply a case of adding more money to the payroll. There's a squeeze on, and players like Malhotra, Moore and a slew of others are beginning to feel it. Their options are to take less than they think they are worth (in many cases they are not worth what they think), jump to a shrinking number of teams in Europe, or perhaps play in the AHL which, thanks to the NHL cap, is paying less for real talent than at any time in the last two decades."

From TheFourthPeriod on Twitter (http://twitter.com/TheFourthPeriod) -

"You can add NJ & NYR to the list of teams hot for Saku Koivu. No timeline for decision, but Saks wants 3-to-4yrs. MIN & ANA still in mix"

what do people honestly think of this? if NJ get him, a bit of hope for the 09-10 season?

Ill support the Devils regardless, and anything can happen in a season, even if we dont sign him..

but i kinda like the idea personally..

Lou has cash, drive the cost up for Koivu as Lou will make many a team look silly a year from now. Koivu is a nice player but not worth the money and years.

We'll see.

I'd be somewhat happy if Lou can get koivu cheap.

He just received an offer from the Minnesota Wilds

http://www.rds.ca/canadien/chroniques/277618.html

Its in french but it say that Koivu received an offer from the Wild and that they are waiting for and answer

I also heard that Koivu received an offer from an Eastern conference team but he won't reveal which team

If we can sign him i would really be happy...he always produced even in the hardest spot of the nhl:Captain of

the Montreal Canadien...and i also think that he wasn't really with a team that can take the Max out of him

you've got to think people around the league saw what happened in baseball and are trying to copy it. i mean, the devils don't have a forward signed for under 2.5 million right now who isn't a rookie - that kind of thinking has to change.

titans that third line is fine, but whatever. zubrus is the worst player in the world! and so forth.

Amen to Zubrus being the worst player. He has been very big Lou bust.

all things are possible, but the devils are really in cap trouble for that year. people are talking about 2010-11, but what if there is no respite from the bad economy in 2011-12 and the salary cap is still down around 50-53 million dollars? the devils have 29 million committed to 8 players, none of whom are parise or martin or zajac. throw those guys in, and we've got at least 44 million to 11 players.

When Bob Gainey is the GM of an NHL team, there's always a way Tri.

Hilarious rumor from TFP forums posted on Gulitti's blog comments:

"A source from a reliable Russian newspaper is confirming that Pavel Bure and Alexander Mogiliny have recently met, and might have plans to return to the Nhl- with their primary destination being New Jersey. They also are willing to part with minimum contracts, stating all they want is the cup. "

-TFP forums

That's the most entertaining thing I've read all week.
