Marty not planning on coming back anytime soon with GM change.

“Especially with the change (the Devils) made, I think it's a great opportunity for me to take a step back and go somewhere – or stay somewhere – that I'll be able to learn and do things I want to do and try to learn as much as possible and who knows what the future,” the former Devils goaltender told northjersey, com today. “But, it's less and less likely it's going to happen in New Jersey for a few years, that's for sure.”

As much as I loved him as a player, I'm kinda glad that he's not looking to rush back to our management team. Legendary players switching to management on the teams they made their name tend to have too much slack given them and are not always that successful. If he's truly interested in specifically becoming GM of the Devils, I'd rather he take the Ron Hextall route and pay his dues elsewhere first.

Coudn't agree more. How did he handle his swan song, I will answer that, poorly.

Tom Gulitti ‏@TGfireandice:

Fire & Ice blog: Patrik Elias would understand if new GM Ray Shero wants to move him, but would be happy to stay: http://fireandice.northjersey.com/fi...stay-1.1337300

Honestly I think the only way Shero would trade Elias is at the deadline. Or if Patty asks. I don't think one of Shero's first moves should be trading the oldest Devils on the team in both age and longevity. That would piss off too many people.

Lou might have gotten away with asking Patty to be traded but Shero can't.

Still, I don't see us being much better next year so I'd be willing to bet he's gone by the trade deadline.

I thought the dream scenario for all parties involved was going to be the Islanders wanting Elias this trade deadline. As much as it hurts to say, I still would've liked to see that trade happen, it would've made sense for everybody, and the Isles might still be in the playoffs (who knows?)....

After that ended up not happening, I don't think Elias gets traded this season, his value's too low and it's just not worth it for anyone, including us. Meanwhile, his presence on the team is invaluable in other aspects.

Elias is making 5.5, so if you traded him at the deadline and picked up half his salary, a team would need to have had $611k in cap space all year banking itself.  A team that had $2M for even a decent portion of the year would make it.  I don't think he will be difficult to move at the trade deadline next year.

So there has been some noise -- including from Columbus's beat writer -- about Kerby Rychel being on the block for defensive help. I don't think Columbus has much use for someone like Gelinas, so I imagine if there's some kind of deal to be made, it would involve Merrill, who I think it's still too early to give up on.

I still don't see much of a reason for Columbus to make a trade. They have Murray, Johnson, Tyutin and Savard, which is pretty good. They should also end up with an excellent defenseman in the draft. In the meantime, they could probably stand to overpay a little for a free agent defenseman so they don't have to part with a good prospect.

I like Rychel, but I think trading any of our NHL D would be a mistake. Even Merrill, who everyone seems to be low on right now, would be far too much to give up, in my opinion. I think Merrill can still turn into a very good NHL defenseman who can chip in offensively. It's hard to tell how well Rychel will turn out after only one AHL season.

Jeez , the more I think about it the longer I think this rebuild is going to take. Being generous, let's say NJ is ready to compete for a playoff spot in 2017-2018, so two more seasons after this. Current players under contract:

Mike Cammalleri- top 6 forward..... 35 years old

Adam Henrique- top 6 forward....27 years old

Ryane Clowe- guessing he's not in the picture

Andy Greene- 35 in Oct of 2017

Cory Schneider- 31

Safe to assume Cammalleri and Greene regress a bit- especially Cammy who is oft-injured. That's a top pairing LD we're going to have to find and ANOTHER top 6 forward we may have to upgrade

Edit: Forgot Zajac who will be a fine 3C, passable 2C

Some Shero quotes on Elias and some of our youth...

http://fireandice.northjersey.com/fire-ice-1.174987/shero-expects-elias-to-be-big-part-of-devils-next-year-updates-on-prospects-rfas-ufas-etc-1.1340083

Shero hasn't had that specific conversation with Elias yet, but wants him to remain a Devil

“We have chatted on the phone for a while,” Shero said. “I volunteered to come and see him when I found out he was in Hawaii. But, we're going to get together. With Patrik, out of respect for him and I've watched him play for a while, we have talked and I think we had a really good conversation on the phone. His agent knows me well and what I'm like, so I'm looking forward to sitting down and talking with him.

“That's something we'll (get to) next week on both, I think,” Shero said. “We have deadlines, obviously, and Ryan is one thing and Brodeur is another. I'm going to sit down with people and find out where they both are and what was ongoing and not ongoing. So, I'm getting up to speed on that as well and we'll see where that takes us. We'll see where we are. There's people that know those guys better than me, so I'll look for feedback.”

The plan is to sign Kujawinski. A decision still has to be made on Brodeur, though Lou Lamoriello did have some preliminary talks with his agent before stepping aside as GM and hiring Shero.

“With Brodeur, I'm getting caught up on that,” Shero said. “I really don't know where that stands. Kujawinski we'll sign, I'm sure. And Brodeur, nothing negative either way. I just don't have that information.”

Is it the same situation with the restricted free agents such as Adam Larsson and Eric Gelinas?

“Yeah, both of those guys are certainly important guys to the organization and I'll be in touch with J.P. Barry (Larsson's agent) and Gilles Lupien (Gelinas' agent) and I have exchanged calls already. They have rights where they are, but, hopefully, as we move along here something gets done with both of them. I'm looking forward to talking about of these kids and going from there. They're important people in this organization, so I'm looking forward to getting that and seeing what can get done on both.”

What's the latest with Blake Coleman and Blake Pietila, who both finished their college careers this spring and need to be signed by Aug. 15 or they become unrestricted free agents? It's my understanding there were contract talks with Coleman before you were hired.

“Both had good college careers. I think with both players there's a real good opportunity in this organization. That's, again, something I'm getting caught up on here. I have seen both players play and I'm hopeful of getting something done with both players. That will play itself out. They have rights as college kids and that stuff, but there's a good opportunity in this organization for kids like this. They were drafted by this team and developed by the university. I'm hopeful. We'll see where that's going to take us.”

While you were at the world championships, did you notice (2012 sixth-round pick) Artur Gavrus playing for Belarus (two goals, three assists in eight games)?

“Yes. Yes. I liked him. He was pretty good.”

Any chance you can bring him to North America next season? (He's played in the KHL the last two seasons with Minsk Dynamo)

“I don't know. I had seen him once before. I think he played a good role for the Belarus team. He's a young guy and we'll see where he is in his career, but (Belarus) did a pretty good job. They did a nice job with that team and for a younger guy he did a pretty good job for them. We'll see. He's certainly got some skill. He can skate. We'll see in terms of what's best for him. He's on our reserve list and from what I saw of him and talking to some of his coaches, he's not bad. At some point, I don't know if he comes to development camp (in July). He's certainly a guy we'll keep an eye on here.”

Is there an interest in signing 2014 first-round pick John Quenneville at this point or is that something you'll have to look at later because you have to catch up on him as well?

“I'm catching up with the scouts on him. He's certainly a good player that had another good playoff (10 goals, nine assists in 19 postseason games with Brandon). I certainly know where he was drafted. I think he's a kid who could be important to the organization as well. If he's not in New Jersey, he's playing back in junior next year. But, he's made progress in his career. I'll have to find out a little bit more about him in terms of a player contract. He had another good playoff for himself like he did the year before. All of these things are about developing and making the right decision. I'm really looking forward to the development camp to meet and see him and make the right decision in terms of when we sign him and go from there. Making the right decision and the timing will be important.”

Hopefully Coleman and Pietila can pull a Kreider and stick with the team right after college.

I have a feeling Matteau is our Kreider, the way he was playing with us the last few weeks of the season. He looked fast, tough, and dangerous.
