After clicking on the link, it's sad to see that some unappreciative idiots will never get over the seven games he played with the Blues, or the fact that he chose to stay on with the Blues' front office.  Hope they can get the fvck over it and enjoy the retirement ceremony.

It's gonna feel a little weird for Marty for sure...the Devil organization he remembers exists only in his memory bank.  Looking forward to seeing #30 and #26 make their way to the rafters.  I may not see another Devil jersey retirement in my lifetime after those two.

Aw, don't say that CR1976.  There's more to come my friend.

My comment to the article = As they should.  I can't wait to see #30 in the rafters where it belongs.  Like Lou, he was one of the few faces of this franchise.  I just wish that he accepted his role more towards the end because that's always been Lou's philosophy in terms of being a part of an orchestra.  Everyone wants to be the go-to guy and the best player, but there comes a time that a player has to accept that he's not a 1st violin seat anymore, and that he's more of a viola or bass player.  He could have remained a Devil for life and gotten more games as a backup in New Jersey than he would have with the Blues.  Should have handed the reigns over more willingly to Schneids and accepted the backup role gracefully, like Hasek maybe, but that's just my opinion.

To be fair, when he signed with the Blues he wasn't even offered a contract by the Devils at all.  Devils seemed to be set with Cory and Kinkaid as the pair.

Rizz, to be clear...not saying that the Devils are going to be bad forever...more saying that it may be a long time before we find guys who were as special and will be here as long as the five guys who will see their numbers up in the rafters. And I hope that honor isn't bestowed easily in the future...I'd hate to see the Devils become the Yankees in that regard. If the Devils were them, guys like Rafalski, Madden, and Langenbrunner might very well be candidates to have their numbers retired. I like that the guys who are up there really deserve it (some might debate Daneyko and Niedermayer, but I don't).

Who wouldn't be up for Mike Rupp night?

All of the number retirements have been Friday nights against non-rival opponents (Stevens = Carolina, Danyo = Boston, Nieds = Dallas).  I'd expect when its Marty's time that it'll follow the same script.

I agree. But, there's no way it should wait until next year. It should be done immediately.

Shero made it sound like it will, it's mainly about finding a night that works for Marty and his family. Although SH made a good point about the Devils wanting to price that game in the highest tier, they'll probably make up the difference in merchandise sales that night.

I think I'd like them to wait until next year. They've got a ton of promotions this upcoming year. And let the man rot in the ground a bit before they put his number up there. It feels too soon. I know it's all forgotten when it comes to that night, but the divorce is still pretty fresh. Too many hurt feelings. Too many of us still thankful that he's not still splitting time with Cory.

Divorce?  Geez, was it really that ugly?  Like several others, I thought Brodeur got too many legacy starts and "white knight" starts that final season (if Cory wasn't pissed at times that first season here, then he's about the most mellow guy on the planet), and I didn't always like the way Marty's quotes came off, but I never felt like it reached a bitter "divorce" scenario.  After Marty's final season, the Devils simply moved on, and Marty himself said that Schneider needed to be the man here in 2014-15.  Once he became a UFA, Marty quickly found out that the Devils weren't the only team that didn't want him, despite his history of success that no longer seemed relevant to the present.  He finally got a chance with the Blues two months into the season due to the "Maybe if someone gets hurt" scenario we all wondered about at the time, and despite managing to pocket three more wins, he quickly proved what we all pretty much knew:  he was finished.  It's not like he got screwed by the Devils, and I think he knows that.

Who has hurt feelings?  I'm sorry, anyone who has hurt feelings over seven games with the Blues is really losing sight of the big picture.  The guy gave us all of his best.  The retirement ceremony with the Blues, that was a little weird, I'll give you that, but that still isn't enough to "hurt" my feelings.

The retirement ceremony happens when it happens, but I don't think this season will be too soon for it.  I think if an actual date is announced, it will be similar to Niedermayer's situation, in that anyone who has any issues with Brodeur will have time to get past whatever's bothering them and will focus only on the good.

No animosity towards Marty going to St. Louis. It was his prerogative, nobody has any right to tell him how to wrap up his career. He wanted a to find out if he could still play...and he found out

As for coming back, all that Marty knows and held dear here in NJ is gone. Why bother?

Really? You are still carrying on about this?

Guess I am an unappreciative idiot then.

Stay classy.

I mean did I actively go out of my way to watch Marty in St. Louis?  No.  Did I go out of my way to AVOID that dopey retirement presser with the Blues stuff?  Yeah.  But honestly how many all-time great players finished their career with other teams (either by choice or not)?  In many cases you wouldn't even remember they were on those teams:

Babe Ruth - Boston Braves

Michael Jordan - Washington Wizards

John Unitas - San Diego Chargers

Joe Montana - Kansas City Chiefs

Bobby Orr - Chicago Blackhawks

Wayne Gretzky - New York Rangers

Of course it would have been a nice cherry on top of Marty's career if he finished his career that home game against the Bruins but it seldom ends up 'clean' like that

Yea but we were reaaally close here. Most of us thought he was going to retire in the offseason, I get that he still wanted to see if he had anything left but it was still disappointing when you consider the end result.

If Marty played 2-3 more seasons, even as a back up somewhere I think he belongs on that list. How many greats go out playing 7 games for another team?

If he wanted a backup contract Lou wouldve given him one in a second. He wouldve played more for us as a backup than he did in STL. Its a shame.

Come on, we talk about unnecessary vitriol towards others on this board enough to not call people who feel sentimental and bittersweet about Marty, 'idiots'.

Obviously, if you think someone who's unemployed but still wants to work somehow shouldn't dare exercise his right to find a new team...and that doing so taints THE longest body of work ever spent by an NHL goalie with one team BY FAR, and takes away from a career that was chock full of signature moments.  "The end result"?  Oh my god, he played seven whole games with another team when his original team didn't want him anymore!  The horror!  That ruins everything!  Now it's not the same!  fvcking REALLY?!

Has's list says it all, and there's more where they came from.  Look, you're one of those people who get can't over it and can't handle the fact that he didn't retire on your terms.  And sadly you're not alone.
