I don't see the NHL bending. However with Fehr now in the NHLPA , who knows. Maybe he steps up to the plate and says " Ummm there are already registered contracts with players playing to the age of 42 , 43 . how is it that you can not allow one now that takes the player to 42?

Let's hope this is being used as a way for the NHL to bend a little bit. Also let's hope the NHL doesn't say "Go Ahead" & away Kovy goes to Russia

the NHL doesn't care. the only squeeze would be on the Devils, who although JVB is so horny for Kovalchuk that it probably doesn't matter, could tell him to screw off... and then what?

The thing is, we're getting blinded by the light with Kovie. If Johnny Mac can coach, this is a team we can go to war with -- comparable defense to the past couple years, but more physical. If Greene plays like he did last year, especially the first half, this d is better, since Tallinder's a step up from Mottau. Solved the biggest problem with the forwards -- the lack of a true second line center -- by getting Arnott. Still have Marty. With Kovie, they're stacked. Without him, they're real good with some cap space come the trading deadline to make a run on somebody like Kaberle. Johnny Mac should be able to get real deep with that team.

To take it a step farther, Kovy's a tremendous talent who has never won because 1) he's played most of his career for a terrible organization and 2) he's never been coached. He sometimes does stupid things like hold the puck for too damn long because he doesn't know better. If Johnny Mac can't coach, Kovy won't be a difference maker. I'd take Kovy, but I'm sick of all of this, and if he's not willing to bend, and we can't make it work with the league (whom I hate with a blinding passion), we can afford to let him go

Also, Parise's implied that out inability to stick with a coach is the sole reason he might consider leaving. No matter what happens with this nightmare, the x-factor for this season and the team's future is Maclean.

As such, it should either be back to the drawing board for both sides, or back to Russia for Kovalchuk. New Jersey really doesn’t need Kovalchuk, and fans don’t need this frustration. By elimination, that makes Kovalchuk Kontinental Hockey League bound. It may not be the best solution, but it is a solution nonetheless. Maybe he can even take the Devils with him and make this the KHL’s problem. Who knows? They might smarten up and realize that 17 years exiled in Siberia, cold as it may be, just might end up feeling a little too much like an eternity.

+ 1. I've always had mixed feelings about Kovy, and the longer this drags on, the more negative I feel. If he's this great, why aren't more teams interested? He's talented, but he wants a historic deal, and he's done nothing to show that he merits it. If he can't renegotiate to something reasonable, maybe we wasted a lot of time and some opportunities to bring in solid role players this offseason, but it's not a catastrophe.

I do disagree with the article blaming the Devils -- the NHL made a bad CBA and did nothing to fix it for years; this is their problem, not ours. We didn't set the NHL back 10 years, their idiocy created a bad situation which they characteristically handled terribly, and now they have to deal with the possibility of one of their bigger names leaving for Russia.

The more serious issue than the immediate future of the Devils is the long term future of the league. We may underestimate the KHL, but it's getting stronger, and unless the NHL can fix some serious problems without a work stoppage, they could become a serious threat. During the lockout, English speaking players discovered they could cope playing in Europe. European players are more and more likely to leave. Jagr was a superstar who chose to play in Russia because they offered to pay more. St. Petersburg is making a run at Kovy, who, unlike Jagr, is in his prime. While only a couple of teams have the resources to give Kovy what he wants, the same is true in most of the European soccer leagues, which have tremendous success. I'm not saying they're better, or that we should abolish the cap, but until we can come up with an effective CBA, we shouldn't be calling the KHL a joke. If they pay better, and we keep alienating fans with stupid decisions and work stoppages, hockey could go across the pond.

the KHL is a joke. there's no way it can operate as a functional league. it's just a plaything. which I guess does mean it has alot in common with some top European soccer teams that were bought by rich people and brought up from nothing.

and IIRC, most of the NA players weren't exactly crazy about their experiences in the RSL. it was just a means to an end.

Looks like tomorrow is the deadline: http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Ilya-Kovalchuk-exploring-KHL-options-as-decision?urn=nhl-265497&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

This morning, Kovalchuk's Russian agent Yuri Nikolaev confirmed to Pavel Lysenkov of Sovetsky Sport that he indeed spoke with KHL's SKA. While Nikolaev refused to comment further, he did say that Friday is the day when the decision is made.

captain america might be on the move to toronto to free up space for kovy

Jamie Langenbrunner

Can the Devils' captain, Jamie Langenbrunner, be on the way out to accommodate Kovalchuk's contract? Some sources think he could land in Toronto. More on this soon.

Maybe the captain will stay and Bryce Salvador is on his way to Dallas
