Donation Suggestions

As many of you know, a few years ago I lost over 80 pounds when I switched from an anti-convulsant that caused weight gain to one that had the wondrous side-effect of weight loss. Almost 13 years of weight gain went away in about a year and a half, and has stayed off for over two years now.

I have given away some of my old clothes to the Dress for Success program and also gave some of them to a friend who needed them. Some can and should be turned into rags, some are only a little too big and can be sized down and made more in-style at the same time and I can keep those. However, I have some which are in very good shape, can't be sized down and could really help people. Remember, we are talking about 13 years worth of clothes here. I have looked at the women's shelters, and, essentially, they want cash donations. They don't even have phone numbers for donating anything else, the numbers are for emergencies. I don't for personal reasons, want to give to a religious organization.

So, where can I give these things? Any suggestions?

SA and goodwill pick up clothes from us along with other stuff... if ya have them coming out, its a good time to go through the garage and attic and clean out other thigns as well. :)

I want to start a church with no religious affiliation. Just a building with nice tinted glass windows where people get together for Sunday turkey dinners (with tofurky for me), raise money for the community, hold bingo in the basement....

SA is out but I had completely forgotten about Goodwill...I'm not sure where the closest one is but I think they will pick up. I have a few pieces of furniture they can have as well.

Good that you were able to get it taken care of quickly. I had forgotten that Salvation Army has a religious background. Down here in Austin Goodwill is everywhere and you hardly see Salvation Army. Even in parking lots instead of the usual bins (I guess you had too much for those?) they have trailers to put your stuff in and sometimes there's a person there to help.

They actually don't have bins anywhere near me and even if they did, I have a lot of stuff. Also, since they request that you clean everything, it seems kind of odd to clean it (including taking some of the dresses, sweaters and jackets to the dry cleaners) and then put it out in a bin. But I am getting rid of a fair amount of clothing, the medication I was on caused weight gain of an average of about 8 pounds a year so I have clothes in different sizes since I was on it for about 13 years. You can imagine the range of sizes I went through. I went from a size 6 and eventually got up into the womens sizes and wound up as a womens size 16. After I switched meds and started to lose the weight it was strange to go back through the sizes but at least I didn't have to buy much until I finally got to the end of the weight loss. I'm now a size 10 and seem to have settled there, which is fine w/me. But I have all that stuff in all those different sizes and they have to go!!!

For some of your less nice clothes, I used to know of a women's organization that, among other things, gave clothes to rape victims in emergency rooms to wear home, since they would either have their clothes damaged beyond repair or have to give up them up as evidence. This was in Chicago, not sure if there would be people doing the same thing near you.

There is also generally a big demand for donations of outerwear, especially this time of year. I'm sure google would turn up something in your area. And there's always the Red Cross. I think they will even come to your house to pick the stuff up.

This is less standard charitable, but do you have anything that isn't right for dress for success that could still be considered dressy? My mother gave a bunch of her clothes to our local high school's drama club one year, and got a big kick out of seeing her clothes on stage for the next 10 years or so.

They don't still have the bins in between the RR Station and Costcutters? I know they did about 3 years ago but haven't noticed lately...

They didn't the last time I went to the recycling station, or at least I didn't see them. They completely gutted and re-did the end of the strip mall where the Cost Cutters about 2 years ago so they may have been taken out then. Or maybe moved somewhere else.
