I've read some interviews from Duclair from Andrew Gross' blog, and he doesn't seem too full of himself. Seems like a kid happy to be in the running for an NHL job at 19

“Whatever happened, highs or lows, you’ve got to stay grounded,” Duclair said. “The real work starts now. For me, it’s to keep improving every day and adapting to certain situations. I talked to AV about it too. It’s not playing against some junior or AHL guys, it’s the big boys now and it’s going to be tough. But at the same time I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

“There were a couple more veterans in the lineup on the other side and it was a bit tougher but at the same time we kept battling and never gave up and all of a sudden came back there at the end,” Duclair said. “You’ve always got to know who is playing on the other side and who you’re matching up with. It goes along way with preparation.

“(The goal) was a great pass across ice by (Moore) there and I don’t know how he found me, but it went through a couple bodies there and I just wanted to get a shot on net and I think it squeezed through the net on its own,” Duclair added. “I’m surprised myself everyday but at the same time I’m gaining confidence with the help of the veterans. I keep saying it but it’s true. All the veterans have really helped me out through this camp. Obviously my life has changed with a little fame here and there but at the same time I just have to play my game, stay focused and come to the rink and work hard every day.”

“I want to stay here as long as possible,” Duclair said, who beat Steve Mason with a wicked,  roofed wrist shot in the first period.  “I think I made that clear enough coming into camp. “I’m just gaining confidence every day,” added Duclair, who played on a line with Haggerty and Chris Mueller. “The veteran guys here are really helping the young guys get comfortable. It makes a difference at the end of the day.”

“Yeah, for sure, I need to show them I’m a quick learner and I come here ready to work,” Duclair said. “Even though I don’t get chances on every shift, at least I’m staying consistent and doing the little things right.“With the injury with (Derek) Stepan there’s a spot available up front,” Duclair added. “With my style of lay I have to push the coaches to be in the top six. Obviously, I’m a younger player but I want to show them I can stick as a 19-year-old.”

“No, I knew it was going to be a little higher (pace) than juniors, the tempo of the game is high-paced and everything has to be done quickly and when you get the puck, you’ve got to move it right away and make fast plays,” Duclair said.

Budaj would be a great backup but his 1.4 cap hit hurts. I'd feel way more comfortable with him between the pipes than having both Clemmer and Kinkaid at the same time.

I guess you gotta see what Kinkaid do at some point but Budaj is solid, especially in front of our D.

I'm gonna miss Carter.  Oh well, it's not the end of the world.

i went on the minny board over on HF, not only do they not even know who he is they dont even understand why they picked up him/dont really want him.. i mean i get it hes only a fourth liner but he was pretty valued here for the role that he had he played it well.

Stop me if you've heard this one before - black kid in hockey thought to have a bad attitude

The tri/sd saga heats up for 2014/15 as tri calls sd a racist before the season even starts. Back to you in the booth, Steve.

Just kidding guys. Not trying to stir the pot, couldn't pass that one up.

I read today that after acquiring Boychuk and Leddy the Islanders have sold out all 41 games at home and some have them being #1 in Metro regular season.

I think taking the division title is a stretch for them with so many new faces, but I think they are a team that has improved a lot in the offseason. The Isles, Columbus and Detroit are the teams I see us battling with for either 3rd in the division or the 2 wildcard spots in the conference. You could maybe put Toronto in there as well if their added depth can overcome Randy Carlyle's incompetence.

I'm not calling SD a racist, I'm calling the hockey establishment racist - I mean, I bet Duclair is cocky, but I think a lot of other players are too and it gets overlooked.  People are going to ask 'How did this guy fall to the 3rd round?' and without any other knowledge of his game it's very simple, he has two strikes against him, he plays in the Q and he's black.

I'm pretty sure most of us weren't super thrilled when we claimed him on waivers a few years ago. He will grow on them like he did for us, I'm sure.

It is indeed a hockey problem. No one but Evander Kane, PK Subban, and now Duclair seem to get labeled as "full of themselves". It's not too far from the whole "enigmatic Russian" thing either. I'm curious how Patrick Kane or Sidney Crosby would be viewed if they were black.

Oh yeah, him too, same old storyline haha... The way they tore him down before the draft, you'd have thought he'd refuse to join the Islanders (like many have), and yet he showed up, put his pen to paper and I'm sure will do great for them.

I mean, you'd have to put the onus on Canadian media, they start these storylines and American outlets (and fans) lazily gobble it up and redistribute them. Definitely a lot of racial bias among the Canadian media, many of whom come from rural small-town Canada.

Subban may or may not be full of himself, but he's definitely full of something else lmfao: http://deadspin.com/p-k-subban-tactical-farter-1642889968

Not saying your completely wrong in this, but Sean Avery says hi.

I'm pretty confident Sean Avery didn't get half of the criticism he would've gotten if he was Russian or some kind of minority. Media referred to him as a "bad boy", like some sort of cutesy attractive trait. The fans knew he was a douchebag but you never saw a TSN or RDS feature about him being a cancer to the locker room or making a mockery of the game; or anything along the lines of the colorful (pun intended) language they use for guys like Subban or Kane. I can't even believe he didn't get more NY Post headlines considering some of his actions.

And trust me, I'm not a super liberal "white-guilt" dude on issues like this usually, but the very subtle racial tensions within the NHL, or at least NHL-covering media, especially in Canada, is a real thing.

Also, some of the language from fans (Boston, New York, specifically) you saw last playoffs directed toward Wayne Simmonds, PK Subban, or Joel Ward 2 years ago, is pretty telling. I get it, it's a predominantly white sport, but it shouldn't really be tolerated because of that.

Here's an insane (and real) example from the Vancouver sun very recently lol...

I'm more interested in whether what SD is saying about Duclair is actually true?  I honestly have no idea about him, and actually had no idea he was black until Tri mentioned it.  But it's hard not to call Subban cocky -- he's earned it, and the Canadians have shown how racist they are by making him one of the top paid defensemen in the league.  Winnipeg obviously showed that they were closet klansmen by taking Kane with the fourth pick in the draft (as well as those racist scouts that had him ranked that high), and they continue to insist they are keeping him despite the fact that his point production has been a bit underwhelming in the past couple of years, and the fact that he favorited a tweet that said he would be a good fit on another team.  I would imagine the board here would explode if anyone on the Devils did something like that.  Those scouts also showed how racist they were when it turned out that Darnell Nurse was drafted ahead of Nichushkin (just imagine if there were an "enigmatic" Russian that was black!!).

And I don't see why it's that unusual that DuClair slid to third round.  His point production declined from his first year in junior to his draft year.  Sometimes it happens.
