smelly
Does he play on this team anymore? He has been absolutely pathetic this season. And, to top it all off, he has a big mouth -- he is always bitching about the fact that the team doesn't score. How about putting one in the net before the birds come north again? At least he should come a lot cheaper than he might have otherwise. Helluva a walk year for him!!
Guest Devsrule
Just remember that Madden is a defensive forward. I know he should put one in once in awhile but give the guy a break.
insanity_gallops
He might be slumping... but his comments about scoring still hold true. And make no mistake about it -- John Madden will be greatly sought after this summer. Teams will line up to present him offers in hopes of acquiring a great checking center. smelly
Teams will line up to present him offers in hopes of acquiring a great checking center. My point exactly -- he will be paid for that subsidiary role, and will not get the higher salary he would have commanded for being anything close to a true two-way guy. Guest Devsrule
Madden is a role player, not a sniper. People expect too much offensively from him.

NJDevs4978
The Devils have sucked at EVERYTHING more after Stevens got hurt...thing is the suckage started with him in the lineup and has increased. Madden's got to pick it up, same as everyone else. We have three injuries (Stevens, Schwab and Bergy) but it's almost as if we have four cause Madden's been so damn ineffective lately. Then again he was about as bad in 2001.

djstubbs
He hasn't had a goal in now, 21 games.
Weekes Head
Like I said in the Game THread, maybe if he gets a hard enough slapshot he might be able to shoot the puck THROUGH the goalie, that's the only way he'll get one. He can't hit an open net if his life depended on it, otherwise, he pounds it at the crest. It doesn't bother me as much as others, though, because he's not a goal scorer. He never was. He was just blessed with a good year, and now people expect too much out of him. I think even HE started expecting more out of himself, which is making him grip the stick even tighter. I dunno, I think it's definitely mind games, self-induced.
cyrisjoe
you will all be on the madden bandwagon once he shuts down the superstars of the east and scores you a big goal
Don
you will all be on the madden bandwagon once he shuts down the superstars of the east and scores you a big goal A-yup. Agreed. With hockey fans, it's all "What have you done for me lately." Do you all really think that the guy that was being considered for the Conn Smythe, the 2 time Selke nominee and 1 time Selke winner is now all washed up? He's lost all his talent? Or do you think it's possible, just maybe possible, that he's going through a slump.... Edited February 20, 2004 by Don Whiting

Jas0nMacIsaac
Well Madden is a defensive forward and he should remember that this offseason when negotiating a contract. For some reason I could see him holding out.
Triumph
Holding out for what? He's an unrestricted free agent. Anyway it's really easy for me to say since I don't have to deal with Madden blowing breakaway after breakaway as though he got a hand transplant from Andreas Salomonsson, but I like this slump of Madden's. Holik's price went up 3 million a year with that great 2002 season he had. I think we can knock off a million a year from Madden's if this continues. If anything I'd guess Madden is wearing down. I'd like to see his ice time reduced, if that's at all possible on this team devoid of anyone to replace his time.

Derek21
I have watched enough of Madden this season to know he's still trying. He's just not getting the breaks offensively. But his hustle is still there. It hasn't been a typical season for him. Maybe he's pressing because of the UFA status. Who knows? But one thing about him. He will never dog it. cyrisjoe
someone explain UFA and RFA whats the difference
Derek21
RFA is for any player under the age of 31. Meaning the team retains the right to sign that player. If that player left for another team signing an offersheet, the original team would be compensated with as much as 5 #1 draft picks. The Rangers tried this once signing Sakic to a frontloaded offer. Colorado matched it. Had they not, Sakic would have been a Ranger and Neil Smith would have coughed up 5 first round selections to get him (meaning 98, 99, 00, 01 and 02 #1's would have went Colorado's way). Carolina also tried this with Fedorov. They gave him 25+ million up front. But Detroit matched it. UFA is when a player is 31, they can go anywhere once July 1st hits. The only compensation is a midround pick if they leave. Other UFA status can be attained sooner if a player has been around for 10 years and not received the league minimum. Then they become a UFA. It happened with Kasparaitis. Hope that explains things.
olp
Maybe he's pressing because of the UFA status. Bingo! I think we have a winner here folks - in my opinion anyway. If you think back to many Madden interviews this season, he seems tremendously preoccupied with his contract status and the possible lockout. He was the one who seemed overly concerned about the possible move by the Devils. Seems as though the longer he goes, the more the pressure he's putting on himself (there's a no brainer, eh?). Good news though folks - a thread has started about his poor play, so I expect him to breakout the next game.
msweet
This all started when, for the first time in my life, I actually put a background on my computer. And that background is a a great picture of Madden and 2 Stanley Cups. I've just removed the background, so all will be fine now.
