Brian Gionta and other possibilities

Hasnt been much discussion around here lately so figured i would start up a new thread to discuss a couple things regarding our roster for next season... ive seen on some other boards and facebook a lot of people discussing the possibility of brian gionta coming back.. although its not the same brian gionta we once had this one is now 35 and wont be the fix to our goal scoring problem that we really need, i wouldnt mind having brian back but not only him we still need someone who is going to bring in some excitement. What other thoughts does everyone have about brian and any other realistic possibilities that the devils could sign to bring in a goal scorer that we need

The problem is we have a ton of 2nd and 3rd line wingers. Where is he going to fit? I'm not against it, but where is the room?

Pretty much this and quite frankly I am tired of Lou bringing back over-the-hill former ex-Devils for their 2nd or even 3rd tours of duty.  This team really needs some top level talent so I think they should shoot higher than Brian.

I'm tired of the bringing back of ex-Devils myself.  Worked with Claude Lemieux, not so much with just about everyone else.  Gio scored 18 goals and put up 40 points this season and is 35...no thanks.  Devils need someone who can be an upgrade, not more of the same.

As for players who can really help...Paul Stastny is intriguing, but he'll be expensive (read:  overpaid), and his numbers the last four seasons aren't really anything special.  If Lou decides to trade for a scorer, it's going to cost them one of their young defenseman, and other assets...not saying he shouldn't do it, just saying we should be prepared for the cost.  He's not going to fleece anyone with some fan-proposed quantity trade of guys no one wants (basically, a Tedenby is not an asset, he's a throw-in at best).

Pretty much agree.  Paul is still probably the best and most realistic person to get out there.  I doubt Vanek wants to come to NJ and while Paul will be overpaid, we really do not have another choice.

A trade is possible too but just looking at our forward prospects we have some nice players coming up (Matteau and Boucher), I doubt they will bring the firepower the Devils need.  At this point I am willing to trade either Larsson or even Gelinas at this point.  It would hurt to lose either of them, but I could live with it.

id rather trade larsson over gelinas, hes just being left in albany to rot out anyway.

While Larsson is being criminally mis-handled, I think he still has more of an upside than Gelinas.  At this point Gelinas is almost to the point where he is strictly a PP specialist.  They are nice to have but I think that is a bit to waste an entire roster spot for.

Hopefully Stastny cools off a bit because a huge playoff run will absolutely raise his value

Someone will overpay him.  That's how it always works with UFA...GMs can't help themselves.  Look what friggin' Clarkson got.  Not knocking David, just saying it won't surprise me if Stastny gets 7 years at near-max dollars.

Well, yeah but there are obviously varying levels of getting overpaid.

I don't think Clarkson is a good comparison to Stastny because he "grit" and "work ethic" that GMs seem to love. Obviously PS is 10x the player Clarkson is and will be getting paid probably north of 7 mill AAV. I think Bettman said the cap will be somewhere around 69-70 million, with a lot of $ coming off the books with Brodeur and hopefully one of Salvador and Volchenkov, Devils can easily use that money to throw at Stastny. I wouldn't mind if Lou gave him 7/55.

The goal is for less Giontas, not more.

Not sure the fascination with ex-Devils coming back. Most have been disasters, and those moves almost say how pathetic the Devils NHL scouting is or Lou's ability to trust them that he keeps going back to the ex-Devils well. There are other players in the league!

Most Devils fans were getting tired of Gionta in 2009. 4 years later, and it wouldn't be more fun. He's also the Captain of the Canadiens. They just might want to keep him in a small role, but who knows.

Larsson is waiver eligible next year.  So he'll either be on the Devils roster or traded.

I don't think there is any doubt he is with the team next year, and probably on the second pairing.

If Larry Robinson were here he would already be getting 20 minutes plus.  Not sure what Deboer or Stevens are doing with him.

I assume Stevens is telling him to be more physical, which is what he did with Gelinas and then his game went down the drain.

I'd love Stastny or Moulson but I think some things will need to change before we can attract big name UFA's. I fear we still have the reputation with players around the league as being the place points go to die. It takes a special kind of player with a special kind of attitude towards team play to want to play here. Kovy was different because we were the only team willing to pay him what he wanted. Just speculation but I think if LA had matched our offer he would still be in LA.

I get the feeling Stastny wants to stay in Colorado. They've got a great future ahead of them, so I'm sure he wants to be a part of it. Although, I'm not sure why he wouldn't have signed an extension by now. Also, he says he'd be willing to give the Avs a discount: http://www.denverpost.com/avalanche/ci_25272278/paul-stastny-absolutely-willing-grant-avs-discount

If the Devils are going to go for someone with high end talent, it's going to have to be Vanek or Gaborik.

The problem is that both Landeskog and Duchene's new deals kick in next year, plus they will have to pay McKinnon in 2 years, plus O'Reilly is RFA this summer. Colorado has some big money to hand out soon, and Stastny may be the odd man out.

Erik Johnson will also need a new deal.

Erik Johnson and Tyson Barrie will need new deals. Barrie is RFA coming off 715K season. He's in for a big raise coming off a near 40pt D.

ROR needs one a new deal. Stastny needs one. If McKinnon gets even better, he's looking at 7-8M in 2 years.

They have a lot of centers, even though guys liek ROR are playing on the wing.

If they want to keep Statsny and can, perhaps ROR becomes expendable for young D/wingers and perhaps a Larsson package could get things done. You never know.

Just to echo what Devil Dan 56 said, it was pretty much decided before the deadline that they wouldn't trade Stastny and they'd bank on keeping him for the playoff run. But financially, I think they've already counted him as the odd man out. There's no realistic way they keep their superstar kid lines intact if they sign Stastny. If they sign him, one of their generational kid stars will be out at some point when their deals are up or via trade. Having Stastny leave was the lesser of two evils. In fact, re-signing him would be a big mistake on their part, I hope Sakic's not that dumb.
