I really am beginning to hate our fans.

This is actually a fair post and I appreciate that.  Thank you.

I disagree about the rowdy element part.  I mean there were plenty of rowdiness back at CAA, but not to the level you see at the Prudential Center.  I am not saying its to the level of Philly, but I hear plenty about people wanting to "protect home ice" and make visitors "uncomfortable."  I mean really?  Are we trying aspire to be Philly?  I certainly hope not.

For many years I was and still am proud that we are not like the mutants down in Philly.  Maybe that's why I get pretty heated when I see and hear fans wanting to aspire to become that as it just sucks to even think that.

Theres wanting to make our atmosphere loud and "intimidating" to the opposing team and then there's being like Philly. I think we can all agree that we dont envy anything about Philly.

Well there is the thing.  Loud and intimating is fine and I am all on-board with that.  Chanting about teams that aren't playing that night and telling the other team YS when we are down 4-1 is another.  I want loud, but not stupid.  I guess when the on-ice product eventually gets better the volume will hopefully increase.

Yeah I can agree about Philly.

I'm late jumping into this conversation so forgive me if this has been asked or brought up already.

Being away from the the team/arena/state I'm a bit out of the loop, but....does the chicken dance song modified at the end with "The Rangers Suck" still go on?  That was one of my fondest memories as a kid and I always thought it was hilarious especially when it would happen and we weren't even playing the Rangers.  It just brought a sense of animosity and competition (in a good way) to the arena and fans, and made our arena a formidable place to play.  I have to laugh sometimes when I hear the phrase "home ice advantage" because, really, how much of an impact can we, as fans, really have on the outcome of a game (a$$hole-ish and brutal physicality that you see in the likes of Philthadelphia notwithstanding)?  But it's things like that that make the arena dynamic and help project and implant the fans into the game.  I was probably anywhere from 6 to 12 years old (I moved at 12) when I would hear that and by no means did it scar me or turn me into someone with an uncontrollable sewer mouth (OK, my wife would disagree with that last part, at least when it comes to sports :)  ).

I think any uproar about the 'You Suck' chant is quite petty and anyone complaining about it needs a reality check.  Granted I'm definitely of the opinion that the content portrayed in society and the media (mostly TV and the internet, i.e. Jersey Shore trashy behavior) these days is wayyyy over the line and could be called indecent, but the word 'suck' is pretty mellow and a borderline curse word if you ask me. If it was "Hey, F*ck You!" I could understand, but this?  C'mon.

I heard the chant for the first time a few years back, I think during our Cup run in 2012, and it brought such a smile to my face and reminded me of the Chicken Dance/Rangers Suck chant of my childhood.  There's nothing wrong with a little good old fashioned ribbing and poking fun.

I like the idea of making visiting fans (of our rivals/semi-rivals) uncomfortable.

The ironic part is that this year (and it also happened a number of years, like 2008-2011), everyone's selling their tickets to the rivalry games. You could hear a pin drop at the Rangers and Flyers games this season, and you could hear nothing but opposing fans at the last Islanders game.

I'll throw in some comments on the anti-family angle this thread has taken.

I have a 7 year old daughter, so far I have only taken her to one game. The YS chant is something I can easily explain, if I needed to. I am pretty sure she's probably heard the word "suck" used in that context before, in a movie or on TV (where I am able to supervise but you can't catch everything), or more likely, in school or at one of her activities, which often involve older kids.

"Flyers Swallow" is a little harder to explain, but its easy enough to distract her from hearing that because you know it's coming. Not to mention, when that many people are saying something, and you don't know what it is, you can't always make it out anyway. Especially if you are seven.

From a parent's perspective, its a little more difficult to handle the drunk morons who spend the entire game yelling "Crosby's a jerk" for three periods for no apparent reason (this is based on actual experience, luckily she wasn't at that game). I mean seriously, is he that much of a jerk that you had to yell it for two hours? That's just obnoxious whether you have a kid with you or not.

All of the above being said, as a parent, you KNOW there will be obnoxious drunks, offensive chants, etc. when you go to a sporting event. Some places are worse than others but it happens all over the place. So you as a parent have to decide whether you can handle your kid's reaction, otherwise you have the option of not going. I know my daughter will be fine, she understands right and wrong, and all of that.

As long as nothing is directed toward her, its all easily explained or ignored. When I was 10 I wore a Devils hat to a Rangers-Devils game at MSG and a grown man threatened to kill me if I didn't take my hat off. My dad just kind of rushed me away and that was that. It would take everything I have not to knock someone out if that happened to my kid, and honestly, that's probably what would happen.

Is it obnoxious? Maybe. Annoying? At times. Would I expect anyone to take any steps to make it a more family friendly experience for my benefit? Not at all. I am opposed to the changing of the goal song, not because of the YS chant (which I didn't mind and participated in), but because it was a long standing tradition even before the chant.

In terms of people "having to explain" these things to other adults who haven't been to a Devils game before or being embarrassed by them, that's nonsense. Any adult with a half a brain can figure it out, and being embarrassed over the conduct of other people you don't even know but share a team allegiance with is just plain dumb.

I had a friend who was a Kings fan and moved to NJ, and he never understood why the Devils fans chant "Rangers Suck" at games where the Rangers aren't even playing. To which I responded, "Well wherever they are they fvcking suck". He eventually became a Devs fan and realized this was true.

Yes, yes, yes and yes. Well said on all accounts.

They weren't booed cause of the you suck chant they were booed because of the price increase in tickets when this team has no right to do a price increase with 3 straight years of no playoffs and this awful current team that we have to watch

It's plenty easy for islanders fans to have passion again all of a sudden when they have one of the best teams in the league. The majority of their fans are front runners just like the majority of sports fans in general. .[/quote

That's actually not true. I live on li and everyone I know and meet has been isles fans since birth. yes there are front runners now, but I think that's more the causal long islander realizing 1. they're pretty good this yr,and 2. After this season they won't be in nassau anymore and will move to Barclay's(which ultimately I don't think will be successful)

They weren't selling out the building over the last however many years like they are. Isles fans are back on the bandwagon to actually pay for tickets again.

Lol.

Good post in general though. My biggest problem has always been what I have been saying exists all along: the very few who would ruin it for everyone. When I used to sit in the stands with my little sister, I would be very nervous what the single fan might yell in times of silence. And every so often I would hear something just vulgar, and that would really sicken me: that there was nothing I could do to prevent my sis from hearing that. Just that someone would be a big enough jerk to scream something out loud like that, knowing there are children, and families in the stands, made me furious.

But that was very often a fear that didn't come true. To this day, the worst experiences I have had fan-wise is with Rangers and Flyers fans. By FAR. We are talking beer spilled on my sisters at MSG, beer spilled on me at the Rock, physical threats and gestures, blind-siding Devils fans with punches, and just plain nasty things out of their mouths to anything even resembling a human being, despite age or sex.

In almost two decades of fandom, I have almost NEVER (though it has happened), seen a Devils fan do something of a physically threatening nature to an opposing fan, unless he was responding to something already done to him. And that is something I am immensely proud of as a Devils fan. We have long taken everything in stride and been extremely classy; protecting children, and helping out fellow fans. Sure there has always been that Jersey roughness, but it is mostly loveable.

To be fair, I have not been around as much the last few years.

Why do you keep bringing this up? That was a 1 game deal when the front office surprised everyone with that awful bon Jovi song. This hasn't happened since.

That's not cool, I dont care if they play the Hokey Pokey. The goal song shouldn't be so important that you disregard the fact that they scored and boo the song. That's retarded.

During the mid 90s, I saw many fist fights outside the CAA between Devils fans and Rangers fans, and I'm sure some often gem were our fault.

Like maybe 2%.

That song was so bad that it really deserved the response it got. The players aren't stupid. They knew the crowd wasn't booing them.

That being said how many times can we all repeat the same stuff? Just close this thread already and let's move on.

What the players knew is irrelevant. Not cheering for your team when you score? Are you at the game because you are a fan or just to try to be witty with your chants and big annoying horn?

And I would also like to point out that I don't hate families or even parents. That is the same generalization that I'm apparently being accused of. However, it's no secret that families and parents are the majority in this and that the plan is to switch to a overly family friendly/generic atmopshere

Well now I'm going to have to teach my kids about irony

Families don't bother me. I will continue yelling "You suck" because I enjoy it. I will continue to not partake in any part of the whistle after "Rangers suck". And no one will change their stance on anything.
