Elias about Lou's free agents approach

Patty does not get more then 4 mil per, he's 37 and has not had a good year, not even sure I want to goto 3 years, offer him 2 years at 3.5mil per. Its a gift.

i totally agree with you here, dont want to see him walk by any means! but again another one of those guys i dont want to see them waste a ton of money on him when the other side of the coin just isnt there to justify it!

So what do you think the Devils offer him?  Years and $?

3/15 i think gets it done.  The Devils can risk that third year because right now they are not going to have a super-old team at that point, and all their critical young players will still be RFAs.  I think a lot of other teams would have to be wary of that third year.

I agree he would likely sign with us under those terms.  I was thinking we would offer him less.  Would a team possibly throw out something like 4/22 or 4/24?!?

I think a team would need to be very desperate for him to offer that kind of contract. Plus, not a lot of teams will have 5 or 6 million a year to toss a 37 year old.

I also think it would take a pretty big difference in contract for him to leave here for somewhere else. He's probably not very interested in uprooting his life at the end of his career unless he absolutely has to. I think he, like Brodeur, appreciate the anonymity of playing in Jersey.

Agreed. I don't think teams are going to be too keen to throw big money at aging stars with the cap coming down.

No one good would do that.  Teams near the floor might, I guess, for reasons that I wouldn't have the faintest idea.  Teams don't have any money this off-season, I don't think people realize just how little money is out there for good free agents.

You'd best prepare yourself. This is another one Lou is probably going to drop the ball on.

Lou has done more for this organization than anyone, but this is one of the stupidest mentalities I think a GM can take. Why would you waste all this time and lose that negotiating power.

what negotiating power?  the player has all the power becasue he can go ufa.  Do you really think that if Patty said Lou, 'I know it's during the season but lets get this contact done right now' that it wouldn't be done in an hour or 2.  Lou isn't going to overpay, which is why he lets the players see what they are worth on the market.  Lou won't overpay but he will pay market value,  not lowball  Look at Zachs last rfa contract.

JVB was the prime force behind the Kovy signing. Lou would have never done that.

Casue Lou has never gone after top tier talented players like Gilmore or Molginy or those types of players.   It's not like the team ever signed the best available free agent like Rolston.  How else after decades of non top draft picks is the franchise gonna get top tier talent.  When Lou wants someone, he goes after him.  Doesn't always get him, but he trys.

I'm always shocked that devils fans don't get Lou.  He isn't going to say anything to the media.  Just becasue nothing is leaking to the press about contracts or trades or anything,  doens't mean things aren't  happening behind the scenes.

I'm always shocked when devils fans aren't fans of Lou.  The team is a reflection of his philosophies.

My thoughts are Clarckson is signing somewhere else for too much.  I don't blame him, and I won't blame Lou depending on the $$.

I see Patty doing what Marty did.  Go to free agency and then re-sign.  i think other teams will offer him that 3rd year and Lou will match it. 3 yr just under 15?

Difference between kovy and gilmour/mogilny was that kovy was signed during his prime. Gilmour and mogilny were already past their prime when Lou traded for them.

JD has an affection for Devils players.  I can see CBJ offering above market for Elias.  There are teams that will pay Elias above what people are thinking.  The questions is what does the player want.  Having missed the playoffs two of the past 3 years could factor in big time on his return.

one of my big problem with Lou and the way he handled Zach or any UFA situation waiting last minute is that we're losing them for NOTHING.

i mean obviously if you're in a position to make a run or in the playoffs it's hard to go and trade away some of your top players, and the team is more important than one player.

But the way he's doing it he's really putting himself in a corner and it's a HUGE gamble.

If he knows he wants to re-sign a certain UFA, approach him in the season and if you see that the players want to wait for free agency... means he may have a foot out of the door already, so well it might suck to trade one of your top player but it's a business, play hard ball. and its only common sense...

THIS is what Lou should have done with Zach and should do with any top players:

"Buddy you can either re-sign now if you really want to be here we'll deal the numbers and get it done but if you want to be here we'll make it happen, if you want to test the market and see the interest out there, I cannot risk losing you for nothing so i have to deal you for assets and if you can't get a good offer you can still re-sign here in july but i CAN'T lose you for nothing. The ball is in your court now."

Nothing wrong with that approach, it's not disrespectful, it's only common sense. Players and agents would understand the situation and it's putting you in a situation to really bounce back and set yourself to find solutions faster. You're in the driver seat then. And you can get a bigger return than if you trade him after the season for free agency, cause teams knows then the guy want to test the market, you dont give up assets and trade for his rights risking to lose him too like Philly with Hamhuis.

keep in mind that with Lou its not always what makes more sense that is happening... look at the Salvador contract. So we could very well see a 4 years contract for Patty

Sals contract is ridiculous, With Patty though, I highly doubt any teams will pay him 6 mill or better at 37 yrs old. offer him a 3yr/12 mill. Just to finish out his career here. :blahblah:

Do the Devils get to within two victories of a SC without Parise last season?  How well do you think it would've flown with both the Devil players and the Devils fans if Lou had traded Parise in-season, when the team had clearly come together after a rocky start and was playing good hockey?  And as we saw with the Devils gave up for Kovy, the returns don't always amount to as much as one might think.

Stop acting like you have a better handle on how to do Lou's job than Lou does.  Lou should've done this and Lou should've done that, blah blah blah.  Maybe Lou simply thought he had a very good chance to re-sign Parise, and thought Parise helped to give the Devils the best chance to win the Cup in 2012, and a SC run like the one the Devils enjoyed made a good case as any for why re-signing with the Devils would've been a good move for Parise.

It...just...didn't...work...out, as far as Parise leaving goes.

But are you now saying you didn't want the 48-28-6 season you saw last season?  The Devils taking out two hated rivals in both the Flyers and the Rangers on the way to the SCF?  Do you think all of that happens without Parise last year?

And what you keep forgetting is Parise was coming off a knee injury before the '11-'12 season.  His trade value was probably not that high coming into the '11-'12 campaign.  And it took him a while to get going that year...when he found his stride, the Devils were really playing terrific hockey...after a 12-12-1 start that included 5 SO wins, the Devils went 36-16-5.  Lou was supposed to potentially wreck that team's mojo?  This is why you have to stop looking at everything so damned black-and-white.  There were a lot of shades of gray that made everything involving Parise much trickier than you want to believe.
