Canadian Anthem/ Chants

Booing or heckling the Canadian national anthem is stupid and immature.  Just stand there, let Arlette do her thing, and give a golf clap at the end.  I have seen my fair share of Canadiens visiting the CAA and/or the Rock make comments, boo and give the Hitler salute to our national anthem and the "hero of the game" segment, but there is no reason to stoop to that level.  They were all from Montreal/Quebec, most came on bus trips, and were 1/2 in the bag before the anthem even started.

Ok I'll give in and talk about the  'Flyers swallow chant".

I cringe every time I hear it. Its incredibly bush league and yesterday I had to watch a father in front of me try to explain to his young kids what everyone was saying. That chant is embarrassing for the fan base. Everyone should just stop it.

And the two guys in 120 who screams "Crosby watches" after the entire chant...just stop it. You guys already mock the referees enough after EVERY penalty. A Devil can take the most obvious penalty but this clown decides to start an a$$hole chant, and sadly many people in the section join in. All these people just embarrass themselves and the fan base every single year. Some of these season ticket holders are starting to heckle women who come to the arena supporting an opposing team. I go to these games with my sister or my girlfriend and I just find it incredibly offensive and it makes the entire night awkward having to listen to these 'people'.

I can take drunk, loud, obnoxious people. But I cannot take sober people who act like complete idiots at every game. Only bad thing about having season tickets is you get stuck next to a lot of these clowns.

100% agree with you.  Totally bush league.

This crowd was not a rowdy drunk crowd at all on a 1pm game on Presidents Day, and it doesnt make it any less disrespectful if players or coaches dont care.

Not sure where you were sitting but from my view point (section 129) there was a nice, light applause after the Canadian anthem.  I totally agree with your point but I didn't experience that myself.

I don't mind the "Rangers suck" chant at all.  But the "Flyer's swallow, Crosby watches, Parise joins in, and Avery cleans the sheets" crap has got to stop.  Not only is it bush league, but it goes way too far over the line.  I can deal with telling my kid not to swear like the people sitting around me, and he's not old enough to understand the swallow thing yet, but that is not a conversation I want or need to have with him anytime soon.

I only like the Rangers suck chant when we actually play them.  To hear it 10 times a game when we are not even playing them is again more inferiority complex crap.

I also hate how the Diablos do the D-E-V-I-L-S chant EVERY period.  It used to be special when Baumann did it only once a game usually in the 2nd period.  Now it is just another chant from a guy in sec 122 who doesn't even do it well.

easy solution; have the devils do a montage of the great canadian devils past and present for a canada day or whatever, then play the anthem and let's see how many idiots boo.

Or better yet, have all our Canadian players like Marty and Clarkson skate off in the middle of our anthem for their pre-puckdrop skate while the rest of us entertain ourselves with the national anthem...

I don't remember hearing the Rangers suck chant much this year. I may have finally tuned it out.

I don't like the disrespect of anthems, or the cursing or any of that stuff either, but unfortunately, that is one of the side effects of a young growing fan base. It's juvenile, but when you get a few drunk college kids together, that's what they find 'funny'. There's really no stopping it. Disrespect, racism, homophobia, etc are all considered clever humor at that age. And it's not just our fans... anyone who plays a couple of games of NHL 13 online can tell you what that age group is like worldwide.

Hoegardeen is owned by InBev aka Budweiser.  It is piss-water.

How about the Goose Island beer stand or Landshark or the IPA stand? The Rock has a great selection of beer, second to only maybe Red Bull Arena or Citi Field in the tristate area.

Tough crowd! What chants (or beers) do you like, then? Comparing the silent arena we had a few years ago to now, I'll take anything we can get as an upgrade.

So you get offended by Habs fans disrespecting our anthem or country and you do the same thing? Thats the problem with our world in a nutshell on a small scale of course. Just be the better person.

Yep, that's absolutely it and I don't feel bad about it at all. Once again, fvck em. Anything to make the arena a more hostile place to play or visit for opposing fans (short of actual fisticuffs/swearing) is fine by me. From reading this thread it seems most people would rather every fan just sat on their hands and watched intently in silence. The fact that people complain about the "You suck" or anything similar is mind-boggling. If those opposing fans are offended then good. Let them go back to their home arena and stay out of ours.

Landshark is a poor man's Corona and Goose Island is another inBev aka Budweiser mass-produced piss-water.  When they start serving some halfway decent beers or craft beers, then I will give it a shot.

I like the "Let's go Devils chant" a lot as well as many others.  I just do not like these stupid chants that are supposed to be put-downs to other teams that we are not even playing that day.  What sense does that make other than we seem obsessed about them to the casual or outside fan?

I do like the D-E-V-I-L-S chant a lot as I have a lot of fond memories of it when Baumann did it.  But he knew he shouldn't beat a dead horse by doing it only once a game, not EVERY period.  Plus the guy who does it now in the Diablos section doesn't even do it correctly and the guy doing it by the Crazies is so-so at best.

Half a section did it today, it was blatantly loud. Its just moronic to say these things when we have 7-9 Canadians on the team with Stevens, Barr, and Deboer on the bench. Completely distasteful in my opinion.

EDIT: saying another team does this or says this doesnt make these fans any better. I think we can be better than this.

I don't partake in doing it but I just don't care.

the stuff with the rangers sucks chant and you suck chant is brought up all the time on here year after year and I don't care about it either.

I'm just glad we have been having good crowds with fans who are into the games.

I'm not saying yelling dumb sh!t during canadas anthem is something I agree with but I've attended road games at the majority of the arenas on the east coast and I've heard bruins, rangers, islanders and flyers fans do the same thing. There are idiots everywhere, its not gonna change.

IDK about you, but I used to be pretty proud about how classy our fanbase used to be and our treatment towards other teams fans (outside of Philly and the Rags).  If you want to turn the Rock into the WF Center then be my guest but I refuse to lower myself to that filth.

I'm going to attempt to try to come to the defense of the college student a bit here, but depending on your experiences at the games, you might honestly believe that the stupid, childish, heckling of anything and everything is status quo. I recall one idiot in particular I met in the $10 ticket line a few years ago, who thought he was hilarious, but when he told the same 6 jokes over and over every period of every game he's ever been to, that sh!t gets old fast. Yet if you're 17-20 and are new to going to games alone, without parents and the ease of acquiring alcohol, you're gonna get young people who are way too drunk and think that yelling the kind of stupid sh!t they did in high school classrooms for laughs is the thing to do here.

I have a few rules for heckling that I try to keep to.

1. Keep it sports/city/state related. No need to mention someone's mother or gf, just remind those Philly fans that they live in pennsyltucky and that they put a Rocky statue outside the art museum, that should be plenty. If not, mention that their team sucks at playing hockey.

2. If there's kids under the age of 12 within a couple rows, I try not to swear as much(if you bring kids to a sporting event, you know there's gonna be swearing) and will try not to use the "f word" at all. Sitting in the cheapseats for a rivalry game is a bit different than sitting in a suite and usually you feel what's going to be acceptable or not.

3. STFU during the national anthem, Canadian or American. I'M LISTENING TO THE fvckING SONG!!

The idiocy occurs when someone's gotta yell, "hey stupid other fan, you're stupid because you like men and your favorite player does too" just because he's under 25 and way too drunk. The problem is that alcohol and idiocy is an attractive thing to some people and where there's alcohol, there's idiots, so some of this is unavoidable, but some of it is that we need to make sure when people act like idiots, try to either A. Calmly mention to the person that you're trying to watch the game and don't need the commentary, preferably without swears or an insult, not trying to engage the man, just get him to feel embarrassed and shut up. Because if someone doesn't call them out, you might get some other drunk person 6 rows down to high five the guy and vindicate him, giving him the energy to yell at someone for another hour straight(which happened at the last game I went to, idiots).

No no no, no one is saying that. I love a loud arena, the loudest chants are not these silly chants. We have been louder in terms of cheering the team after a great shift, or a huge PK. We are now chanting players names after they scored or made a big play or save. I use to remember I was the only one clapping for an icing, now its a solid applause for icings. The Kill chant is great for the PK and we are getting the team going with many well timed Lets Go Devils chants. We are indeed louder and much more into the game but its not because of these stupid chants.

Many Devils fans are being offended as well. Always remember that.

I never said I wanted to do such a thing. I would never assault, threaten, personally attack, shout profanities, or throw anything at any other fans. But I would do my best to make sure they have a HORRIBLE experience otherwise in all things related to the game itself and make them never want to come back. These people didn't come to our building to play parcheesi and hold hands. They came here to root for the other team in OUR BUILDING. I will absolutely go out of my way to rub it in as much as possible when our team does something good. When we score and there are fans of the other team sitting around me, I will make sure to yell "You suck!" right in their general direction. I'll go to high-five fans of the other team as they leave early because they're getting whooped. And I will yell "You can have it!" during the Canadian anthem. I'd expect the same if I went into their arena.

I don't know how you compare Goose Island to Budweiser? If anything it's a company like Sam Adams. It's not even sold in every liquor store around by me, only a couple stores have it. I've also seen Beck's, Bass and Newcastle which are great beers

Becks is alright.  However in Germany outside of Bremen it is considered lesser beer they send over to the Americans to drink.

Bass and Newcastle are just beers I don't care for.  Nothing against them, just do not like them.

Goose Island is owned by the same brewing conglomerate InBev as Budweiser as well as a bunch of others.  It is mass-produced swill.  While Sam Adams is still considered craft beer and straddling the line with that, they are still light years better than anything InBev produces and just comparing the two is a crime.

I am actually emabarassed for you right now if you really do those things.

How about 'Respect'?  You can have a loud and rabid fanbase & show respect to others. We shouldn't have to stoop to the bottom of the barrel just to have an identity as a fanbase.  The future of Devils fans will be with the 5-12 year olds.  Hopefully the parents of those kids don't stop coming to games the next 5 years because of the bottom dwelling, i pay so I can say whatever I want mentality.  And yes, I wish our fans sang the US anthem with enthusiasm the way we clap for the US troop who comes to our game.

Obviously I don't pick out people who are just sitting there quietly enjoying the game and kids are off limits. But if they're high-fiving or if they start celebrating or yell anything anti-Devils, they're gonna hear it. Basically, if you stay low-key and just watch, I'm not gonna give you any sh!t. But don't expect me to sit on my hands if you come into The Rock and start jumping up and down in glee when your team is beating mine.

Agreed and agreed. The Rangers Suck chant is awesome when we play them, but when we're not, what's the point? I've mentioned this before, but I couldn't believe how many people tried to start it up during the SCF last year against LA. Also, if you can't whistle too good, please don't even try it at all.

I liked the idea of the Diablos section as our arena has had the reputation of being very quiet, but I must agree that some of the chants could use some improvement. Not to disrespect anyone in that section, but some of the chants really are overkill as DevsMan suggested.

Well I do agree the selection isn't fantastic, I would love to see some NJ beers like Flying Fish or Riverhorse. Maybe even bring in some Brooklyn Lager, Magic Hat, Harpoon. That would be great

Not sure if this is directed at me since i do start the chant from time to time but if you want to go back to those dead quiet days, please send a letter to the devils organization since they went out of their way to support how much passion we bring to each game from the days of missing the playoffs when none of the clowns in any section made a peep. We formed to take the matter to our own hands and start the crowd up much like a fight and all the players have nothing but positive things to say about what they feel.

Btw, I never heard the Diablos do the spelled chant more than once. I hear it from other parts in different periods. We only do it once usually, and do the usual let's go devils throughout whenever they need a pick me up. Kill chant is obviously the trademark that is just the most badass. You can hear it in every highlight and every broadcast even if they try to mute the crowd noise.
