Name an NHL captain less skilled than Bryce Salvador

Kind of a spin-off of the other thread. I tried to think of one, past or present, and couldn't do it. A captain is supposed to be a leader, but let's be honest, its also supposed to be one of your better players. Not your worst.

Can anyone name a captain that was crappier ours?

Craig Rivet.  Dave Andreychuk in his final NHL season.  I think Gary Roberts was a captain somewhere when he was terrible too.  Lyle Odelein might've been a captain in Columbus, I forget.  Those are just off the top of my head, I think there are other candidates, especially on expansion teams (was Brad Marsh Ottawa's first captain or was it Laurie Boschman?)

Problem is that we're not an expansion team.

My point wasn't that Salvador has declined, I dont think he was ever good enough to warrant the C. Most of the other guys mentioned were good at some time, even if their skills deteriorated by the time they were a captain.

I mean seriously, did someone say Mark Messier is worse than Bryce Salvador?

I did and what?

And that's perhaps one of the most inaccurate statements I ever heard. You can't possibly argue that Salvador was ever more talented than Messier ever was. He's the second leading scorer of all time.

I'll say again, I'm not talking about guys losing skill over time due to age.

Exactly. A team decided they'd rather have Cam Janssen than our captain. Something is wrong with that equation.

Yeah, because he would be the only player from his home city to play there, and that team was desperate for things to attract fans.  Lou wisely saved a draft pick that way - Salvador was probably worth a 2nd rounder.

Another thread that exhibits how lost the majority of fans are on this forum. Should there be a correlation between skill and one receiving the captaincy? Yes. Should it be the cause? No

Over the past 25 years look at the winners of the Cup, I can think of 2 to 3 instances where the most skilled player was the captain of the team.
