Devils/Prudential Center Making 'Huge' Announcement Tomorrow a

trailblazer

Recommended Posts

This is just copied and pasted what I put in the attendance thread a short time ago:

Right now the rumors are:

1) Devils are going to host an upcoming NHL All-Star game (I think this is the most likely thing as they have been owned one since 2007 when the Rock opened)

2) World Series of Poker is going to be coming to the Rock (very unlikely as I think it has to be held in a casino)

3) Sixers are moving to the Rock thus they are "all-in" the arena that our new owners now run (I think this is pretty unlikely)

4) Major sponsorship deal with a either a physical or online casino (I see this as 2nd most likely)

It definitely has something to do with a PartyPoker sponsorship/partnership of some sort

I'm not by any means a Sixers Fan, but I would get immense pleasure out of stealing Philly's basketball team.

A move would make absolutely no sense whatsoever, but man..it would be sweet.

Yeah apparently I heard through others that the Devils started following them either on Twitter or Instagram or both.  I give the all star game a 50% chance of happening with the party poker having 40% chance of happening, sixers moving 8% chance and world series of poker being 2% chance of happening.

Mike Sielski@MikeSielskinow

Can also confirm that #Sixers-#Devils presser isn't about on-court/on-ice matters. Sixers aren't playing any games in Newark, for instance.

Mike Sielski@MikeSielski18m

Can confirm the #Sixers-#Devils press conference tomorrow is NOT about any potential relocation of either franchise.

This guy is a writer for the Philly Inquirer.  I'm leaning towards a gaming partnership/advertising thing.

So what would a gaming partnership/advertising thing involve?

A lot of signs, commercials (like we don't see enough of that online casino commercial) and probably something at the Rock will be named after them.  Either the former Verizon Tower or the Fire Lounge being my best guesses.

I like poker but that is a bit of a letdown from a "huge" or "major" announcement.

I used to watch televised poker tournaments to help put myself to sleep at night.  I really can't see how people enjoy that especially when most tournaments allow the gamblers to get away being dressed up like the Unabomber.  Hell there is even a gambler whose nickname is the Unabomber.

Ah okay I see, thanks.

No thank you, unless a better contract is a guarantee.

There are going to be very few announcements that wouldn't be leaked by the media if it involved something like an All-Star game or what not. If it is sponsorship related, that's big for the franchise. To be able to spend money as the cap goes up, they need some big partnerships. And, they'll have to hype it as much as possible for that sponsor.

I'm sure everyone will be annoyed, though.

Their FB post says "We aren't bluffing when we say there's a huge announcement coming"

I'd say use of "Bluffing" as a pun is the answer right there

Yup, it looks like it is indeed a sponsorship with a casino.

Dammit I was really hoping for the all-star game.  Oh well.

Not related to the poker announcement but maybe something else Harris will mention to reporters afterwards:

https://twitter.com/NetsDaily/status/420959216682405888

"Told Josh Harris owner of Devils, 76ers and The Rock will be announcing acquisition of an overseas soccer team tomorrow, NOT a 76er move."

Looks like Josh Harris finally bought English Championship side Charlton Athletic.

Ignore pre-edit: Had Oldham on my mind from this morning.

Probably and official announcement about those new owner people. From TGs post:

Andy Goldstein (Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President), Brad Shron (Executive Vice President and General Counsel) and Jim Leonard (Senior Vice President of Community Investment) have been added to the staff and will be based in Newark, assuming duties primarily for the Devils and Prudential Center, and, as necessary, the Sixers.

Good find, and I got some interesting insight from my brother who's in marketing; he had a few theories. Apparently, it could all be related, in such a way that Harris/Devils/76ers will be working with a sponsorship from PartyPoker. The big deal here is that PartyPoker is under the umbrella company Bwin.

Bwin has a number of HUGE sponsorship deals throughout European soccer. We're talking about Real Madrid, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, and Olympique Marseille, creme de la creme, HUGE MONEY:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bwin.Party_Digital_Entertainment#Sponsorship

That might key into the soccer end of things, with Harris/Devils/76ers corporation possibly gaining ownership of the soccer team they've been trying to get, with a sponsorship deal already set up. Seems like Bwin doesn't have a big sponsorship deal with any teams in the English leagues, outside of a digital agreement with Manchester United.

What all this means is a ton of money, huge influx of cash for the group, which I'd imagine is only good news for our future and the viability of our team as the cap goes up. Just a guess though, at this point...

Thanks for the insight DJ Eco! I always see Bwin when I watch European matches (especially MUFC) but never knew about the PartyPoker connection.

It will be interesting to see how Harris handles Charlton Athletic. Currently close to the relegation zone in the Championship (1 division below the Premier League) but it wasn't too long ago they were in the top flight (2006-07). Talk about potentially owning 3 teams in 3 of the biggest leagues.

These 'major' announcements always disappoint. My first reaction was that the Sixers would play a preseason game in Newark. If its not that, its something along the lines of both teams acquiring a new food vendor or something woefully underwhelming.

All Star game is out

Exactly

No reason for them to trump this up like we are announcing the signing of some amazing Russian hockey player to a lifetime deal worth over $100M.
