Devils/Prudential Center Making 'Huge' Announcement Tomorrow a

trailblazer

Recommended Posts

Just finished watching the press conference.  Here are a few of my observations:

1.  Scott O'Neill - didn't appear too confident in what he was delivering in terms of strategic advantages of having PartyPoker be a partner of the Devils and Sixers other than it "taps into 60 million registered poker players" in the USA.

2.  PartyPoker CEO (from Germany I believe) - couldn't get much of a feel from him but essentially I think that the Devils/Sixers were the only teams with "balls" to actually come out and allow a gambling company to partner up with them.  I get the sense that he's hoping that this partnership will eventually blossom into something big, and IF, regulators allow, will eventually allow the Devils/Sixers to be the "gateway" for legalized sports betting.

3.  Special guests - added absolutely ZERO value to this press conference.  Guests were your usual suspects - Daneyko / Driver / Marshall / Dowd

4.  No Lou Lamoriello at the podium or in camera view

Here's my snapshot:

1.  The Devils/Sixers will become the NASCAR-type sponsorship boards for their respective leagues

2.  More degenerate fans will gravitate towards the Devils and Sixers - because essentially, gamblers are degenerates.  I know, I live with one.

3.  Lou Lamoriello's days are numbered because I can't see him agreeing to this type of commercial partnership with his beloved franchise

4.  The Devils will win nothing - because gambling is simply bad Karma.

My two cents...

All gamblers are degenerates? Bad karma? You gonna tell us their astrological signs next?

on ice party poker ads? blah.

it will be between the blue lines. Currently we have PSE&G, Ford, Amerihealth, and Prudential. Prudential is kind of redundant since well, it's the Prudential center and it says Prudential just a few inches over at center ice...so that's where Party Poker likely goes.

I don't play poker, I find the TV poker tournaments near Golf levels of boring. I'm fine with this since it's more $$$ in the Devils pocket. It really isn't a "game changing" relationship. They're just going to have ads around the arena like any other sponsor and nobody will notice much or care.

If that wasn't all a joke you're a complete tool

Regardless of joke or not, I am a tool, yes.

No moreso, however, than you most likely are.  You're probably the first douche that goes out and buys a NJ Devils/Party Poker trucker hat.

Well, this is embarrassing.  What's next?  Players figure skating during intermissions?  A dunk tank over the goal for when one hits the post?

Pathetic.

we already have Devils dancers.

Believe me in 2 weeks we'll all block partypoker out like any other sponsor. Can you name all the advertisements on the Prudential Center dashers? I don't have the faintest idea. I didn't even know who advertised on the ice before checking.

They're no different than PSE&G, or Jersey Boys (HEY FANS IF YOU CAN ANSWER THIS QUESTION YOU'LL WIN 2 TICKETS TO JERSEYYYY BOOOOOYYYSSS!)

Please do us a favor and spare us the melancholy bias bullsh!t next time. What a ridiculous post.

So I suppose you're just as hard on teams and sports sponsored by beer companies?

whoopity-do! we have PartyPoker! all our problems are answered. What are they gonna do, make a poker room overlooking the ice now where even more people can pay for a ticket into the arena and not actually watch the game? Like the goal bar. You have to buy a ticket to get in the arena, then you go to the Goal Bar, where you can't take your drink out, must be consumed within the Goal Bar by law, can't take it to your seat. Then you are sitting at the arena watching the game on tv, when you could be in your seat in the stands watching it live right in front of you! Sorry, I'd much rather get the real experience, in a stadium seat, eating arena food and (overpriced) but semi-decent beer, keep your sushi, fillet Mignon and skyboxes thanks.

Along the same lines, get the fvck over it. They're a sponsor, a rich one at that, nothing more, nothing less. How the fvck is this embarrassing, and why the hell do you act like it's a big deal.

Only on this forum could you find people to complain about finding a rich sponsor for a previously cash-strapped team. Talk about making a negative out of a positive (or at least, a non issue)

Because you're a die hard fan. If this agreement gets more casual fans in the door, who cares?

Totally agree with you. After JVB burned so many bridges with sponsors over the last 4-5 years this is major and only helps the team financially.

At worst people should just be meh about it instead of whining.

I cant comprehend how people are mad/upset about this,  Yes its online poker, but still people who are paying the devils lots of $$ to be a sponser.  Now that the devils have $$, they hopefully can spend some of it on quality players.

No matter what some people still are gonna hate these owners bc they took away the "you suck" chant and immature people "cant have fun anymore".

and the poker commercials already began

I realize gambling is going to be legalized in the near future, but does anyone else see potential conflict with a sports team having an interest in a gambling company or vice-versa?

This is the only valid complaint yet. It straddles the line because they're a sponsor, so it's not like anyone stands to make more money if the Devils win or lose, it's all the same. If they wanted to get real corrupt, I guess they could have the Devils throw games and then they set odds that would make them tons of cash. However, I think that's unlikely with LL at the helm.

The line is they can't promote SPORTS gambling.  This is poker.

Nice to come in here and see some sanity on NJDevs.. This whole thing is getting killed on HF by butthurt morons who care more about a goal song than seeing this team get healthy financially

This deal is just fantastic for the franchise and I hope it brings in some more sponsors who also want to jump on board.. Scott O'Neil is supposedly the best in the biz at this and it's awesome that Harris went out and got him from MSG to work on his teams and arena

Probably because the Devils touted this as a "huge" announcement, so fans were expecting something big and exciting, and to be honest this isn't very big or very exciting from a fan perspective.

It's great to see the team get sponsorship money, but to build up so much hype for an announcement that has little to no actual benefit for the fans is annoying. I know that Harris and O'Neill need to build a lot of buzz for PartyPoker in order to warrant whatever ridiculous sum of money they're being paid, but toying with the fans and dangling a "huge announcement" in front of them only to let them down with a boring corporate sponsorship announcement is pretty lame.

Where was the press conference when Ford bought their board and ice ads? Or when PNC Bank signed on? There wasn't one, because the fans don't give a sh!t and there's no need for a press conference for a sponsorship. But because PartyPoker is a gigantic company that is going to be pumping a boatload of cash into the organization, Harris and O'Neill have to kiss their ass and generate attention for the PartyPoker brand.

I'm thrilled the Devils have new, financially-stable, business-savvy owners who are trying their best to make sure the team has the money it needs...but I'm not a fan of the way this whole thing was handled.

Would it have killed them to say, "The Devils are proud to unveil a HUGE new sponsorship deal this Thursday! Stay tuned for details...we're not bluffing when we say we're going all-in!" instead of "We aren’t bluffing when we say there’s a huge announcement coming from the #NJDevils and Prudential Center tomorrow at 4 p.m.! What do you think the big news is?"

That's just misleading and playing with the fans' emotions all for nothing. Asking them to guess what the big news is? Come on, this is not big news for the average fan.

STANDING O

The Devils just signed a deal with PartyPoker?!?!?  NO WAY!  I was beyond excited after the press conference when we locked up Kovy. (isn't it ironic?)  Anxiously awaited the signing of Jaromir Jagr.  I thought I was excited for the Stadium Series game....But this PartyPoker announcement is AMAZING!

As JWomp points out, dangling an upcoming announcement to the fan base via social media to announce this is pathetic and sad really.  Something I would expect a D-II college to do.

The Devils organization outside of the actual ON-ICE hockey is definitely one of the worst in the league, hands down.

How much of this is solely because of Lou, who can know for sure.

But...

- Marketing:  Do we have a marketing department?!?

- Season Tickets Dept:  "The Fan Experience Team" for the most part are not so helpful.  The ticket policies/restrictions/rules/regulations combined with the team failing to deliver on promised Season Ticket Holder perks, leaves them with a black eye for sure.

Hopefully one day they can get it right.

Why anyone is annoyed by this announcement is beyond me. But, why the Devils think we actually give a sh!t also makes no sense.

Glad they got a big sponsor, but like others have said, they should have not tried to make this seem like such a big deal from a fan perspective.

We're Devils fans.  We complain if the toilet paper in bathroom stalls is 2 ply instead of 1 ply.

I am glad the team is making some mega bucks, and are making mutually beneficial partnerships.  I am all for it.

However, do not send out stupid messages falsely leading the fans to believe something we actually care about will be revealed to the world....only to announce a sponsorship deal.
