I believe they are going to make their first cuts after this game, then the second batch after tomorrow's intrasquad game. I read the third and final cuts could come after Tuesday's scrimmage against the CIS All-Stars.

Swiss-A:

HC Lugano lost to EV Zug 5-3

Mauro Jörg (RW): E

WJC Pre-Tournament:

Canada lost to Sweden 5-3

Scott Wedgewood came into relief midway through the 2nd replacing Visentin who gave up 4 goals. Wedgewood didn't surrender a goal but I have no idea how many shots he faced. The 5th Swedish goal was an empty netter.

USA defeated Slovakia 5-0

Jon Merrill played but didn't register a goal or an assist. That's all I got.

Monday 12/26

World Junior Hockey Championship:

Canada defeated Finland 8-1

Scott Wedgewood (G): DNP (Visentin stopped 24 of 25 shots)

USA defeated Denmark 11-3

Jon Merrill (D): Assist, +2, 2 PIM (Hooking) - From the few times I flipped to the game during commercials, I noticed he was getting PP time. Announcers mentioned he didn't look out of place at all which is encouraging for his first game action this year.

Wedgewood living dream that idol Brodeur never did

"Everybody says goalies are weird, but I think you need to have a different mindset than people in other positions," said the Devils' third-round pick (84th overall) in 2010. "You have to be strong mentally. I think I can handle pressure really well. I can take heat."

Article talks about watching Brodeur growing up and that he didn't play goalie until age 11.

World Junior Championship:

USA lost to Czech Republic 5-2

Jon Merrill (D): Assist (PP), -3, 2 PIM (Tripping), 4 Shots - Set up 1st US goal but wasn't eligible for an assist. Looked good on the PP. One of his minuses happened when he was left out to dry on a 2 on 1. The second that lead to the Czech's tying the game at 2 happened when his outlet pass was intercepted by Hertl. The last minus was on the empty net goal. It was a day of highs and lows for him.

Quotes from NJ Devils Scouting Director David Conte:

"I watched the game on television," Conte told NHL.com. "He did what we expected. He was focused and athletic. That's a tough game to play because he was getting sporadic pressure but he did very well with it. Now, I don't know if he'll get a shutout every night or notch an assist but his demeanor was what you expect of a guy that's had as much experience as he's had."

"Each time you talk about these young guys, none of them are actually (NHL ready) … they're in transit," Conte said. "To be (NHL ready), you need to have accomplishments to set a foundation of confidence to move forward and they need to meet the challenges. Last season, Maxime [Clermont] and Scott met the challenges and led their teams to playoff wins that, maybe, they shouldn't have won.

"But that's just one kudo. They have to continue to build, just as Marty did, just as Mike Dunham did, just as Corey Schwab did, Chris Terreri and Sean Burke. The beauty of hockey is you're only as good as yesterday, and every player that understands that is well ahead. If he's looking for the destination, he better worry more about the journey."

Tuesday 1/3

World Junior Championship Semifinal:

Canada lost to Russia 6-5

Scott Wedgewood (G): 9 Saves on 13 Shots in 28:48 - Left after 4th goal that also had a huge collision. Looked shaken up a bit, hopefully he's not injured, looked like a rough blow to the head. Wedgewood deserved better tonight. First 3 goals go in off Ryan Murray (CAN) and then Canada gets caught in a bad line change and Kuznetsov gets a breakaway and scores.

World Junior Championship Relegation:

USA defeated Latvia 12-2

Jon Merrill (D): 2 Assists (1 PP), +4, 2 PIM (Cross Checking), 3 Shots - Stat padding, baby
