Devils Pride 26
Get rid of Salvador and volchenkov, sign Stasny to a long term deal and sign Brian Gionta to a 2 year Lou-like deal with a low-ish cap hit, get rid of Zubrus and re-up Schneider. I'll jizz myself to sleep. Probably will get flak for saying to bring back Gionta but I agree. I checked out his advanced stats a while ago in comparison to Zubrus earlier this year and he blew him away. No one would be expecting him to score 40 goals probably not even 20. But I like the idea of gionta on a short deal
Colorado Rockies 1976
Yup. Long time ago, but apparently it didn't end on the best of terms. Had to do with Herb Brooks more than the Devils (publicly called Stastny's contract a heist)...Brooks was gone after one season.
hystyk28
We will get cap relief from no Marty or Jagr. Didn't know Vrbata was a UFA. That's the guy they need. Well at least one of the 2 they need.
Muevelos
Stastny isn't a 30 goal scorer, and never was. I'd take him in a heart beat, but 7 million, did I hear for a low 20 scorer, from a team that's not offensively challenged like us.
Colorado Rockies 1976
Yeah MB, Peter Stastny played here in the early 90's for a couple years. In fact I used to work with a dude who went to elementary school with Paul in Verona. Came over at the deadline for defenseman Craig Wolanin in 1990. Wolanin was apparently pissed...it was one of those deals that didn't get done until after the deadline had passed, so he went to practice thinking he was still a Devil, but was told shortly after he skated onto the practice rink. Sadly, Stastny was on the decline pretty quickly by the time he got here...his Devils numbers don't look too bad until you realize they came during Live Puck, and especially when you compare them to his in-his-prime numbers. Once he hit 32, he was no longer the same player.
Bartholomew Hunt
Callahan would be a NIGHTMARE No he wouldnt. Top player that would fit our system and like I said, would automatically become our best player the second he walks in the door. And that "hes only got a few years left" is bullsh!t. No validity behind it whatsoever. That what the sour grapes people tried saying about parise and theres ZERO evidence that holding true. GO. GET. CALLY. PWW
Would love to see the Devils go after Vrbata. Sniper who shoots a ton and is very durable. Just wish he was a LW so he could be the missing piece on the Jagr/Zajac line. He's definitely a skill player that the Devils sorely need. I remember feeling bad for Wolanin having to go to Quebec because of how bad they were.

If Callahan is your best player, you are not going to win many games. He is not a top player, and he never really was, and now he's on the decline. In addition, since GMs love thinking players like Callahan are top players, he will be massively overpaid. Parise's decline will begin - he still hasn't matched his numbers from 08-09 and 09-10. He's holding up better than I thought he would so far, but he's only played 100 games so far. Talk to me when he's played 300. CarpathianForest
Jokinen and Michalek are definitely the type of affordable UFAs that would work on this team.

Good point GMs love thinking people like callahan are good players. So the national hockey league general managers are more than likely stupid and you've probably got a better grasp on personnel around the league................. Youre right we dont need a callahan/lucic/simmonds type player because that doesnt fit our system at all. He would be a terrible fit. Hemsky though, he'd fit right into cycling the puck with board battles.
Devils Pride 26
Callahan is a poor mans Parise who is going to make similar money I would bet. Those grinder type players never age well. What years and money would you give Callahan?
Chuck the Duck
Callahan is a poor mans Parise who is going to make similar money I would bet. Those grinder type players never age well. What years and money would you give Callahan? Nothing near what the Rags already offered him. He is a heart and soul guy that is a born leader, but he is not worth anywhere near the money someone (I'm look at you Terry Pegula) will likely throw at him this offseason. He gets hurt too often based upon his style of play which makes a long term deal very risky. Plus, he doesn't fill our biggest need which is a goal scorer. Stastny would be great, but I just don't see him coming here.

If Lou is going to keep the team the same and add a few small pieces - opposed to shaking it up with a big trade - we have money to dish out on a forward and Stastny would be my top target
RizzMB30
Agreed, I don't really see Stasny coming here, or Callahan for that matter. Vrbata tho? I could see that, another Czech (Score! ALL THE CZECHS) and he'd be a good under the radar pickup. It couldnt be very long term though either, the dude is in his early 30s at least. Devilsfan118
The minute Callahan left New York, Richards went to the media and spoke about how lacking a leading Callahan actually was. So this whole 'true leader' crap should be taken with a grain of salt, at best. Hank is more of a leader on that squad than anyone else. As far as I'm concerned, Callahan isn't worth half the contract he'll get this summer from some stupid GM. Henrik "I bang my stick against the goal and the boards when we lose and cry about it in the postgame" Lundqvist? He leads the Rangers (to a good amount of undeserved wins) with his play, but is not a "leader" at all.

As far as I'm concerned, Callahan isn't worth half the contract he'll get this summer from some stupid GM. Richards' comments were completely blown out of proportion. Also, goalies are never team leaders, odd as it might sound. That's why you only had one goalie named captain in recent memory (Luongo) and it didn't last very long. Otherwise, "leadership" is overrated, especially if you're talking about what you would pay for free agent. Sure, you have to be a little wary of someone that has the reputation of being a cancer, but you can go grab a "leader" for a bargain basement price if that's really what you're looking for.
