DeBoer would welcome having Schneider and Brodeur as Devils’ two goa

It's cool that Brodeur gets to name the starter of the team, but how about Pete doing it?  How about Pete saying 'Well, Cory established himself as the starting goalie, but you need that other guy, you can't just get by on one guy in this league, and we'd love to have Brodeur back in that role, who's better than him in that spot?  It's a coach's dream.'  Did Pete ever say that Schneider was the starter last year?  Would he say it this year if Brodeur were brought back?

We didn't hear that.  Instead we heard a coach talking about a conversation and once again bending over backwards to give accolades to a guy.

Okay, fair enough, but it wasn't Brodeur making the decision, it was him conceding that he was ready to move on and understands the situation, there's a big difference there.  I don't have any real evidence of DeBoer saying Cory IS the starter, but Deboer has said this,

"I think he's ready to be a starter. I think he wants to be a starter. I don't think there's any secret about that. We're excited to have him as a part of our organization here."

I don't see the problem with a coach simply respecting the history, which is what Brodeur is as a starter.... nothing more than Devil's history at this point.  I understand the fear of Marty coming back and getting a lot of games next year, but I don't understand the fear of Marty as a backup, that's all.  Yeah, cause for concern, blah blah blah.

Didn't Marty say he wants to play more next year than he did this year? I don't think he'd be happy with 15-20 starts. I think he's looking for 35-40.

He did say that. He also said this team is Cory's now, and that the "Devils are in good hands with Schneids". So if he comes back, I think it's because no one else wants him and Lou can't bear to see him in that position. I hope Lou keeps looking at the big picture. Signing Marty just gives us another year of what we just had.

He didn't bend over backwards for anything.  I haven't listened to the interview, but it seems to me that he was asked about Marty (who is always a story line, especially when it comes to Canadian media covering the Devils) and he said nice things about him.  I can forgive him for not going into a five minute discussion about the differences in save percentages and saying that Marty is the reason the team didn't make the playoffs.  If anything, you can interpret his comments as a way of justifying his decision to give Marty more starts than he deserved, after, upon reflection, realizing it was a huge blunder.

That said, I really do not want Marty back next year.  There are other goalies to play backup that are better than him (probably much better than him) at this point, and there will always be pressure to give Marty more starts than an average backup goalie should be getting in the first place.  It's an unneeded distraction.  Plus, it would actually be better for Marty.  Maybe he gets a decent number of starts with another team, and has a chance to prove everyone wrong.  I'd actually feel great for him if he managed to do that.

Brodeur is ready to move on, the trouble is there is probably nowhere to move on to.  He is 42.  His team has missed the playoffs in 3 of the last 4 years.  It's not hard to look at those teams and say hmmm what's the common denominator?  Bad offense, yes, but also bad goaltending.  If DeBoer isn't willing to name Schneider the starter, well then we go through a year where one bad start from Schneider gives him the hook and Brodeur plays 30+ games again.  Look, there's a very good chance that Brodeur is an .880-.890 goalie next year.  He's old.  He cannot recover on saves - if he commits, that's it, he's done for.

Now again, DeBoer may be playing the Good Cop to Lou's Bad Cop in this scenario, but the organization has bungled this pretty much every way possible.

There is little to no chance that Cory doesn't play 60+ games next year (barring injury).

I'm not sure about that - he didn't prove this year he was capable of being a starter.  Until a guy's a starter, you just don't know how he will do.

Marty is coming back because his ego can't handle anything else and Lou has too much loyalty to let him go. Lou is also stuck in a 1995-2003 time warp and feels the need to keep signing the same types of utility players, chief among them...ex-Devils. Kovalchuk was an abberation. We won't see such a move happen again anytime soon. That move was so out of Lou's element.

Face it fellas...until Lou calls it quits we will continue to sing the same song and dance every season. Uninspired moves, retaining past their prime vets, and drafting players who don't make any imoact.

Just accept what is.... it will all be good in the end... accept mediocrity and drink the kool-aid. Lol

Good, because the Kovalchuk deal was by far the worst thing Lou had ever done, contract-wise, and he has gotten bailed out spectacularly by Kovalchuk leaving.

Lou told Shanahan he couldn't play, even after he signed him.  He bought out White.  He told Brylin to go screw.  He bought out Pandolfo.  He's made plenty of good moves over the last 5 years - just that this goaltending thing is going to be his bugaboo until Brodeur retires or leaves.

I was speaking in terms of Kovy's offensive skill, not his bad contract. He bought out White after White was way past his prime and moved around like he had cement in his skates, same for Brylin and Pando. So...those weren't great moves by Lou. They were just necessary ones that nedeed to be made.

I'm still reeling from his terrible contracts to Rolston, Mogilny, Malakhov, and McGillis.

we have, what? 18 back to backs? promise marty 16 of those,  its his best NHL offer by far.  take it or leave it marty

Why even make the offer though?  The Devils will most likely be in the same spot they were this year, where there is no room for pissing away points...and they'll essentially be doing just that by dressing one of the worst statistical goalies in the NHL.  Even if it was for 16 games, it just doesn't make any sense.  It's time to move on as a franchise.

Agree with this...basically it seems like there's a "Well, we know he's not good anymore, but if he's not good in 15-20 games as opposed to 30+, then it's OK." mentality with some.  What's wrong with having a clear #1 who's good, with a backup that also has a shot to be good?

2 of these contracts cost the Devils absolutely nothing - McGillis and Mogilny ended up with 0 cost to NJ except for money, which they were obviously flush with at the time (they spent the most money in the league in 2005-06 and 2006-07).  Indeed, since Mogilny was on IR, most of his contract was likely taken care of by insurance.  White was a perfectly cromulent player in his final season here - puck went the right way when he was on the ice.  Brylin went on to play 4 more years in the Russian league, Pandolfo was still in the NHL in 2012-13 somehow.  Point is, he got rid of players who'd been loyal to the team after they'd passed their usefulness.

I am not sure what you are referencing here. Surely, nothing I have said.

This hurts. This season sucked, but I was hoping it was the end. That we were going to move forward as a franchise after a year of putting up with Marty aging ungracefully. I was even hoping we would begin to recover from losing Zach and Kovy in back to back seasons. I know that the 2 things aren't connected, but after spending much of this season agonizing because of and with Marty, I find it tough to bring him back. The end is going to be bad. It already is. Time to rip the bandaid off.

this does not mean that brodeur is coming back.. i think this whole thing was more so for the media type of deal. However personally i do think marty will end up coming back here again next season, i just dont see anywhere else for him to go no one is going to offer him any type of better deal .. just hope he ends up coming back on a much smaller role as a back up. we need cory to re sign his contract and that should be a main target before even paying any attention to brodeur.
