Kovy Making News...for the wrong reasons

At least guys like Ovechkin and Malkin stayed on the ice and tried to stop their teammates from following a pretty sh!tty example by setting a much better one.  Won't stop some from saying, "Yep, typical Russians, figures."

I feel like Kovalchuk has always been a poor sport so this doesn't really surprise me. It's a heat of the moment type thing so I won't hold it against him. But I think it speaks to a lack of maturity compared to guys like Ovechkin or Malkin. Ovi really should have been captain.

EDIT: My first sentence is meant as more of a matter of fact statement than an insult. I think to get to that level you need to be ultra-competitive and sometimes that comes out in ways that are unattractive to people. Kovy was one of the more competitive players NJ ever had in my opinion, and doubly so when it comes to representing his country.

Like devils102 said, it's a heat of the moment type thing. Incredibly stupid and ill-informed but I see it this way: Kovalchuk's always been an emotional "heart and soul" type player, he was that way here too; he played with fire and passion. Only here, it manifested itself in a clutch goal, a big shift, a timely fight, a big hit, a furious rush of the puck 1 minute into overtime, etc.

Being in Russia for 2 years, don't underestimate the kind of Kool-Aid he's been made to drink. So that fire and passion manifested itself negatively, and embarrassingly.

I still think we're missing him, or at least a player of that ilk. We don't have that fire on this team and we definitely don't have that skill. He would've been the ultimate warrior captain for the Devils, don't get it twisted. No one was as driven and had that fire in their eyes the way Kovalchuk did while he was here, not even captain Zach. There's very few players that do, even elite players. Ovechkin did in Game 7 of last round. Malkin doesn't, Kessel doesn't, etc... It's an intangible, but in this isolated case it was a negative.

From the article:  "Following the game, the Russian team stayed out for the medal ceremony and individual award announcements, but left the surface prior to ‘O Canada’ being played."  I don't think that was heat of the moment, let alone what Titans just said.  He is a pouty baby but that doesn't change that he is a good player that I wish were on this team.
