  1. No to Toffoli, for reasons that I stated previously. He can score but doesn't bring much else, is too slow to really jell with this group of forwards, and the Devils need to become more physical. There's cap space, but looks like the Devils are going to take on a considerable cap hit if he lands a big fish to play goal; if that's Saros or Ullmark, he'll have to pay them beyond next season. Also Luke will already be up for an extension as a RFA after next year, and not sure what Dawson's next deal will look like (if he's not dealt as part of a package for a goalie). Guess he might take a two-year bridge deal and hope he plays well enough to snag a payday in a few years, because this year hurt his leverage. Yeah not sure what Fitz will do with the goalies in house, but suffice it to say that Allen looks like the only one who will go into next season as part of the plans for the 2024-25 New Jersey Devils. Daws or Schmid are only getting called up if someone gets hurt, and I say "or" because I suspect at least one of them will be gone after this season.
  2. FWIW, the Devils still have a game against the Flyers (Game 81)...hopefully it's both meaningful AND doesn't turn into a three-pointer. And the Flyers already just lost a "soft" game against the Canadiens. They also lost 5-2 to the Caps earlier this month. One thing I've definitely learned from trying to predict based on strength of schedule for MANY sports through the years is that it definitely doesn't always work out as expected. The Flyers are also just 11-14-4 over their last 29 games, and haven't won so much as two in a row over their last 20 (7-9-4). If there's a team that looks like it can absolutely spit the bit against what should be an "easier" part of the schedule, it's them. Doesn't help their cause that Ersson (who's handling much of their goaltending) has an .880 save% since 1/20 (24 GP). Of course, the question is can the Devils actually get THEIR sh!t together enough to be able to take advantage if the Flyers continue to be so meh? We find out starting tonight.
  3. Oh this isn’t me making a case for the Devils finding a way…this is me showing how much of a longshot this really is. They have almost NO margin for error. The fan in me will keep hoping, the realist is me knows their chances are minimal at best.
  4. 3 points out with a big asterisk…Caps will have two games in hand again. They face the Bruins tomorrow night…hopefully that matchup goes as “expected.” If the Devils win tonight, they’ll be four points behind the Flyers with the same number of games played. Considering how this season has gone, that’s about as much as I ever could’ve hoped for.
  5. The Devils effectively are in the same position as the 1987-88 Devils were. As Sean Burke said (paraphrasing): "We were in it, but not REALLY in it. We had to win just about every game." Devils might be able to give up three points absolute max, if they want to make it in. Only realistic berths are Metro3 (Flyers) and WC2 (Caps). Quick math: if the Flyers go 4-4 over their final 8, Devils have to go 7-2 to tie them; due to more wins, the Devils win that tiebreaker. If the Caps go 5-5 over their final 10, the Devils have to go 7-1-1; same deal as the Flyers, all the Devils would have to do is tie them, and they would win the tiebreaker based on wins. Of course, the Red Wings and Isles are currently in better position, but too much time to go to make too much out of that. Basically, Devils need to go 7-1-1, maybe 7-2-0 at absolute worst.
  6. I don't think that's necessarily the case because if the Devils did somehow sneak in and then got absolutely waxed by their first-round opponent, I find it hard to believe that Fitz would just blindly stick with Groan. But the key word in your post is "miracle". We're still about four days away from knowing if any miracles are in the cards. Devils have to beat the Sabres and Pens, and continue to get help. Any conversations about miracle runs could fully be dead by the end of the Pens game.
  7. Devils really just gotta keep winning damned near every game. They got some help tonight but they still need so much more. Montreal beating the Flyers was a serious break for the Devils. Gotta taking fvcking advantage already.
  8. No way Torts get fired. That team was expected to do NOTHING this season. He did a hell of a job just to keep them in it this long.
  9. One last ENG for the Canadiens, Flyers about to lose 4-1.
  10. Caps lose. Flyers and Red Wings about to lose. Seriously Devils, how much more fvcking help do you WANT?! Flyers finally score but down two with 1:01 to go.
  11. Can only ask for so much help. At least the Devils still have a game against them, though not until the final game of the year. Montreal with an empty-netter to make it 3-0. Have no idea how the Flyers didn’t score…they owned much of that third period.
  12. Canadiens practically trying to hand the Flyers a goal over the last minute, but Primeau somehow bails them out.
  13. Canadiens barely survive that penalty kill. Flyers really taking it to them this period, but just not finding the net. This time a disallowed goal for the Canadiens (high stick). All three disallowed goals have been legit.
  14. Caps now losing 5-1. Flyers about to go on another power play. They’ve been turning it up a notch. Canadiens only have 12 SOG for the game but still up by two.
  15. Flyers about to lose ANOTHER goal, this time to offsides, heh heh. Canadiens challenge. And it’s waved off.
