Zubie#8
Take this with a grain of salt but I was watching Hockey Central @ Noon on SportsNet and two of the anchors both stated that their have been rumblings about Oates eventually taking the reigns from Lou when the time is right. It at least makes for good a discussion. Edited January 28, 2015 by Zubie#
Jerzey
I'm not against it. Whoever comes in after Lou is going to have some big shoes to fill and I'm sure Lou will stay on in an advisory roll. Who replaces Conte?
mfitz804
I'm not even sure Oates will be the next head coach.
Zubie#8
I'm not even sure Oates will be the next head coach.Coach and GM are totally different things. He wasn't a good head coach in Washington, maybe he can make a good GM, who knows.

Yes they are. But the odds of them firing him as coach and then hiring him as GM are pretty low, I would think...
MadDog2020
Yeah that's a little scary... I'd prefer someone with previous GM experience when the time comes... Or at least someone with a heavy personnel/scouting background. Edited January 28, 2015 by MadDog2020

mfitz804
He's an interim coach. Right. But if he doesn't get the job ultimately, will they honestly bring him back as a GM? I don't see it.

mfitz804
Maybe, I guess time will tell. I don't see them making that move for the next GM.
Devils Pride 26
Hmm I like the idea of the coaching split then, if this is true. Oates to GM, Stevens to coach. They would've spent time behind the bench together and have a common dynamic or relationship going.
NewarkDevil5
If you're Oates and you've been told that you might be succeeding as GM of this team and you're currently interim coach of a team that's 5th worst in the league with 2 generational talents up for draft this year, do you make subtle missteps to ensure a better chance at one of those guys while coaching? '7'
imho Lou will be the GM for the next 5 years at least so this is a worthless discussion

Zubie#8
imho Lou will be the GM for the next 5 years at least so this is a worthless discussionWe don't know if Lou will be facing pressure from the owners after this season or next. I don't see him still being here for the next five years.

ThreeCups
I wouldn't mind, it is hard to be worse than Lou has been for the past 5 or so years
coldply123
Zero chance Lou is here for another 5 years. One, I don't get the sense he plans on sticking around much longer. Two, if this team is going to stink the next couple years I don't think Lou would survive with the new owners anyway. The Oates thing is strange however. Is it confirmed they mentioned him as next GM and not HC? Because technically Lou is the HC right now.

ATLL765
He has made his mistakes, but I think he deserves at least 2-3 more years to complete the "rebuild". Oates as a GM is crazy. The guy couldn't even coach at the NHL level and I'm unaware of any other experience he has that would make him GM material.
2ELIAS6
i dont see lou going anywhere for the next couple of years atleast.. and by that time i doubt oates will even still be employed with this organization let alone be taking over the role of gm
coldply123
I think Lou will get a shot to stay through next season but another playoff miss next year and I believe very strongly the owners will demand Lou implement a transition or make their own move. Sure they will. If anything the owners seem to have a great deal of patience as long as you have a plan. Lou definitely has a plan.
