thefiestygoat
Don't want to self-promote but rather than type everything out again, here is a post I put up over at ILWT on the invitees. I apologize if I missed anything or rambled on, the list came out so late I was writing it in the middle of the night. Mike Morreale of NHL.com has a lot of tweets on the 1st day of action of camp. As usual Tom Gulitti's twitter and blog are great resources for info. Also the Devils YouTube channel is posting video and interviews. The interesting invitees at camp in my opinion are Jayden Hart, Matt Needham, and Roberts Lipsbergs.

Onddeck
Front page of nhl.com right now, interesting. Not sure why they think prospect forwards have a strong chance at making the team but at an interesting read http://www.nhl.com/ice/m_news.htm?id=726210&navid=M_DL|NHL|home

dmann422
Who's the early favorite to be the first D injury call up from Albany? Seniority would say helgeson or Burlon, no? Or do we think they'll go right to severson?
Devilsfan118
I gotta say, TG is doing a fantastic job so far with the camp. Lots of info, pics, blog entries, etc. Great stuff. ..especially since, you know, fans aren't allowed in

Or do we think they'll go right to severson? Burlon's not signed to a contract yet. Last year it was Helgeson. I think they are going to sign someone for Albany and that guy would be the first call up if a vet got hurt.

Or do we think they'll go right to severson? I suppose it depends on who he'd be replacing. But can anyone chime in on Hrabarenka's potential. Appears to have the physical tools, he's young, and put up pretty good point totals. Or is it all smoke and mirrors?

Appears to have the physical tools, he's young, and put up pretty good point totals. Or is it all smoke and mirrors? Lot of guys I'd like to see repeat last season, Hrabarenka is one of them. I don't think he's any higher than 12th on the depth chart right now. I do like that he has basically moved from a 3rd rate junior league in 2009-10 into being a decent pro in the space of 4 years, that's impressive, but I'm not sure he's an NHL player. I've seen him play a few times, never live though. yeah after I posted I looked it up and saw Burlon isn't signed. Are they cutting ties with him? I don't think so, but I don't think they think very highly of him, either. They qualified him, but that doesn't mean he'll get an NHL contract. Well you figure you can expect Salvador to pick up some bumps and bruises, so you'd preferably want someone who can play the pk. I'm not sure I think highly of Harrold filling that role.If severson impresses as much as he's being talked about he could be the guy much like Merrill was last year. Plus he's a righty which would allow Merrill to stay on the left side.
RizzMB30
I'd like to see Hrabarenka or Helgeson get some time. Why would the Devils sign another defenseman when they've been praising their own defensive depth for this entire off-season. We have an 7th defenseman who will jump in in case of injury, and that's Harrold. I understand the reasoning behind signing a depth defeseman that can bounce in between, but I don't see that happening. You're going to have a depth guy that is going to be repeatedly exposed to waivers if the Devils have a multitude of injuries. It's just much easier to move around a younger guy if the injury bug hits us hard.
Triumph
I think Severson's probably capable of playing in the NHL. I imagine Helgeson is a replacement-level D at best, which is not what you want to have around. I guess Harrold fulfills that function but it would be nice to have another guy around in case Severson falters (or in the near-inevitable case that Helgeson does) Severson cannot go back to Kelowna, he's AHL or NHL (or ECHL). devilsrule33
Use your skills Damon, you don't have to play a physical game because you are big... Severson on what advice Stevens has given him this week about his play: “I think he likes what he sees overall. He was a very physical player and a very competitive player when he played and that’s what he wants to see out of his players that he coaches. So, anytime you can be solid on the defensive end, then my mindset is get in the offensive end and create for your team as well. Obviously, as a defenseman, you’ve got to shut down the opposition and he’s a guy who really prides himself on being physical and making players on the other team not want to play against you. So, (it’s) just little things that I’ve learned from him and I hope to continue doing so.”- See more at: http://fireandice.northjersey.com/fire-ice-1.174987/devils-prospect-damon-severson-feels-it-s-time-to-start-my-nhl-career-1.1051700#sthash.GBPSdoyj.dpuf Edited July 15, 2014 by devilsrule33

Triumph
I mean, if Severson's already a physical player, I don't see the problem. I do see an issue with being physical at the blue line in general, I just don't think that's a strategy that can work in today's NHL. RizzMB30
He's teaching the kids how to play physically well. It already added another element to Larsson's game, making him a more complete player. You all are making it sound like it's a bad thing. This idea that in the 'new' NHL there is no place for physicality is complete bull. In no way is Stevens forcing these players to be physical. That's the most naive thing I've ever heard. Use your skills Damon, you don't have to play a physical game because you are big... That's true for every single defenseman. No where in there does it say, "Stevens told me to be more physical because I'm big." This is Severson saying he THINKS Stevens and the coaching staff think of him. Wouldn't you rather a defensemen to understand how to be physical in the right way than be a loose cannon.

Devilsfan118
Man the Devils have SO many quality prospects on defense. It's truly a great thing. (In no particular order) Larsson, Merril, Gelinas, Severson, Santini, Scarlett, Jacobs..even Burlon and Hrabarenka.. damn. Does make you think some of them have to be expendable though. I have to admit.. I was always adamantly against trading Larsson. But if he's still got that flashy appeal to other GMs..and if he could snag a quality offensive prospect.. I'm starting to think it might be a smart move.
