2014 Draft Thread

Oh good, an overage goon in the 6th round.  Jesus christ.  I knew they weren't going to come out of this draft with a ton of skill, but they've come out of it with just about none.

No speed either.  For a league that's entirely trended to speed since the lockout.

I mean, do Lou and Conte understand what is going on in the league?  TB is loaded with great prospects and thats because they take skill and speed over grit and FIGHTS.  Seriously, what the actual fvck are Lou and Conte thinking picking 2 goons and Chatham who will likely have to become one to make the NHL.  Do they not pay attention to trends? Have they not noticed that teams like LA and Chicago don't employ goons? I'm really starting to question management here, especially if they don't rid themselves of Sal or Volchenkov via compliance buyout and upgrade their top 6.  Just a disheartening past two days

Just seriously, take a chance on one player, just one for fvcks sake. At 161 we could have had Spencer Watson who put up 35 goals this year in the OHL, or Vladimir Tkachyov who shows a lot of offensive upside

Yeah I know its the 6th round, but the kid we took there sounds like a waste of a pick. I don't get it really... If there's a time to take a gamble, its the 6th round. Edited by MadDog2020

The devils are lauded for their scouting but that seems to be from picks a decade ago. This drafting strategy this year was simply awful.

Someone else said it but if they got the #1 pick, they'd pass in mcdavid and eichel for a toolsy defenseman.

I feel like there's some 80 year old French Canadian scout that gets his way every draft.

It's almost like they're shying completely away from speed/skill/overseas players because of the Swedes not working out.  Pretty much our entire last four drafts have been North American players and our entire draft this year was grit and size as opposed to speed and skill - which just happens to be winning in the league these days.

The Devils have drafted plenty of speed in recent drafts - Black and Johnson can fly.  So it's not like they are immune to the idea.  It's just a question of thinking that you have to draft a team - certainly goons and physical D are harder to come by these days, but that's because it's more difficult to play in the league, and those players have become less important.  I like Dudek and Quenneville and Jacobs, but the rest, yuck.  Chatham I think I'd like more as a 4th or 5th rounder.

I also suspect that the Devils are off Russian players in general, but of course there's no way to prove that.

Let's wait and see.  I think we are a fringe team as things stand right now.  If we do miss the playoffs again, I would be surprised if ownership doesn't push for some front office transitions and changes overall.

Today is one of those days that I wish we had a Toronto/Montreal-esque beat writer that would just get in Lou's face and ask him some really tough, and even unfair questions.  Like, why are you wasting draft picks on goons?  Do you feel that Salvador is a better defenseman than Fayne?  Do you have a plan to address the lack of scoring in any meaningful way?  Can you tell us unequivocally that you will not be signing Brian Gionta?

Devils could've taken Point over Chatham in the 3rd, Audette over Rehill in the 5th, Watson over Dudek in the 6th, and an overager who produces like Vail over Baddock in the 6th. Unreal.

Now this is something I agree with 100%.

It's impossible to forecast, but the feeling today is severe disappointment. Looking at the picks, it's hard to be excited about, or see much upside in any of them. We're going to need a big surprise or turn around from someone in this draft class, and that's not a given.

Our team has not been in this bad of shape roster, depth, and prospect wise in 25 years. Instead of taking steps forward we plop out a draft like this. I just don't see how these picks are solid building blocks for the future unless we think the future stanley cup winning teams will be a lineup of all 3rd and 4th liners.

If the Devils do end up with one of the top two picks next year, I think Harris will actually demand to see the vaunted draft list ahead of time.  If McDavid and Eichel are not one and two, security has to escort Conte and Lou out of the building, preferably in the same way that Victor Maitland does it.  If I'm Harris, I would also insist on announcing the pick myself just to be absolutely sure.

As for the French Canadian guy, maybe the new food vendor, who refuses to prepare french fries and mayo, is an attempt to encourage him to retire.

Without Harris getting us #30, here is what our draft would have looked like:

2 11 41 NJD JOSHUA JACOBS D USA 6' 1" 193 USHL INDIANA

3 11 71 NJD CONNOR CHATHAM RW USA 6' 2" 222 OHL PLYMOUTH

5 11 131 NJD RYAN REHILL D CAN 6' 2" 210 WHL KAMLOOPS

6 2 152 NJD JOEY DUDEK C USA 5' 11" 180 HIGH-NH KIMBALL UNION

6 11 161 NJD BRANDON BADDOCK LW CAN 6' 3" 205 WHL EDMONTON

EDIT: I apologize if this has caused you to lose your lunch.
