Brodeur Article, name dropping where he might want to play, reveals wh

Look, Brodeur clearly sees to some degree that he might not find a place in the NHL next year, because he said so in one of his many interviews.  And I think he sees the writing on the wall here - including the Winter Classic, he's started 9 of the last 24 games, Schneider has started 15.  That's a 51-31 split over an 82 game season, and that's the ratio he's looking at here going forward, at best.  So he wants to play and for a winner, but he recognizes, in his tortured language, that winning teams might not want such an old goalie.

I think 'going out on your own terms' is for fans.  I don't blame players who want to keep playing.  They train your whole life to do something, they're one of the best in the world at it, and most guys won't get to a high level in anything else they do.  For Brodeur to go out on his own terms - that ship sailed 2 years ago.  There's a few great athletes who've managed it - most do not.  But fans forget about those years.

It made sense that everyone involved wanted Marty to keep playing for the Devils beyond 2012.  For one, he'd just come off a terrific 50-game stretch of .920+ play.  For another, even if they had wanted to, it's not like the Devils had anywhere else to go...they had Hedberg, Frazee, and Kinkaid from within...sure, Lou could've brought someone else in, but as we all know, PR plays a HUGE part in all of this...no way in hell Lou was going to let Marty go to another team, especially when he had been playing well enough to help his team reach the SCF.  Lou and the Devils would've been shredded by just about EVERYONE if he had just let Marty walk...now, for many Devils fans (especially the ones who aren't pure Marty fanboys and have been truly watching this season and last), it can't happen soon enough (sad as that may be).

On one hand, sure, it probably would've made Marty even more legendary if he had called it quits on his own after the 2012 SCF, but it's impossible to blame anyone for thinking he still had something left after his extended run of very good play.

And yeah, the guys who get out at just the right time (John Elway, Patrick Roy, to name a couple) are clearly the exception.  But if you can get an absurd amount of terrific play and some championships for a couple of "meh" years at the very end, you take it every time, no questions asked.

re:  the bolded, I wonder to what degree.  I think logically he knows it (how can he not?), but I think it will still come as a major surprise to him if he basically announces "I'm done with the Devils...here I am, come get me!"...and all he hears are crickets.

I think he expects to get offers from bad teams, he just won't take them.

The real critical thing is that there don't seem to be many potential successors to the Brodeur throne.  Rask and Schneider got a super late start to their careers.  Luongo spent half his career on bad teams.  Lundqvist is excellent - the Rangers are going all-in-ish these next 2 years so we'll see if they manage a Cup.  The last two Calder winning goalies were Mason and Raycroft and teams have stopped drafting goalies in the top 10 of the NHL draft - there isn't a ready-made narrative for great goaltender anymore.

Gibson is very young and is starting his career with a very good team.

One other thing that people aren't thinking of so far as where Marty might play is with one of the expansion teams, especially if one of them is in Quebec.

John Gibson has played 2 NHL games.  Talk to me when he has played 200.

Wasn't something about Seattle being all but official released earlier this season?  Or am I completely off base here.

For the most part, everyone seems to think Seattle and to a lesser extent Quebec are done deals. If it's true, I'd expect the NHL to make an official announcement at least a year before the team touches the ice. For example, Columbus and Minnesota were officially announced June 25th, 1997 and didn't start until the 2000-01 season.

Here is another gem from brodeur today. He is basically blaming his poor performances on him not getting enough playing time in a row while saying that's the reason why Cory has done so well. Just leave already.

"I had my chance. I had some games. It's easy for him(DeBoer) to make switches but it's hard for a goalie to get on a roll when you don't play," Brodeur said. "You look at Cory and he's playing unbelievable right now. There's a reason. He's playing a lot."

Some of you guys are too much, it's not even worth discussing with people as delusional. I suggest some of you guys replace the crest on your jersey to a MB30 logo.

Man why does that sound so freaking familair.....

Broduer though about stopping these types of quotes, but it keeps squeaking through.

Oh Marty.

One more week guys, one more week tops of this bullsh!t.

Unless he runs his mouth all the way up to July 1st.  I'm hoping he becomes irrelevant once the Devils are done playing.

Why are we ignoring the part where he says he had his shot and he had some games? It looks like he's saying Corey capitalized and he (Marty) didn't.

He says that and then follows up with what I posted.  He keeps going where he first blames himself for a brief moment and then immediately follows it up with him blaming everyone else.  It's getting very irritating and he should just say something along the lines of "I didn't do that well and that is why I deserved the fewer starts."  Period.

Because he's making excuses.  Schneider didn't play well because he was playing a lot.  We can go through the schedule and find times when Schneider had sat out, got in a game, and immediately did well.  I'll give you a hint, it's way more often than Brodeur did that.

To piggyback onto this...it's the way he sometimes puts things that has me wishing that he'd just shut up.  That last little blurb basically came off as "Well, yeah, I did have my chance, and Cory IS playing well, but it's because he's getting lots of playing time now, and if I got that playing time..."

So one more time:

SHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUP!

for the love of God...

I think people's frustration with Marty are leading them to assign a level of malevolence to everything he says. It doesn't matter what he says, it will be picked apart for negative quotes regardless.

For example, no one seems interested in the quote where he says the devils are in outstanding hands with Schneider next season.

But then again he follows it up with that statement I wrote.  He is speaking out of both sides of his mouth.  He is pulling an MB.

Now I think MB on here is really Martin Brodeur.

Seeing the Devils not make the playoffs for a second straight season is hard on people too, and that is going to manifest itself in many ways.

But Marty just seems to think he's entitled to play regardless of how good he is.  The other guy was better than him.  A lot better.  One guy was 18th in save%, the other one is 43rd.  What does Marty think...that PDB screwed him somehow?  That the coach shouldn't try to go with the guy who's playing better?  The ironic thing is, Marty seems to think he somehow should've gotten MORE playing time when he got way more than he ever really deserved.  He says it was hard for him, and I'm sure it was simply because of what he once was and no longer is (or ever will be again).  I can only imagine what it must have been like for Cory, who to his credit says all of the right things, but had to watch a guy get legacy starts at his expense, when he fully knows deep down inside he gives his team the better chance to win games.

At this point, Marty is a falling star trying to say anything to save face, whether it's for his own mental self preservation or for someone dumb enough to sign him this summer. I don't agree with what he says, but I also think he's not in his right mind when he's saying it. He's reeling because this wasn't how it was supposed to end. He was supposed to retire the triumphant hero, and now he's facing the reality of fading away.

If I can use one of SterioDesign's relationship analogies, it's like someone getting dumped who wasn't expecting it. They say a lot of things out of fear and jealousy. In Marty's mind, he would be just as good as he was if only he got another chance, and he doesn't realize Deboer gave him way more chances than he deserved this season. For some reason, he still thinks there's a couple of drops in the tank. These last 2 years sucked. I think he will be forgiven once some time has gone by, similar to the Niedermayer situation.
