Mitico12
We are 0-8 in shootout attempts this year thus far...that's pretty pathetic and troubling, especially if we expect those extra points to boost our playoff chances. Can't we change the formula? Perhaps have someone like Harrold or even Gionta shoot instead of the typical failures? What do you think... PacificDevil
Elias should be first, then Brunner, then Henrique?
eaglejelly
On all goals against in the shootout the opponent lifted the puck. The Devils should try that.
2ELIAS6
I think theres no real shootout capable talent on the team which is why its so damn bad. Everyone is just down right horrible when it comes to the shootout its a guaranteed loss
newarkdev01
Shootouts are a weird animal and I think our best group would be Elias, Henrique and Teneby (who we never see on the ice again). Brunner looks ok but I like the idea of having Elias start then maybe Brunner next or vice versus and then Henrique who seems to have pretty strong lateral moves. '7'
I would get Clowe off the shootout. I don't know if he's had success in the past when he was younger. But he's big and lumbering and is not fooling anybody
Devilsfan118
It's funny/sad to watch this team go from one of the best in the shootouts to one of the worst in just a few short seasons. I posted this in the GDT, but I'll repeat it here. This team went from.. 1. Kovalchuk 2. Parise 3. Elias/Clarkson/Zajac to 1. Brunner 2. Clowe 3. Elias/Zajac I'd say that's an A to a C+, maybe. And Brodeur's gotten worse as well. Can't expect to win many skill contests without offensively skilled forwards. Is Clowe good in the shootout or something? Am I missing somthing - why is he shooting over Henrique and Zajac, and before Elias?
TheRedStorm
Elias can not be in the shootout anymore until he finds another move. The wide right and swoop in is as predictable as the stop that's coming. I remember being at a few games where he skated straight in picked a spot and scored. I was at the game at MSG where he beat Henrik glove side and won it.
peteyvegas51
I'd remove Patty from that group. He's been using that same move for 20 years. The goalies don't even strain putting that left pad down to stop it. Face it, they have no moves at all

DJ Eco
1. Brunner 2. Loktionov 3. Zidlicky or Ryder I know you may think I'm crazy but Zidlicky's got a nice wrister.
thelastonealive
Look, I dislike shootouts as much as the next guy, but I refuse to sit through a sh!tout.
SterioDesign
what i'd say is that we don't know how those guys look in practice. Clowe could be 10/10 in practice for all we know. The coaches knows. We got pretty lucky having Kovalchuk who was almost a sure shot goal (and we lost everytime he missed) and we had Zach who was really really really good too (of course most people here focus on the few missed in a row he got later in on season to convinced themselves that he was sh!t since he left) but fact is we have guys who "can" get the job done they are just not doing it. Even Henrique on his penalty shot couldnt get it, so thats 0/
ATLL765
I'd like to see Ryder, Henrique or Zajac to be given a shot over Clowe. Ryder especially.
PWW
Ryder has had lots of chances in his career and is NOT good in the shootout for whatever reason.
The 29th Pick
I wouldnt use Clowe, BUT he has like an over 40% success rate....which is way beyond anyone else on the team....but he looks weak so far. here's who I would use: Kovi Kozlov Zach Gionta (Brian that is) oh shoot...they're all gone nevermind Make them win it in OT someway...somehow
ATLL765
Can't we get rid of the shootout. I don't think anything pisses me off more than watching a shootout. I'd rather they just make the two captains of the team play that year's NHL game to see who wins.

But he's big and lumbering and is not fooling anybody He's like 38% which is very good actually.

Even Henrique on his penalty shot couldnt get it, so thats 0/9 Parise is a 46% career guy and Kovy is a 39% career guy. Elias and Clowe are both 37% guys. So just comparing those 4 guys, it's not like the Devils had slam dunk goal getters before and the 1 less goal every 20 attempts is the reason things are bad. We, as Devils fans, are probably just sensitive to this because the Devils were on the good luck side of the shootout in the early years and now we're on the bad luck end of it. NJDevs4978
Clowe, Elias and Zajac percentagewise are really the best they have. Plus Brunner who's like 2-9 including 0-2 this year, not a huge size sample though. There's nothing they can do short of dragging Viktor Kozlov across the pond or get him from whatever the heck he's doing now and having him be a designated specialist. They better at least be practicing the shootout this year though, I know Pete was loath to do it the last couple years but there's not much choice now. Triumph
Is there any evidence that practicing the shootout makes teams better at it? I would imagine no. Seems like a classic coach move to practice it unnecessarily.

Seems like a classic coach move to practice it unnecessarily. Would give you an idea of some guys that may be better at it than others. Not something I would be doing every week, though. Seems like something you can do in camp as a "fun" exercise. Or gas the players that miss. Either way.

I'm sure they do breakaway drills and penalty shot simulations ...which are almost the same as a shootout attempt and I bet some players do it on their own before or after practices
