Triumph
He's not playing on the 4th line, so this is a non-story. I'm curious what questions Chere asked to get to this point.
'7'
Elias, even at this stage in his career, is not a 4th line player. I understand his frustration. He's turning 39, the team is crap offensively around him...another year of no playoffs. How about we just keep Patty happy. I don't want this to end up like the bungled John MacLean situation in 1998 where Elias asks to be traded.

Mitico12
He's not a first or second line player on a legitimate contender team either, so let's not dissillusion ourselves Patty. Now, whether he is comparing himself to our current slew of first and second liners, sure, he may have a point. But, Elias doesn't play on the 1st or 2nd line on a team like Anaheim, Chicago, or the Rangers. His pride is hurt, and I can understand that. He feels he is better than most of the cast of characters we have on this squad and hence his gripe. I don't blame him. But, truthfully, he hasn't played exactly "lights out" this season either... Also, I think this smells of "sour grapes" in the locker room as Elias isn't exactly an "outspoken type" to take his gripes to the media. There may be some malcontent in the room with the jettisoning of Jagr, Zidlicky, and soon Havlat. Elias is seeing his "Czech Mate" group being dismantled, and he may not like that too much... Colorado Rockies 1976
He's not playing on the 4th line, so this is a non-story. I'm curious what questions Chere asked to get to this point. What if Lamoriello, or the Devils' next official head coach, asks him to play on the fourth line next season? The bolded is from within the article. Basically Chere spitballing an idea to Elias and Elias saying he doesn't want to, though yeah, I'd love to hear the series of questions Chere asked and how they were phrased. It's also kind of funny seeing the comments and Chere trying to interact with fans...Chico was light-years and then some ahead of Chere in this regard. devilsrule33
I know Chere is an idiot, and he is getting clicks, but no doubt Elias is not happy with his current deployment. He was most likely able to use his current frustration to get Patty to say some more. I said it two games a go, Patty has to go in the off-season. The Devils will get something back, and Elias can play for a better team in a better situation. I don't see Elias signing up for third line time next season with the current roster. It's insulting. Mike Brown
He's not a first or second line player on a legitimate contender team either, so let's not elude ourselves Patty This is simply not true. One of the biggest fallacies in hockey is when people say such and such person is not a top 6 player on a good team. Reason being is because it's not that black and white. Chimaira_Devil_#9
You always get an honest answer from Patty. I think he is one of the few players you can just ask and he will give you an honest answer. I don't think Chere had to twist his words to much on this one. For once anyway. Everyone thought the same thing when Arnott and Sykora were traded, and those were more controversial than the current departures. If he's unhappy it's because he's had a poor year on a declining team, not because of trading two guys that weren't coming back anyway. mfitz804
I wonder if he also asked if he'd play goalie, or if he'd drive the Zamboni. He won't be doing either of those either.

I don't know, I think he's playing with arguably the least talented linemates. Maybe Ruutu can argue Jo and Harrold is worse but I think Zubrus and Gio are the worst because of Zubrus. So maybe not the 4th line but he is getting the least talented help.
peteyvegas51
He doesn't deserve to be on the 5th line, the way he's played this year. Hell, even last year.
Mike Brown
I'm not against trading Elias. He's one of those guys who deserves ones last shot at a cup. I've actually been advocating it since November.
sundstrom
does elias really think he's playing on the 4th line? ruutu-josefson-harrold - that's the 4th line. this is stupid. Elias had the second most minutes of any forward last night. He consistently has more minutes than all but Zajac and Cammelleri. now, is he playing with 4th line players? you bet. but the devils have 7 of them so unless he's the winger for zajac and cammelleri, he's going to be playing with "4th liners". I think when you play with the likes of Dainius Zubrus and Stephen Gionta, it feels like your role has significantly been reduced. Zubrus has 0 goals in his last 50 games. 14 shots in his last 33 games. Gionta is Gionta. In my opinion Josefson is better than Gionta. I hope everyone thinks that Ruutu is better than Zubrus. Elias is getting 1st PP time and PK, but the 5-on-5 idea is kind of sh!tty. It's like when he used to play with Madden and Pandolfo from time to time, but worse. Bingo. They have to balance the lines out a little, and he drew the short straw. It's not his fault that 1/2 this roster is comprised of AHL level talent. That being said, his outlet pass to Gio on the goal was very nice.

But the prior game he made a horrible, blind, backhanded pass directly to Dubinsky for a goal. He's been great at times and at times he has looked like a 4th liner. Personally, I would have him on the 3rd, or in the Devils case, on the 2nd because we don't have a lot of second line guys, other than the guys on our first line

I actually thought his pass was fvcking brilliant, however, it kind of canceled out because he was a little to blame on the goal before from PHI which was shorthanded. He and Gelinas both were standing around and had a half-assed effort at picking up a man or the puck, and there was no reason for them to score that on our PP. Well, Triumph and CR are right, Chere asked him a line of questioning and then applied the answer in a way that made it seem like Elias was addressing his current situation. Honestly, this should have gone in the Chere thread so no one gets confused. That said, I have to think Patty is frustrated playing out one of the last years of his career on a line with Zubrus and Stephen fvcking Gionta. This is the type of situation that ends a player's career early and it pisses me the fvck off. This is the point where Elias needs and deserves to be playing with talent at least at his level. There is no excuse. Patty should request a trade out of here if he knows what's best for him. Edited March 9, 2015 by Neb00rs
