whaaaaat?! what happened?? is it serious, i don't see anything yet

o boy. obviously hoping its not too serious.

did it looked like he was able to skate on his own?

TG said he thinks he'll be okay, that poor guy. Crazy how badluck is often striking the same guys all the time

per TG:

Fedotenko said he talked to Merrill in locker room afterward and he seemed to be doing better and be OK, "but I'm not a doctor."

We're pretty much on the same page.  My only real point is I think Marty had some pretty definite ideas of what he wanted, and he probably thought he was going to get it (decent playing time (20-30 games) with a playoff contender).  Now that he's still on the outside looking in and that doesn't look like it will change (I'm sure several teams with rather take a chance with their backups or someone on their AHL squad over Marty if their #1 guy suffers a long-term injury), is he cool with possibly playing no more than half of an NHL season, if that much?  I won't pretend to know what goes on inside his head...maybe having to wait until the ASB doesn't bother him at all.  But he always struck me as a guy who loves the game of hockey and loves to play.  It's gotta be weird for him to have no one to play for right now.

He mentioned this as a possibility way back in March when he was speculating about where he was going to play next year in the middle of the Devils' playoff chase.  Honestly, I think his ideal is not being a backup - his ideal is parachuting in and being a starter on a team whose starter gets hurt.  My guess is that even though there were teams were interested in him, he wanted a guaranteed number of games and they said 'that's insane, we will look elsewhere'.  As for not playing, I'm sure it sucks, but he's been through 3 lockouts and didn't play anywhere else during any of them, so he's not like a Jagr type who just has to play at all costs.

He did play some during the 2004-05 lockout...some team of NHLers that played in Europe...I forget the specifics (Hasek was the other goalie).  But yeah, wasn't like playing in the KHL or anything.

Yeah, I can see him parachuting in for a team that lost its starting goalie and is hoping for a miracle, getting about seven or eight games, then the team realizing that Marty isn't Marty anymore.

What sucks with losing Fayne is if, Greene or Merril go down, we are really thin with defensive defenseman. Really need Gelinas and Larsson to step up this year.

What really sucks about losing Fayne is that he was the perfect replacement in the right age for Salvador but there was simply no room since we're still stuck with Sal. Santini mayyyyy be a solution but it's gonna take awhile for him to be established in the NHL. Fayne was really the perfect fit. Such a shame Sal got that contract after our run.

Totally fine with losing Fayne - they should've signed him to a 4 year deal coming off his RFA contract, but they gave him basically 3.5M for 4 years of solid defense, and now he makes that for one season.  Now I'll be less fine with that when they go out and find some sh!tbird defenseman to do what Salvador does and fall over themselves to praise him (not realizing that they got hardly anything out of Matvichuk, bought out White, bought out Volchenkov, let Vishnevski go, and sent McGillis to the oubliette - not to mention how bad Salvador has been), but yeah.  I'll also be less fine if Severson isn't ready for the NHL at all this year.

New Jersey has to make a trade before season start, especially if a guy like Boucher pushes his way on the team which I believe he is capable of doing. I just don't see Ruutu and Brunner both playing on 4th line. I suppose waivers is an option too. I would like to see NJ sign Komisarek and Kaberle/Mamashev as depth.

So many questions and I like depth signings. You can never have enough of it. The only question is where/when do we have too many guys. But we are a little bit older, so there's got to be a sense of injuries could start to pile up.

We also don't want to go into a mess like in 2011 when we started the season with too many guys and the whole team knew someone was gonna get traded to make room for Elias coming back. The team described the situation like a dark cloud floating over their head in the locker room not knowing who was gonna leave and ti played on their moral (again that's what players said). Lou admitted that he fvcked up that time and shouldnt have let that situation happen. In the end its a business and players have to deal with that kind of stuff all the time thought but It got really ugly having to play a man down in a game and not dress a forward. Total mess, ridiculous. Ultimately Langenbrunner got traded. Or in the last few years a few vets got signed but never really played, they were out of the lineup pretty much all the time.

So yeah... hopefully it's not gonna be the case again

Think Bernier will be replaced this season with either a rookie winger or Tootoo on the fourth line. Surprised at how little discussion has been on Matteau thus far both in the media and on various Devils forums. Would like to see him making a strong case to be the teams fourth line center in preseason along with Boucher having a strong camp. Really curious to see Mamashev play in a preseason game at this point.

Pre-season is a small sample size, but with so many built in biases by the coaching staff to vets and gritty players, really hoping to see big camps/games from guys like Brunner, Josefson and Sislo.

There is so much forward depth, that it is driving me nuts that the staff and Lou are looking to dump an offensive player or two to fit in Carter or maybe even a Tootoo. The team needs to keep anyone that can score goals. Ryder and Brunner are players that can infuriate coaches and fans, absolutely...but, you have Clowe and Havlat that will never stay healthy. Even if Havlat does, he might not be good at all. You are relying so much on two guys that have a combined age of 80 to stay healthy and lead your team offensively. Not the best idea.

Then you have the 4th line, and for all intents and purposes, it looks like the Devils will try and keep that group intact. Why should we think otherwise? It's unfortunate because a 4th line can be improved in so many ways. Zubrus-Josefson-Sislo, Zubrus-Josefson-Brunner. I know it is silly because Gionta is locked in as a regular, but the Devils goal this off-season should have not just been about improving the top 6, it should have been/be about improving 9-12 as well. I liked Ryan Carter. There can be a role for a guy like him in the 4th line, but they signed Gio, they signed Bernier. Unless one of them goes, there can't be a spot for him.

Sure it is early, but when I see so many forwards and have enough info about Pete and Lou, it's getting me nervous already.
