  7. Nice contract for both. For Devils, they keep a home-grown talent who is more than capable of playing a ton of time and a solid D. For Martin, the structuring shows that the Devils believe that he will improve each year ... so his salary goes up. And gives him a nice paycheck in the last year and a nice number to go into UFA with or sign a longer term deal with. Length is nice. If Martin turns into a solid #1 D in three years, the Devils work to extend his contract. If he's a bust, you either trade him in the final year or let him walk. Interesting to see a lot of discussion as to whether this is a risk or whether it was too much. Let me add this to the mix: Lou might have been rewarding Martin for his loyalty --- coming to camp last year with no contract as Lou worked out his cap problems; choosing not to go to arbitration after a $2M offer sheet. There is no way to know if Martin will continue to improve ... but from Martin's comments in the media about Sutter and accountability as well as his comments about Robinson, it sounds like A. he knows he needs to improve and B. he is planning on working to improve and expects to be held accountable for his play. Admitting that, for me, is half the battle and worth the risk. As for the removal of his name from the roster, it could be something that occurs when a contract is going through the NHL office or the web masters are idiots or ....
  8. There's too much unknowns on all these teams Are the Devils a remodel of the 1995 squad ... lots of role players and guys willing to play the system? Can the Rangers fit all those egos on the ice and gel as a team? Does Pittsburgh have a defense and goalie that can match the offensive firepower? Is Briere and Biron the saving grace for Philly? Right now, for me, it's a three-tier division Pens/Devils I think the Pens are the team to fear in the future ... right now they are a year or two away from dominance, but they have the personnel to prove me wrong Devils are going to surprise a few people. They are always written off, but I think the sum of their parts is going to be a solid team. I think a new respected coach gives them a bit of an edge because I think we are going to see accountability plus the Devils are always a team that can absorb loss of personnel (sans Captain Scotty, of course) Rangers/Philly Rangers look great on paper ... the questions are matters of chemistry and egos. Also I think Sather is going for broke this year, which has added the now or never pressure. For players like Shanny and Jagr, that works. If there are injuries or something happens to Lundy, I can the Rangers missing the playoffs and the Flyers sneaking in. But right now I would put the Rangers third in the division. But ... Philly added some key pieces and I think they will be way better than expected. And could easily finish third in the division. A lot of the Bobby Clarke mistakes are gone, but I think they still need a few more pieces before they move up. Islanders And this could all change once the teams get on the ice for camp
  9. I'm going to have to go with Briere as the worst. He's being paid for one really good year. He's fragile. He's small. Doesn't matter he's friends with Biron, it's how he's going to work with Gagne that will tell the tale. What makes his contract, to me at least, one of the worst is the number of years Philly gave him and the no movement clause. Regretably I think he's going to end up being as reviled in Philly as Lindros. Now about Gomez, time will tell if this was a good deal for the Rangers or not. He was only worth $5 million. So any team -- even the Devils -- would have overpaid if they paid out the $7M. The one thing that works in the Rangers' favor is that Gomez didn't ask for or didn't get a NMC. I think the biggest worry isn't his goals or assists, it's whether Gomez has chemistry with Jagr. If not, then he's an overpaid second-line center. Or he's a high-paid first-line center who is responsible for Jagr's off-year. Yes, I think the media and fans will put this kind of responsibility square on Gomez's shoulders. Why, because as Sue has stated New Jersey has been set up as the worst thing that ever happened to Gomez. IMHO, Gomez isn't a case of less in New Jersey is more in New York, instead it's what you see is what you get. Am I optimistic about Gomez's play with Jagr? Heck, no. I keep remembering how excited I was when we re-signed Mogilny. Ok, Jagr is not Mogilny. But the reason I was excited was because I rememer the chemistry Mogilny-Gomez had in 2000 and I was expecting some of that magic. Plus it would get Gomez away from Elias. What did I see? Bad hip and other stuff aside, I got Mogilny yammering at Gomez after a bad pass. Gomez ignoring Mogilny as Mogilny tapped his stick on the ice. NO chemistry. Heck, it appeared they didn't want to be on the same team, let alone the same line. Hopefully, for the Ranger fans, this type of history isn't repeated with Jagr and Gomez.
  10. The number from that list that I find the most interesting is that Marty is the oldest guy on the team. Then Matvichuk and Madden. Wow.
  11. Back to Sutter I think this is a great choice for the Devils. From all I've learned or heard about him, at the very least, he's going to bring acountability back to the Devils. That's a big step in the right direction for the Devils. Take a look at Sutter's success with young players and look at what Lou has picked up in the off-season. He bypassed Souray in favor of Vishnevski. He let Gomez walk and went with Zubrus, a guy who will go into corners and bang it out. Lou went with size and with what some have called works-in-progress. Lou picked up a few bigger, hungrier guys that will be taught Sutter's system. Guys that want that Cup because they haven't touched it yet. This is looking better and better. About Johnny Mac. I've loved him since he put on #15, but as some have pointed out Bobby Carpenter was the heir apparent to a head coaching job in Jersey till he took the leave of absence to take care of his dad. That's when Johnny Mac got his chance. Remember the rumor that there was going to be some big trade/deal that would shake up the Devils organization. And posters all thought it was Elias/Gionta/White trade stuff. What if the big shake-up is the coaching staff? Sutter comes in; Johnny Mac goes to Lowelll etc. That would shake this organization up. And possibly shake up the players. The Devils are a playoff team; but they should be a contender. There's just been that something missing the last few years. Maybe Sutter can figure out what it is and fix it.
  12. IMHO, the determining factor was the captaincy for his off-year. He took that job extremely seriously -- in the locker room and on the ice. On the ice, he tried to do way too much to prove he was deserving and capable. He put way too much pressure on himself to carry his line and carry his team. I agree he passed way too much. But then that was a common failing for the Devils last season. Like others have said, he also was still having his blood count levels monitored. I think this season, he's going to return to form. Gomez is gone. Elias will relax and go back to playing his game. Am really looking forward to see if he and Zubrus click. It could be interesting. And considering the freaking contracts they're handing out in the new NHL, he's a bargain for what he does.
