RangerBill
I like the idea of letting goalies be fair game in theory, the only problem is the equipment isn't designed to absorb hits. And yea catching gloves are ridiculous.Where were you a pro shop manager? I work at one now. I worked for C&L Sports when it was in E. Hanover and Monsey, N.Y. (at Sport-o-rama) I put on a goalie chest and arm and the sales rep hit it with a baseball bat, not full force but a good blow. I didn't feel a thing. These things are designed to absorb slapshots over 100 mph. I say let them be fair game, outside of the crease. Goalies that aren't big or not excellent skaters will stay between the pipes and the more courageous will stray from time to time.
bg.
Teams have too much invested in goalies, both in terms of $$$$ as well as their success - they need to be protected.

Yea they are designed for that type of impact, that's different from being wiped out by a guy barreling into you. The big bulky leg pads I think might cause some awkward falls and result in a lot of knee problems if goalies were getting bodychecked. Also there is usually not much protection in the back of the chest protector.

DaneykoIsGod
The whole theory of making goalies fair game outside of the crease opens the league up to three ugly words: Intent To Injure. Everyone knows that making them fair game opens a whole Pandora's box of guys like Tucker or Avery taking unwarranted runs at goalies. That's actually the idea behind it. That goalies would think twice before leaving the crease for fear of getting hurt. And goalies WILL get hurt. Moreso than they already do. Anyone who thinks the level of contact that goalies already have to endure outside the crease isn't enough is just hoping for injuries. This idea and the logic behind it is so bush league that it makes my brain hurt. Again, this concept is ONLY proposed by those who don't follow teams with puck-handling goalies. Just like the trapezoid.

Random Poster
Assume I'm a non-playing genius all you want, because you're wrong. I won't assume that you don't play the game (but if you play "deck" hockey, please...deck hockey is a joke) because that's just asinine. Tell you what, if you think DEK hockey not "deck" is a joke. Come on and join the league i play in in Morristown NJ on thursday nights. Running a full sized court, 4 on 4, 2 subs, 45 min game. So come on down and give it a shot, let's see if you last. I don't mean to bash dek hockey, but I strongly suggest to any dek hockey players that they learn to skate and play roller or ice. Hockey is just so much more fun when you are on skates. Learning to skate can be a pain in the ass, but it is definitely worth the effort in my opinion. Edited July 23, 2008 by devilsfan26

Or do the roller and ice teams you're on have more players? I think if you can, it is always best to keep playing your regular sport in the offseason, especially if it is roller/ice hockey since the motion of skating is different than running so you're using different muscles. I think if you can, it is always best to keep playing your regular sport in the offseason, especially if it is roller/ice hockey since the motion of skating is different than running so you're using different muscles. Because, quite frankly, the level of behavior and immaturity in summer roller leagues due to the population of young college kids that infest the roller leagues is a disgrace. In the fall and winter the roller league and ice league i'm in is outstanding in the Morristown area as the older players return. As a matter of fact, there are roller teams in my fall/winter league that i feel are better then the pro team we share the building with. I'm married, work a professional job, own a home and in my early 30's so traveling to play is out of the question like it was in my 20's, single and carefree. If i'm going to spend the cash, time to play and bitching from the wife, it sure as hell isn't going to be the Summer seasons where the college kids overrun it with no respect for anyone or anything. I enjoy dek, it's fun, great conditioning and a challenging brand of hockey to play as it just isn't "run to the ball" and "run around like crazy". Just becuase there's no skates, doesn't take away any strategy and system play. Players are mostly equal with no skates as the skating ability is taken away. A ball is used which is a bitch to handle on a sport court as it travels pretty fast and it spins when it comes off the boards, plus with composite sticks and the patterns on blades shooting accurate can be a challenge in itself. People that bash it are normally the ones who wouldn't last a full season due to the physical drain it does take and the challenge it can provide. There are players in my league that are outstanding stick handlers and goal scorers so to say there are is no talent is far off and a lack of disrespect to playersa that have ability and work hard. Also, my dek team that played in Wallington a few years ago, actually beat the "top" roller team there in a challenge game. The team we beat were no slouches. As a matter of fact, that team we beat had two players go on to play in the PIHA. P.S. No disrespect to all young college age players that play. Problem is a majority of your peers give the good ones a bad name.

Problem is a majority of your peers give the good ones a bad name. I never said anything about lack of talent or strategy regarding dek hockey. I just assumed since you played dek it was because you didn't skate, and was stating my opinion that roller and ice are just more fun. I have respect for dek hockey players, I just feel that those who only play dek are missing out. Sorry for making that incorrect assumption. That sucks about the college kids being a$$holes, where I play it's quite the opposite. The old angry guys are the ones throwing punches, running goalies, starting fights, etc. Maybe my team just has more sportsmanship, I don't know many other college guys playing in my league other than my team. Back to dek hockey, I used to play goalie in a dek hockey league so I understand there is strategy etc. I hated using the ball, I think it took a lot away from the game. Shooting accurately is practically impossible because it is too light, so it curves and dips as it heads toward the net. From the goalie's perspective, it makes it that much harder. I have no idea how many goals I gave up because it was going high glove and ended up going in under my blocker. I think that took away from the game because it took away from the talent involved in scoring goals.

I played goal for a team in Morristown's dek league last season and it was a ton of fun...those shots are damn frusturating though. One shot came from the blueline and I swear it dipped like a splitter through my five hole. Grrrrr...
