Onddeck Posted July 24, 2014 Share Posted July 24, 2014 I am sure most of you know the increase role analytics have taken in the NHL. I see posters on here throw at all different kinds of statistics. On NHL right now, theres an article on analytics in hockey and how Coach Babcock favors these advanced stats. http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=727093&navid=DL|NHL|home Interesting that NJ was one of the teams mentioned in the article as being one of the teams that have hired/promoted executives with statistical background. Toronto has already installed them, and the Devils are talking about doing it. It seems to me that shooting is something that virtually all GMs for a long time have looked at, and it didn't take fancy stats to tell you that sometimes a particular forward is very, very good despite not putting up amazing point totals, see Bergeron, Patrice. I think analytics will more likely result in teams moving away from the snot defensemen like Salvador and other intangibles, but ultimately it probably wouldn't take a whole department of statisticians to figure that out. Like Marshall said, it's called sportsvu. It will track every player on the ice and give us a better picture of where shots are coming from, where the best areas to shoot from are and I imagine it'll help track zone exits & entries with ease compared to going back and checking the video. Looks like they use them in the NBA.
