Gelinas back to AHL, Sislo called up

Merrill has not been better defensively, or at least not by much. Like I said, I need proof Merrill has been SIGNIFICANTLY better. Not just better, but he needs to blow Gelinas away defensively for this move to not hurt the team.

I agree that we shouldn't use Gelinas as a PP specialist. That's why he should get the 15-20 minutes of ice he was getting.

lol were arguing about the same thing in 2 threads so I'll stick to this one now- I won't argue the merits of Merrill sv gelinas since I don't think Merrill has gotten a good look yet, but IMO he passes the eye test for better defense.

As far as stats for why sal over gelinas, for one gelinas has gotten much more favorable zone starts- 62% to sal's 52%.also Salvador is playing against much more difficult competition- Pete is giving gelinas cupcake shifts compared to Salvador but gelinas still can't compete. Meanwhile Salvador actually is 3rd in the team when in Corsi when you adjust for quality of competition.

Like I said, we can agree to disagree. I'm not knocking gelinas but I don't think losing him in the pp is going to hurt as much as you think. We'll see though and maybe in wrong.

I do wonder how that must feel for Josefson and Loktionov to be the extra forwards and constantly get minor league call ups passing over you when injuries occur though.

Pretty terrible I'd assume. And it's not like their games have fallen off a cliff.

Josefson

2011/12: Goals For 73.7% Corsi 53.2% PDO 105

2012/13: Goals For 23.5% Corsi 50.7% PDO 90

2013/14: Goals For 54.5% Corsi 52.0% PDO 103

Loktionov

2011/12: Goals For 45.5% Corsi 53.2 PDO 98

2012/13: Goals For 50.0% Corsi 59.5(!) PDO 97

2013/14: Goals For 56.7% Corsi 57% PDO 100

I don't know if PDB thought Josefson was going to continue winning his matchups 7-3, but playing in front of goalies with saving 85% of the shots really killed him last year.

You say Merrill hasn't been given a good enough look, yet you say he's better?

There were a few times over the last few games where Gelinas pinched in or tried to stand up in the neutral zone only to get beat and gift the other team a 2 on 1. I think he did it twice in the Ranger game. He looked bad.

I can cherry pick some situations where Merrill got completely burned too.

yes, compared to gelinas Merrill has not gotten a good look. Gelinas has received much more favorable minutes plus Merrill has been used in the pk and barely on the pp. if Merrill got gelinas minutes and situations is like to see the results.

I really think gelinas is going to be back at some point. This was a combination of bad play recently plus he is still apparently just slightly eligible for the ahl during the break.

Gelinas was getting more minutes because he's been better than Merrill.

Send them all down. I'm going to see the baby Devils in AC on the 14th, I'm excited I'll be able to see gelinas, larsson and Boucher (among some of the guys who were gonna be down there anyway). Send Merrill down too, sh!t.

I'd rather see jo get some of these games. I honestly don't think he looked good at all recently, but I'd like to see him settle and get some games.

ok, we'll agree to disagree. There's a reason why one hasn't been sent down and one has. I agree gelinas' offense can help the team, but not at the cost of quality defense. As jersey devil said zidlicky already is prone to defensive gaffes, pairing him with gelinas is not a good idea. We need defensemen who can actually, you know, play defense.

In 3 years I have little doubt Merrill will be the far superior player. But we can bump this at that point and see.

Gelinas defense has been awful lately. There's no harm in sending him down for the Olympic break and letting him build some confidence. Merrill doesn't bring the offense like Gelinas, but he hasn't been as big a headache in his own zone. It's better to have Gelinas in the AHL playing then to have him getting 3 minutes here or scratched.

There's a reason why Merrill was getting benched and not Gelinas for a good stretch too.  There's another guy who was a defensive liability when he first came up through the system, but was kept on the team because he brought a dynamic to the Devils blueline no other defenseman brought.  You might have heard of him.  His name was Scott Niedermayer.

I agree that Merrill will be the better player in the end.  I think he'll be better than Larsson too.

Merrill hasn't been good defensively either.  There's a lot of harm in sending down a guy who fills a need.  That need is offense.  He's one of the best offensive defenseman in the league let alone on the Devils.

I assume this is for because of some rule for the olympic break, although hes been below average defensively, his shot is invaluable at the point on the PP. No one on this team has a bomb from the point like him. Hes been one of the best rookie pointmen in the league this year, thats not even debatable. Listen everyone knows the biggest problem for this team on d, and its not gelinas. Its the captain of the goddamn team. Larsson should be playing instead of him, plain and simple, give me greene, larsson, zidlicky, volch, fayne, and switch merril and gelinas depending on the matchup and thats the optimal lineup for me. Im fine switching fayne with merril on some nights too.

this would be great as long as we were always in the pp, because he is not good at even strength.

I was actually hoping Sislo would get a shot on the top two lines, I thought he looked really good on the 4th in his limited ice time. He brought much needed speed and took the puck to the net a lot. He would be great with Jagr setting him up. Would have been interesting to see him get that chance.
